– Komesu Sanshin Store has been in business for 18 years. it originally ran in a small workshop in Uehara, Ginowan City,
but we moved here about six years ago. We’re now based in Kitanakagusuku. While we offer traditional sanshin,

so it’s rare to see two identical patterns. – This is one of a kind!

It’s true that if you’re too attached to strict tradition, – young people might find it hard to get into…
– Maybe it’s a bit intimidating! – That’s true. – But starting out with a casual attitude, and then moving on
to a full-fledged traditional sanshin, you’re balancing both,
or reaching both sides, which is amazing. – Really. You were doing some incredibly detailed work, what prompted you to get involved
in repairing and making sanshin like this? Well, I was originally born in Tokyo,
but I came to Okinawa when I was about 10 years old. I wanted to do a job that was uniquely Okinawan,
especially since I was about 20 years old. That’s amazing! Coming from outside, especially since I came from France, I really feel the various charms and importance of Okinawa, and the desire to share them, protect them, and pass them on,
like in this program. It’s like falling in love with a place
that’s different from where you were born and raised. But when I imagine a sanshin craftsman, I imagine
an old man in an old workshop in the back of town, so I think it’s wonderful that young people are also doing it. I think it ‘s also inspiring for workers to take on these challenges. Yes, the sanshin itself is very appealing, of course,
as is the sound and performance. Making it requires intricate, precise handwork,
