古い町並み散歩#14|倉吉白壁土蔵群|江戸・明治・大正・昭和の風情が漂う町|鳥取県倉吉市|令和の時代に残る懐かしき風景

Thank you for watching. This is manpuku from Occhii-ch. For this walk through the old townscape, I’ll be exploring the Kurayoshi City Utsubuki Tamagawa Traditional Buildings Preservation District in Kurayoshi City, Tottori Prefecture, a town reminiscent of the Edo, Meiji, Taisho, and Showa periods. Many of the red-tiled, white-walled storehouses remain. Let’s get started! This area, reminiscent of the Edo, Meiji, Taisho, and Showa periods, was originally established as a castle town around Utsubuki Castle during the Muromachi period. During the Edo period, samurai residences were built around the Jinya (camp dwelling). Approximately 100 buildings from the Edo and Meiji periods remain, making this district a designated Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings. The white plaster walls, red Sekishu tiles, and black charred cedar wainscoting along the Tamagawa River create a unique landscape. The area has been selected as one of Japan’s “100 Beautiful Historical Landscapes” and “100 Fragrant Landscapes,” renowned for its retro atmosphere, which evokes the atmosphere of the past, and its high historical value. Today, I’ll be taking a walk around the Kurayoshi White-Walled Storehouses. We are walking along Honmachi Street (which runs through Uomachi, Higashi-Nakamachi, Nishi-Nakamachi, and Nishimachi). Many merchant buildings, including sake and soy sauce breweries, as well as Kurayoshi’s representative townhouses remain. Although demolished due to aging, the Hondori and Utsubuki shopping arcades continued all the way to Nishimachi. This was once the bustling center of Kurayoshi. Time now flows more slowly. The Toyoda Family Residence , built in 1900, features a gabled roof, brick roofing, a flat entrance, and a two-story wooden structure, preserving Kurayoshi’s traditional townhouse style. Taishayu, a public bathhouse that was open until November 30, 2022 (Reiwa 4). The bathhouse and main building are registered as national tangible cultural properties. When it first opened, it was called “Daisan Tsuru no Yu,” but because of the Izumo Taisha Kurayoshi branch temple next door to the south , it came to be called “Taishayu,” which is now its official name. I’ve walked around Honmachi Street so far. Next, I’d like to visit the White-Walled Storehouse Preservation District. The white plaster walls, red Sekishu roofing tiles, and black charred cedar wainscoting along the Tamagawa River in the Kurayoshi White-Walled Storehouses create a unique landscape. The plaster provides waterproofing, while the charred cedar planks enhance fire resistance and durability against wind and rain. The red roofing tiles are a part of the San’in region and originate from the Sekishu roofing tiles of the Iwami region of Shimane Prefecture. Because they are fired at a high temperature of over 1200°C, they are resistant to frost damage. The main hall of Dairenji Temple is a modern concrete building rebuilt in 1955. The shrine enshrines Daibenten Zeniarai Benzaiten, so I could have washed my coins there before heading home, but cashless payments have become a thing recently… I’m currently walking along Nakamachi Street, one of the components of the Kurayoshi White-Walled Storehouses. It’s a street lined with historic merchant buildings. From here onwards, you’ll find a frequently seen area, often featured in the media. Along the Tamagawa River, several gently curved stone bridges are built. The “Akagawara” area , a group of facilities known as “Akagawara,” includes buildings 1 through 11. The white-walled storehouses and buildings formerly used as sake breweries and soy sauce factories are now used in a variety of ways, including as a local product center, coffee shop, and gallery . They exude a retro charm, and time seems to flow slowly and peacefully. The town north of Tamagawa is called Togiya-cho (sword-sharpening town). It was named after the many houses that originally sharpened swords. Today , we walked through the Kurayoshi City Utsubuki Tamagawa Traditional Buildings Preservation District in Kurayoshi City, Tottori Prefecture, one of the filming locations for Episode 44 of “Otoko wa Tsurai yo.” What did you think?
