A hot spring area with a history of 1,100 years. The spring quality is said to be the best in western Japan. Various regional issues and the worsening of decline. A rustic, retro hot spring town “Tawarayama Onsen” Press the subtitle button or CC button to enjoy the full subtitles. Hello everyone, this is Watatabi. I’m currently in Fukuoka Prefecture, but I have to go back to Kansai tomorrow for some business. So this time I’d like to make a detour to Yamaguchi Prefecture, which is on the way back. The location is Nagato City, located in the northwestern part of Yamaguchi Prefecture. I’m heading for the rustic, retro hot spring town “Tawarayama Onsen” that appears in the mountains. I’ve been there once before, but I can’t forget something about it, so I want to go back. I’ll stop by tourist spots along the way. I ‘ve entered Yamaguchi Prefecture. Shimonoseki. Towards the Kanmon Tunnel…oh, this way. There’s an aquarium and such. From here, I’ll drive along the mountain road and head for Shiratakiyama in Shimonoseki City. I’ll drive towards the Sea of Japan, passing by many mountains and villages. I’m looking forward to seeing what kind of scenery awaits me ahead . I saw many “Kawara Soba” signs, so I decided to have lunch. I stopped in because I saw a sign for Kawara Soba. This is in a hot spring area called “Kawatana Onsen”. There are a lot of customers, and it’s Saturday, so I’ll go right away. “Original Takase’s Kawara Soba Main Building” It seems like there are a lot of stores around here. There are many buildings, such as the South Main Building and the East Main Building. Amazing. There is also a courtyard. Kawara Soba 1300 yen (excluding tax). Unameshi 2300 yen (excluding tax). The soup is hot. The meat is on top like this. Seaweed on top, lemon on top… I put in seaweed, wasabi on top, and green onions. I realized how delicious this hitsumabushi is . Thank you for the meal . It was delicious. I ate Kawara Soba. It was incredibly delicious. It was a very popular restaurant, but the turnover was good. I was able to get a seat right away and eat my meal. The first time I ate Kawara Soba, it was at a restaurant called Choshuya in front of Kintai Bridge. I was really impressed the first time, but maybe it was the second time, so I wasn’t as impressed. This is just my personal opinion, but I remember the soup at the restaurant in Kintai Bridge was tastier. The soup there was sweet, but this one wasn’t as sweet. I guess it depends on your taste, but the hitsumabushi here was really delicious. As for the price, Kawara Soba was 1,300 yen (excluding tax) per person, and Unagimeshi was 2,300 yen (excluding tax). I think it was 5,390 yen (including tax) for two people for two servings of Kawara Soba and one serving of Unagimeshi. That was about the price . It seemed a little expensive, but it filled me up. I splurged since I came all the way to Yamaguchi. Well, let’s go for now. Thank you for the meal. I was heading towards the hot springs, but I found a hidden waterfall, so I headed there. It’s about 26km and 50 minutes by car from Kawara Soba to the waterfall. There seems to be a waterfall at about 530m above sea level on Mt. Shirataki. Can I go there? The road is closed 6km ahead, but I want to go 5km ahead. Can I go there? No, I wonder… why is the road closed? A landslide or something? A natural disaster like that? I don’t know why the road is closed . From here, we go up the mountain in one go. There are many windmills on the mountain. The altitude keeps rising. I wonder how many meters above sea level we are now. Oh, now we’re going down. Is this it? This is the parking lot. We’ve arrived. This is the parking lot. General vehicles cannot pass beyond this point. The road is right here. It’s a waterfall, but the waterfall is here. It’s really hard to see, but there was a sign here. We’ll go along the course called the Shirataki Course. Let’s head there right away. It’s a road, after all. There weren’t many reviews, so I’m not sure what it’s like, but… I’ll go for now. It’s really cold when you go into the shadows. It’s a little cold to wear short sleeves. Eh? I don’t know where the path is… Do I have to cross this river? This is somehow the path. There are no customers. It seems that there is a course from the parking lot where I just parked and a hiking course. I don’t know where the hiking course starts, but for now I’ll take the course from the parking lot, which is the easiest to understand. It’s a little cold… Will I warm up quickly if I walk? There’s pink tape, so I think it’s probably this way. There are trees growing all over the place like this, so it looks like I’ll get off the course. Am I right? This… Ah, but it looks like this way. Looking at it like this, it’s hard to tell which route is the route. Which way? Which way? Is it this way? Since it’s a waterfall, I think I should go in the direction of the river… I have no choice but to rely on this