A town surrounded by untouched primeval forest. Spend some quiet time. A hot spring inn where you can encounter animals. Moritsubetsu, the Lamp Inn, nestled in a secluded area. Press the subtitle or CC button to enjoy full captions. Hello everyone, this is Watatabi. This time, I’m staying at one of Japan’s few “lamp inns.” Surrounded by nature, you’ll be able to observe a variety of animals up close during your stay. It’s located in Tsubetsu Town, Abashiri County, in eastern Hokkaido. I’m heading for Moritsubetsu, the Okukussharo Lake Hot Spring Lamp Inn, a lone inn nestled deep in the mountains. I’m looking forward to discovering its location and what kind of inn it is. I’ll make my way through the forest, immersed in Hokkaido’s natural beauty. I’ll stop at nearby tourist spots along the way. Turn left at this traffic light. Yes, turn left here. There are no customers. I’ve arrived. This is the Wakoto Onsen Open-Air Bath (free). This is the changing room . Right in front of the changing room is an open-air bath like this. Soaking in a hot spring surrounded by nature is truly amazing. Swimsuits are allowed, but shampoo and soap are prohibited in the open-air bath. It seems like there’s no gender distinction in the changing room. The temperature felt just right. So, let’s get in. It’s like a newborn baby. It feels great! ♡ About 41 degrees, I think. Just perfect. It’s a national holiday, but no one’s here. So, I have the open-air bath all to myself. It’s a bubbling hot spring. It smells like oil. It smells like the hot springs at Matsunoyama Onsen. The water is pretty clean. The farther we went, the dirtier it got. This side is relatively clean, with no dead leaves or anything. The bath is about chest-deep when sitting, about half-bathing, so it’s cold on the shoulders. But lying down would expose my genitals, so I sit in a triangle position for a half-bath. A fisherman came. It’s embarrassing. Lol … This might be tough for women. Swimsuits are allowed, but I think it’s still quite a challenge. Being completely naked makes it even more difficult to get in. There was a squirrel running around here earlier, and some large birds I didn’t recognize also came . It’s amazing being surrounded by nature. It’s a little embarrassing, but bathing in this open-air bath surrounded by nature is a luxury. I soaked in it for about 30 minutes. I don’t want people to come, so I’ll get out right away and change. I got out of the hot spring. My body is warm, almost hot. I’ve just dried off, and it feels so smooth and comfortable. It takes courage, but I recommend everyone to try it. The water itself is very clean, but if you soak around here, the sediment will fly up and it can be a little uncomfortable. If you do decide to go in, the best place is in front of this changing room. The temperature and water quality are perfect. There’s also a lake on the other side of the open-air bath. It’s really beautiful. It would be even more beautiful if it was sunny. Before I knew it, more and more customers were arriving. I’m glad I got in first. It was listed on the hot spring ingredients list, but it’s a simple hot spring (hypotonic, neutral, high temperature spring). Now, let’s head to our next destination. I visited this area on my last trip, so I’d like to try a more traditional tourist spot I haven’t been to yet. It’s 56km from here, about an hour away. My lodgings for the night are just around the corner, but I still have time, so I’ll go and check it out. Turning left here leads to a retro hot spring called Sanka Onsen, but day-use bathing doesn’t start until 10am, so I’ll give up for now. Turning left here leads to Kawayu Onsen. I wonder what happened to it? A Hoshino Resort was scheduled to open there early next year, but there seems to have been some trouble, so I wonder what’s going on there now? There was a crane! Was it in the picture? I’ve seen cranes a few times in Kushiro, but are they only seen in Hokkaido now? I ‘ve been driving through the Oita mountains. Apparently we’re about 10 minutes away . We’re almost there. The area suddenly opens up, and it’s become a tourist destination. We’ve arrived. This is a place called Ainu Kotan, and it seems you can take a sightseeing boat from nearby to a remote island, so I thought I’d stop here for lunch on the way there. There are many things related to the Ainu people. They serve Ainu food. There are many Ainu folk craft shops. I looked around a few shops, but couldn’t find anything I wanted, so I decided to wander around the area a bit more. This is an area lined with Ainu food and folk craft shops. There are many thatched-roof buildings lined up here. It seems you can see Ainu dances here. This looks like a theater. It looks like you can see ethnic dances like this. It’s called “Nusasan”…what is that? It says “Please do not enter, as this is a sacred altar for the Ainu people.” It seems to be a sacred place. This looks like a storehouse. Apparently, in Ainu, it’s called “Poo.” Apparently, toilets are called “Ikoro.” I wanted to have lunch, but I won’t make it in time for the boat, so I’ll do some sightseeing first and eat lunch when I get back. First, I head toward the parking lot. Which parking lot is it? We’ve arrived. I