Abashiri Prison Museum is by far one of the most interesting sights in Hokkaido. It was constructed in the 1890s to hold over 1,000 dangerous criminals; think of it as Japan’s Alcatraz.

Very few prisoners ever escaped or even tried to escape because of Hokkaido’s isolation and brutal winters. Where could they go with no food or clothing even though conditions inside the prison were not the best?

A modern prison still functions in Abashiri a few miles away but these are the original buildings.

  7. he escaped from 4 prisons and it made him look like he was a bad guy but in actuality, he was framed for his initial crime in Aomori and wanted to change japans jail system, not to mention the torture he suffered under the hands of officers of the law. in all of his escapes, he didn't kill or injure a single guard despite the torture he went through at the hands of them.

  9. Hi Sheila,
I really enjoyed your tour of this Japanese prison. I don't know how anyone ever managed to get out of it. The escapee must have been a very clever man!
