Kagoshima Scenic Drive 4K to Japan’s Most Active Volcano | Tarumizu to Sakurajima & Kagoshima City
Mt. Sakurajima is one of the most active volcanoes in Japan.
It erupts between 200 and 1000 times every year.
The volcano is situated directly across Kagoshima Bay from central Kagoshima, a city with a population of approximately 580,000.
It was once an island before the lava from the 1914 eruption breached the strait that divided Sakurajima from the Okusu Peninsula.
That point is the intersection at 16:18 in the video.
This drive takes us from Tarumizu Port to Central Kagoshima through the road along Kagoshima Bay and Sakurajima.
We take the Sakurajima Ferry to cross Kagoshima Bay, which operates every 10-15 minutes, 24 hours a day.
This short ferry ride offers a stunning view of Mt. Sakurajima.
Unfortunately, the midnight ferry service (12:00 AM – 3:30 AM) will be discontinued from October 2025.