didn’t know there was free parking here, so I parked in the paid parking lot. This is the sightseeing boat dock. The boat fare is 2,400 yen per adult, and it includes the museum on the island. We’re heading to an island called “Churui Island. ” Our current location is a place called “Fortune Forest,” and from here, it takes about an hour and 35 minutes to circle the island. There’s nothing special on Chuurui Island, but there is this “Marimo Exhibition and Observation Center,” where you can see the process of marimo growing. That’s what I came here to see. This is the waiting room, but they sell a lot of marimo souvenirs inside. I’m a little hungry, so I’ll eat something before I go. Wow! These marimo are huge! It’s been a while since I’ve seen them. “Marimokkori” These are “imo dango” (sweet potato dumplings). They look delicious. Let’s eat. They’re super crunchy. Let’s eat . Hot! Delicious ! Chewy on the inside, crunchy on the outside. Eating sweet potato dumplings while looking out at Lake Akan is exceptional. I also ordered Zangi (fried chicken). The smell was insanely good. They were huge. Hot! Crispy, but also incredibly hot. Delicious! Freshly fried. There were still 15 minutes until departure. I could have gone to a restaurant as usual. Thank you for the meal. It was delicious. Today is a national holiday, so there were more customers. I wanted to go to the second floor, but it was too cold, so I stayed on the first floor. On the way to Churui Island, the ship’s announcements gave information about the sights to see. This is the museum. You can see the process of how marimo are formed. The life cycle of a marimo is as follows: (1) birth (spore formation and germination), (2) elongation (growth into filaments), (3) dense growth (aggregation of filaments), (4) rounding (formation of a sphere), (5) gathering (formation of a sphere colony), and (6) collapse (enlarging and hollowing out). Since we were limited to 15 minutes on the island, we weren’t able to take our time looking around. There was an indoor space on the second floor, so we went up there. It was warm here, too. I wonder if they had a stove on? It was warm. We came back. The trip back was quick. About 15 minutes, I think. I bought some marimo in the waiting room. After visiting the museum, I wanted some marimo, so I bought some. Apparently , this “marimo food” is necessary to grow marimo. They say one bottle will last about six months. If I run out, I’m sure they sell it online, so I’ll buy some there. I’m looking forward to watching the marimo grow. Let’s get started. It’s a 39km journey. My impression of the sightseeing boat ride I took earlier was that I spent most of the time on the boat. Even when we arrived at Churui Island, we only had 15 minutes, so it felt hectic and there were so many passengers that I couldn’t take my time looking around. The tour guided us through the boat’s announcements, but it was all in Japanese, so it might not be enjoyable for foreigners. I saw a roadside station, so I decided to stop by. I hope they have something to eat. It’s the remains of a station. I’ve come to a place called Aioi Roadside Station . I wonder if it’s the site of a former station? There are train tracks and a train here, and this station-like structure has been turned into a cafe. It’s interesting. The roadside station is over here, and I can smell the delicious charcoal fire. What is Kumayaki? Oh, there’s a huge line. What?! Everything is sold out. This is a very popular roadside station. I wanted to eat some hot soba noodles here, but unfortunately, everything was sold out. So I bought some Kumayaki. I’ll have that for lunch . I’m not an expert on trains, but there’s an old-looking train parked here. I wonder if it’s using an abandoned railway line? It looks like it was originally a station. Kitami Aioi Station. The one on the left seems to be called Nunokawa Station. It’s a cafe. There’s a train parked next to the cafe like this. The beef tendon curry and beef udon are all sold out. So, today I’m the unluckiest man in Japan. This is apparently the original Kumayaki, but this is the first time I’ve seen Kumayaki in the first place. It’s properly sealed. This is the standard Kumayaki. I’d like to try the original Kumayaki. Oh, it’s warm. It’s so cute. It’s like a taiyaki. It seems like soy milk is mixed into the dough as well. It’s very chewy. The dough is delicious. It’s taiyaki. Now, let’s head towards the inn. We’ll arrive in 10 more kilometers through the mountains that are visible in front of us. As we push through the forest, a building appears. We’ve almost arrived. We’ve arrived. This is the hot spring inn, Oku-Kussharo Lake Onsen Lamp no Yado Moritsubetsu. Unlike Aoni Onsen in Aomori Prefecture or Watari Onsen in Gifu Prefecture, where you spend the night by lamplight alone, it’s not the kind of place you’d expect to find out until you actually stay there, so today I’d like to experience what it’s like. First, I’d like to check in. The front desk is immediately to the left as you enter the entrance. Directly opposite the front desk is the lounge. Apparently, you can see a variety of animals in the hotel lobby, including Hokkaido martens, Hokkaido deer, Hokkaido