遠軽町 街並と瞰望岩 Engaru Town Townscape and Ganbou Rock

遠軽町は北海道の北東部の北海道オホーツク総合振興局管内、紋別郡にある町。1896年(明治29年)に札幌で活動していた北海道同志教育会のキリスト教徒によって開拓が始まり、翌年当時の湧別村に集団入植が行われた。1910年(明治43年)に上湧別村に分村、1919年(大正8年)に遠軽村に分村、その後、遠軽村から生田原が分村(1925､大正14)、丸瀬布、白滝が分村(1946、昭和21）されたが、2005年(平成17年)に遠軽町、生田原町、丸瀬布町、白滝村の3町1村が合併し1919年当時の領域に戻っている。町名は町内の瞰望岩（がんぼういわ）を指していたアイヌ語の「インカルシ」(眺める所等の意味)に由来する。
Engaru Station was once a thriving railway station serving as a junction between the old Nayoro Main Line and the Sekihoku Main Line. The town’s main industries today are commerce, agriculture, forestry, and wood processing. Yamaha Music Craft Hokkaido, located in the town, produces and supplies wooden components for grand pianos manufactured by Yamaha, a major musical instrument manufacturer.