pink tape. Eh? This way, right? I don’t know the route… Wow, it’s cold! It’s really cold! Ah! Is it this way. Is it this? Ah, I see. I don’t know… I heard some noise… What is it? No, it’s amazing! It’s a really amazing place… There’s pink tape here and there, so I don’t know which is the right way… lol I wonder if it’s going to rain this way? There’s tape here too. The river flows in this direction, so I’ll go in this direction for now. Surrounded by steep rock walls, this part was enveloped in a mysterious world. In mountaineering terms, a canyon sandwiched between steep rock walls is called a gorge. Wow! Amazing! The steep rock walls are amazing… Oh, is that it? I found it! Is this it… There it is. It wasn’t a place where you’d get lost at all. This is the waterfall. Shirataki Shirataki A waterfall with a drop of about 5m in the mountains continues to flow unnoticed. Small fish can be seen in the emerald green waterfall basin. Around Shirataki, you can see the impressive gorge zone that continues downwards. The water is very clear, but it’s not very impressive. It’s really deep. There are a lot of fish swimming around. The area around the waterfall looks like this… It’s surrounded by very high rock walls. It’s a great place to play in the water. So that’s what it was like. I was wondering if I’d find the waterfall while adventuring, but it took less than five minutes. We got there in no time. It’s a place that anyone can easily get to. I was standing over there earlier, but now I’m on this side of the waterfall. It looks like this. It’s a place with a nice atmosphere. It’s nature. I don’t know what kind of fish they are, but there are lots of them. It’s so beautiful. Really beautiful. A completely different world was spreading underwater from the land. The fish living in the pool of the waterfall as if they were trapped make me feel the mystery of life. I feel as if I am in an aquarium, and I am overwhelmed with emotion as if I have discovered a mysterious world. I wonder if these fish were born here and will end their lives here? The fish in the river run away when you get too close, but they come closer when you put your hand in or get your camera close. Now, let’s go back to the parking lot. We are back. It looks like it will take less than 5 minutes. It seems that you can’t walk from here. Please do not go this way. By the way, this is the route. We are leaving for our next destination. Next, we head to “Ichinomata Sakura Park”. What! There are customers here! I’m sure you can get off here by car? I’m sure you can. There was no one here when I came here before. Yes, there really was no one here when I came here before, but there are a lot of people here today. They sell onions. They sell carp food here. It’s like this, it’s 100 yen. It is characterized by a mysterious landscape where the submerged forest peeks out from the water. It is more mystical in the early morning or on cloudy days. As the name suggests, Ichinomata Sakura Park has about 200 cherry trees planted. In spring, it is crowded with people who come to see the cherry blossoms. I was surprised to see that there were more customers than the last time I came. I came here thinking that there would be no one there, but it was full of customers. I head towards Tawarayama Onsen. Huh? There are no cars passing by at all. Why? It’s Saturday. I came to a manju shop. The manju here is really delicious, and it’s no exaggeration to say that I came here to buy these manju. Well, I’m off to buy some. I got it. It’s a Three Monkeys Manju. I was going to buy it while walking around the hot spring town, but I didn’t want it to be sold out, so I bought it first. It’s 50 yen each, and 16 pieces for 830 yen. I really recommend this. Last time I bought a set of monaka, but these manju were so delicious that I regretted it a little, so this time I only bought the manju. It’s very chewy and delicious, but I’ll head to the parking lot first. It’s retro. I arrived at the parking lot, and first I’ll have this bun. It contains two types of bean paste, black bean paste and white bean paste. This part is black, so I think it’s black bean paste. It looks like this. At first glance it looks like a normal bun, but it’s incredibly delicious. The last one was freshly made and still quite warm, but this one has been there for a while, but it’s still delicious. This time it’s white bean paste. It looks like this. Let’s eat. I can’t really tell the difference in taste lol But it’s still delicious. The expiration date is 5 days, but it seems to get harder as it goes, so it’s best to eat it as soon as possible. I did it… I bought a box of 16, but it was so delicious that I ate 6 by myself. This is the parking lot of Tawarayama Onsen. It was discovered about 1,100 years ago. A local hunter found some prey and shot an arrow at it, but the prey escaped at that time. After a while, the white monkey was washing its wound in a puddle, so