chipmunks, Hokkaido raccoon dogs, and jays. My room is on the other side, past this large public bath. There are two buildings : the Seiryu-kan and the Shinrin-kan, and I’ll be staying in the Shinrin-kan. This is the lounge. My room is here, Room 251, and right next to it, amenities are provided, as shown here. They also have yukatas. Here’s a sample yukata, and the yukatas are also available here. Now, let’s go inside the room. To the right of the entrance is a closet, where bath towels and towels are kept. The yukata are outside, so I use the one I left outside. They also have bathing bags available . To the left of the entrance is the washroom. This is the toilet. There’s a hair dryer, but there’s no shower room. Beyond the closet is the room. It’s an 8-tatami Japanese-style room like this. It’s very clean and stylish in places. The futons are already laid out here. There’s also a sink here. This is the inn’s original coffee. Coffee is available. Beyond the tatami is a relaxing space like this. I’m really curious about what’s behind the shoji screen, and I’d like to see it. Oh, what a shame. lol, so disappointing. There was a parking lot right in front of me. Well, that can’t be helped. Maybe the view from Keiryukan is nicer. Or , maybe if I were on the third floor, I could see the view across the other side. The view outside was like this. The room looked like this. Here are the sweets I received with my kimono. I’m not sure what kind of bird it is, but these cookies have a bird design. Speaking of Lamp Inn, the cookies have lamp designs. They have a restaurant for dinner and breakfast, and I received meal tickets for these. I chose a plan that included a souvenir, and I also received two T-shirts. The fabric is very sturdy. These T-shirts look like this. The fabric is very sturdy, and the print is very cute. The print on the back is also very clear. The staff said it’s a good T-shirt that won’t shrink even after washing. So, I’m trying my best to flatten my stomach. I’m not sure if they have other colors, but they also have pink. The front desk staff were very helpful, kind, and gentle. It seems like the large size is out of stock, but they’ll ship it out later when it’s in stock. This is a map of the inn, and there are the Seiryukan and the Shinrinkan. The Seiryukan is near the front desk. The front desk is right when you enter, and the lounge is directly in front. Apparently, you can see various animals. The banquet hall is on the left, and the guest rooms are on the second floor. The Forest Hall is connected by a corridor. There is a sauna in front, and behind it are an indoor bath and an open-air bath. There are two types of saunas, but it seems that men and women alternate at certain times so that both can be used. There is also a family bath right next to it. I made a reservation for this at 4:30, so I’d like to try it out. The bathing fee is 3,000 yen per hour. It is a slightly pricey family bath. The fee for day-trippers is 800 yen per adult. Bathing hours are from 10:30 to 21:00. Last admission is at 20:00. Day-trippers can also use the family bath. Bathing hours are the same for guests, from 10:30 AM to 9 PM. The hot spring here is alkaline and simple, with a pH of 9.6. The spring temperature is a little high at 43.5°C. No water is added, but the water is circulated and filtered, and chlorinated. The first floor of the Forest Hall has a karaoke room, a library, a training room, a mahjong room, a ping-pong table, and a public telephone. The second and third floors are guest rooms. There’s signal here, but no signal on the way there. This is Tsubetsu Town, 86% of which is forest, so the starry sky is apparently beautiful, something you can’t experience in the city. I don’t think it will be captured on camera, but I’d love to look up at the sky at night. It’s time for my private bath reservation, so I’d like to go in. There’s a vending machine here, but it’s reasonably priced. They even sell drinks for 100 yen. This is a very conscientious hotel. This is the family bath. Let’s get started. Oh! It’s so nice! The changing room looks like this. It’s so stylish! It cost 2,000 yen for overnight guests. They even have water and a sofa. There’s a sauna in front, and an indoor and outdoor bath behind it. The sink looks like this, and you’ll need to bring your amenities and towels from your room. This is the bathroom . This is the bathroom. It’s nice. The shower is on the left, and body soap, conditioner, and shampoo are provided. Let’s get started. The water is just the right temperature. I think it’s about 41 degrees . It’s colorless, transparent, and odorless, but it’s slippery. This is a slippery hot spring. Behind the glass is a courtyard with a really nice atmosphere. I bathed with the lights off, and it was amazing. I got out of the hot spring. As they say, it’s a beauty bath, and it was incredibly slippery. The private bath is available for one hour from 4:30 to 5:30, and I intended to take my time, but there was still time. While I was sitting and waiting, various animals came by. They came to eat the food I was giving to the birds and squirrels. You can encounter wild animals you can’t see in the city. This is a paradise for animals, blessed