There are many things I’d like you to see in Kitanakagusuku, and one of them is the Nakamura House! This building is a designated
Important Cultural Property of Japan, taht miraculously escaped destruction
during the Battle of Okinawa in World War II. Its charm lies in the opportunity to see
a traditional Okinawan home. – Yes! Now, please come in a little!
– Wow! Amazing! So many things! Even though it’s a hot day today,
there’s so much greenery and trees, so you can feel the breeze,
and the shadows of these trees are really charming. – Let’s go inside! – Yes! Here we are! – Amazing! Tatami rooms, and with names!
– This one is commonly called “Ashagi.” – Yes! It’s a detached house!
– Yes! It’s a detached house! And as you can see, evry room is a 6-tatami room. We’ll go in here. This is like a living room,
a place where people gathered to drink tea and chat. But they had some cooking utensils,
so it also feels like like a kitchen! They secretly made local sake,
and that sake was stored here. – Secretly, you say!
– Like nowadays, permission was required. I see! Permission was needed!
From the dynasty, or the government! First, as you enter, there’s the ashagi on the right,
then the main house, the kitchen, and the livestock shed,
and behind the livestock shed is this pigsty. The pigsty! So, in other words, you enter from the right, starting from the highest position
and gradually working your way down to the pigs, right? But it’s actually the other way around! The pigsty is the most prestigious,
or let’s say the highest position. – Oh, really? – It’s a little different from our thinking! – The pigs’ thinking?
– The pigs’… the way of thinking of pigs! – Ah, the thinking at the time!
– Yes.