the arrow was shot at it again . The white monkey disappeared immediately, and Yakushi Nyorai appeared in its place. The white monkey was an incarnation of Yakushi Nyorai. The water was warm and hot spring water. This is said to be the origin of Tawarayama Onsen. During the Edo period, this historic hot spring was used as a hot spring resort directly managed by the Mori family of the Choshu domain. It used to be a hot spring town, and many people from all over the country stayed here for long periods to cure their illnesses. The last time I visited was during the first three days of the New Year, and there were many customers. Today is Saturday, and the hot spring town is quite lively. Of course, the quality of the water is great, but the retro townscape is one of the highlights, so I stopped by on my way back to Osaka today and won’t be staying overnight, but I would like to stroll around the town and take a bath in the hot spring. There is a lot of grass next to the parking lot, but it is a promenade or walking path, and this makes me feel like I’m in the Showa era. There is a bridge right from the parking lot, and the townscape is extremely retro. The hot spring town has developed as a hot spring resort since ancient times, and was designated as a national hot spring resort in 1955. However, according to the Nagato City website, the number of bathers, which was 720,000 in 1972, has decreased to 120,000 in 2020 due to a decrease in the number of people visiting for hot spring treatments and the inn and hot spring management, which are the core industries, are declining. The aging population and declining birthrate are also causing various local issues, such as a decrease in economic activity due to a lack of people to carry on the workforce, and a decrease in the working-age population and the younger population, which is causing a decline in the function of the local community. The number of inns, which was 43 in the 1970s at its peak, has decreased to 16. Judging from the parking situation, it seems to be a popular hot spring, but most of the users are day-trippers from the neighborhood, and there are few overnight guests. The hot spring area itself is not that large. The townscape is nostalgic. This is the public bath. I think it was called “Shirozaru no Yu”. This is Shirozaru no Yu. It seems that there is a firefly festival on the 7th of June. It is held at Yamane Stadium. It is close to here, and there are yakitori, yakisoba, takoyaki, and food trucks. Bingo tournament, stage show, free firefly bus. There are a lot of initiatives. This is the shop where I bought the buns earlier. It looks like this. It’s really retro. Here is the map of the hot spring town. It’s pretty faded and hard to see, but… there are day baths at Machi no Yu and Shirozaru no Yu. There are also beauty salons and massages. There seems to be a grocery store. Restaurants and souvenirs. Even though this hot spring town is so small, it is full of charm. There is a well here. It seems that you can’t drink it, but it looks like water comes out. Wow, amazing. Water came out. There are very few people walking around town. The only people who are really here are those who are here for day baths. That means the quality of the spring water is that good. It’s clear that it’s not a tourist spot. The inside of the inn looks really interesting too. Unfortunately, I won’t be staying there tonight… If I have another chance, I’d like to stay there. If possible, I’d like to stay at an inn around here. It’s quite rustic. This is the town bath, but there are back alleys here, and there are many inns in the back alleys. It seems like you can spend a quiet time in a hidden detached house like this. I didn’t remember what the town looked like, but coming here again, it’s really retro. It looks like a coffee shop. It doesn’t seem to be open now. Below here is the main street, but there’s still more up. I think this area is probably private homes. There’s some construction going on. This building is quite charming. It doesn’t seem to be open anymore, but I wonder if they’ll start a new inn here. That’s all. The rest is the road. Is it okay to go this way? Is this… a temple? The light bulbs are so retro I can’t get enough of them. This is the first time I’ve seen a lion with eyeballs. It looks like you can see a bit of the town from here. The view isn’t that great, but… this is the popular Shirozaru no Yu. So, that’s Machi no Yu. There are many other inns and accommodations lined up. Around here is a large free parking lot. There is also a stylish cafe. I came out along the river. It seems that this inn is no longer in business. There are quite a few fish swimming around. What kind of fish are they? This is a guesthouse. There are quite a lot of inns. This inn is also called Yamashita Ryokan. (I don’t know if it’s still open.) Is this a restaurant? I would like to go to this Machi no Yu. The family bath