with nature. It’s time for dinner, so I head to the restaurant. The drink bar is incredibly reasonable at 200 yen. There’s a courtyard right next to it. Dinner looked like this. These scallops are delicious. I think it’s Shiretoko chicken terrine. It smells good. There’s a lot of stuff in it. What is this? It’s like crab… Like crab paste. It would be amazing if the standard plan included something this luxurious. It tastes like nothing I’ve ever had . But it’s delicious. Cold pumpkin potage with snow crab. There’s so much shredded crab meat in it. I wonder if I can finish it all? There are still seven dishes to come. I forgot about the hot pot. I’ll have the kimchi hot pot. It’s quite spicy. I occasionally feel a presence on my left. I wonder if it’s an animal passing by? It’s strange to eat such stylish food in the mountains. This is definitely delicious. The cheese is amazing. This is the last meal. Then came dessert. Soft. Incredibly soft. Surprisingly so. Softly braised Hokkaido beef cheek. What is this cheek? Incredibly soft. The sauce was also delicious. This was Shiretoko chicken seasoned rice . This was my first time eating Shiretoko chicken . It’s chicken, but when it’s called Shiretoko chicken, it feels special. Apparently, you can have seconds of the seasoned rice and soup. Dessert was called “pineapple sorbet.” “Sorbet” apparently means sherbet. The pineapple flavor spread throughout your mouth. It was like eating pineapple. Thank you for the meal . They also had a lot of unusual souvenirs for sale. There were many items you wouldn’t find at a roadside station. I bought a souvenir. It was the hot spring water from Lamp no Yado. The hot spring water here was so smooth and delicious, so I bought it as a souvenir. I had dinner. It was delicious. I wonder if all of the dishes are original? It was a flavor I’d never tried before, but it was delicious and I was very satisfied. The portions are a little on the larger side, but even if they’re not enough, you can always get refills of the seasoned rice and soup, so I think you’ll be full. There’s an upgrade course, and for just a small additional fee, you can upgrade your meal. What surprised me most was the incredible dish next to it. The incredibly marbled meat was beautifully arranged, piled high on the plate, and I was stunned. I really regret upgrading. The standard plan was delicious enough, and I felt it was incredibly luxurious. Apparently, the stars are so beautiful that they even offer tours, but today it’s raining and cloudy, so I’m not sure if I’ll be able to see them… I’ll try. Unfortunately, I can’t see anything. There’s nothing I can do about it . Now, I’m going to take a bath in the large public bath and get a good night’s sleep. Good morning. I didn’t finish work at all, so I couldn’t use the large public bath or the morning bath. It’s already 7 o’clock, so I’ll head to breakfast. Breakfast was a buffet. This is part two. I had breakfast. It was delicious. I ate so much I couldn’t move. My impressions of staying at this inn are that the entrance is a very stylish space, and beyond the lobby is nature. We were able to encounter a variety of animals. The food was delicious, and honestly, I wish I had upgraded. The lobby staff were very polite and friendly, and I was very satisfied. As for the price, it was 33,840 yen for two adults, including one meal and two meals. That’s roughly 17,000 yen per person. This plan includes an original T-shirt. I highly recommend this place , as it’s a unique experience , allowing you to eat in this natural setting and encounter various animals. It was a little different from the Lamp Inns I’ve visited before, but it was still a lot of fun. If you have the chance, I highly recommend staying at this inn. Now, let’s check out. Now, let’s head to our next destination. It was a great inn. The free T-shirt was also a nice touch. By the way, that T-shirt was on sale for 2,200 yen. So, two would cost 4,400 yen. This time, I stayed at a hot spring inn deep in the mountains of Hokkaido. What did you think? I’m glad I was able to spend some extraordinary time. See you in the next video! Thank you for watching until the end.

It’s long time back to see Wata-lip
that was fun👍
Thank you for another very good video Watatabi-San. If the ryokan you stayed at is reachable by public transport, I would like to stay there, because it looks beautiful and the food looks tasty. But most of all, because it seems to be an amazing place to observe wild animals, which is something I very much enjoy. I wonder if this is also the same in May ?
What I dont like so much about this ryokan, is that day trippers and guest of the ryokan have the same hours for using the onsen. There is no time where only ryokan guests can use the onsen. And also, the onsen are not open in the morning ? Thats very unusual and very bad in my opinion. If I stay in a ryokan, I wish to enjoy the onsen in the afternoon, the evening and the morning.
I have been to Ainu Kotan and bought a marimo! Marimo island is very interesting. It was very cold on the day and I was the only person on the boat. I need to feed my marimo a bit more, it is not growing that much. Now want to go to Hokkaido again. Thank you!
❤❤❤