seems to be on the second floor. This is the resting room. There are massage machines and other things. Tawarayama Onsen is ranked as the Yokozuna in the Heisei Onsen Rankings nationwide. So, it has the best spring quality in Western Japan. This is it. There are two family baths, “Ume” and “Take”. This time, I will be at this family bath called “Ume”. It’s spacious. It has a retro feel like this. Let’s take a look. Yes, it looks like this. I imagined it to be more retro, but it was different from what I expected. (In a good way) It’s open here. You can let in the outside breeze. It feels like a family bath. There is shampoo and body soap. The spring temperature seems to be 40 degrees. The spring temperature seems to be different for each of the Kaku Onsen in Tawarayama Onsen. The large bath below is 41.3 degrees and the pH value is 9.9. The flow rate is 64 liters per minute. “Shirozaru no Yu” seems to have a larger flow rate. It’s 97 liters per minute. The pH value is the same. I was told not to drain the water when I left, but to leave the water running when I left. The hot spring is colorless and transparent and has no smell. It’s just the right temperature. It says 40 degrees, but I think it’s probably around 41 degrees. As expected of the Yokozuna of the West, the water is really slippery or thick… That’s the kind of spring water. I think the shower probably uses the source. It was so slippery that I didn’t know if the shampoo and body soap were properly washed off. The price here is 3000 yen for 60 minutes for up to three people. After three people, an additional fee will be charged. So even if there are three people, it’s only 1000 yen per person, so I felt that it was a little expensive. I wanted to take a long soak, so I used this family bath. It’s an air conditioner, but it takes a long time for the air conditioner to come on, so it’s better to drive when you enter the room. The water was very thick and made my skin feel smooth. I went back to the car. The shop was already closed. Today’s after-bath Yakult fruit green juice. It’s made with apples, bananas, and young barley leaves, so I think it’s easy to drink. It doesn’t feel like green juice. It’s just fruit juice. It’s just a little sour. After a bath, it’s definitely carbonated. I’ve hidden a lot of things here. There was one. Also, I didn’t take a video of it, but they were selling mentaiko at the roadside station that had never been frozen. It was quite a lot and cost 1000 yen. It seems to be freshly made and shipped directly from the factory. This is uncolored mentaiko that has never been frozen. It seems that you can see Genji fireflies around here. If I have a chance today, I’d like to see them. Then I’m heading back to Osaka. It’s completely dark now. I read somewhere that there were deer. Because I read that deer were playing. There seem to be various places where you can see fireflies, but there was a firefly park 15 minutes away, so I went to see them. It’s a little late in the day. There are so many deer, so I’ll go slowly. Look ! There’s a deer! It’s a deer! There are so many deer ! At least it’s not a Hokkaido deer… I laughed! There’s a deer! A deer! It just got off. There were two of them. There are so many deer! Look! There’s a deer, look. There are so many deer… The car in front of me almost ran them over. This seems to be a parking lot. It’s kind of scary, it’s pitch black and a little creepy… You see, there are fireflies, but they don’t show up on the camera. This is a firefly. Look, it’s glowing. It’s glowing somehow. It doesn’t show up on the camera, but it’s flying around quite a bit. By the way, the location is called “Okunogawa Firefly Valley”. It’s 8:30 now, but the fireflies are still flying, so if you come a little earlier, you’ll be able to see more. It’s a bit disappointing. This is a toilet. I can’t give up, so I’ll try again at a place 3 minutes from here. What? What’s this? A cat? I was surprised… There are so many different animals. I looked a little, but it was no good, there were no fireflies. I think it was probably too late. It’s beautiful when it glows, but if you look closely, it’s a bug lol I’m really going home now. This time I visited Tawarayama Onsen in Yamaguchi Prefecture. What did you think? The quality of the spring water is the best in western Japan, so please visit it. See you again in the next video! Thank you for watching until the end.

  3. Oh, how beautiful, thank you. I wish you would have taken the drone above the waterfall so we could see what directly above the waterfall, possibly the source? 👏👏👏👏👏👏☺

  11. I missed 2 videos from you, because I was travelling in Italy. It was beautiful and we had amazing food, but it was also very hot. And unfortunately the extreme heat in parts of Europe is very hard on older people.

I still love your channel, but due to personal very sad reasons, I will probably not be commenting here in the near future.
