🌿 Sacred Japan | Ohjibaru Shrine – A Serene Walk Through the Birthplace of Myth
Today, we’d like to introduce Ohjibaru Shrine, located about an hour’s drive west of Miyazaki City.♪ Ohjibaru Shrine lies just 1.3 kilometers west of Sano Shrine, which we featured in the previous video. It sits at the foot of Mount Takachiho, the sacred mountain known for the Tenson Korin—the descent of the heavenly deities.
(Image: by Miyazaki Prefecture) This stone monument stands in one corner of the Ohjibaru Park parking area. Near the shrine, there are six ancient burial mounds dating back to the late 5th to early 6th centuries. At the entrance leading to the shrine, I found these lovely little flowers blooming.♪ Now, let’s head toward the main hall.♪ Actually, Sano Shrine, which I introduced in the last video, once stood here. But it was destroyed by an eruption of Mount Takachiho in the 6th century and later relocated to its current site. Ohjibaru Shrine was then built on that sacred ground. According to legend, this is the birthplace of Emperor Jimmu, the first emperor of Japan. Because of its special significance, Crown Prince Hirohito—later Emperor Shōwa—visited here in 1920, and many other members of the Imperial Family have also come to worship at this shrine. The Tenson Korin Festival was once a national event celebrating Japan’s divine origin myth—the heavenly descent of Ninigi-no-Mikoto. I found this signboard near the small shrine. Surprisingly, the shrine stands right on top of an ancient burial mound. There’s also something here that’s deeply connected to Emperor Jimmu. It’s said to be located behind this small shrine… Ah, here it is! This stone is called Ube-ishi, or “The Midwife Stone.”
According to legend, Princess Tamayorihime held onto this stone when she gave birth to Emperor Jimmu. Let’s take a look around behind the shrine. A quiet thatched-roof building stands peacefully there. Nearby, we found two statues of children. They’re said to represent Emperor Jimmu and his brother. It feels almost as if we’ve stepped back to Japan’s ancient tomb era. Let’s go behind the thatched building. These small, rounded hills are actually the ancient burial mounds. They haven’t been excavated in order to preserve its natural state. No one knows exactly when excavations stopped,
but records show that earthenware was found near Mound No. 6 around 1924. More than three million red spider lilies are planted around Ohjibaru Shrine,
creating a breathtaking view each year during the autumn equinox.♡
(Photo: by Morimori-san) When we visited on October 1st, the flowers had already passed their peak,
so we couldn’t see the field in full bloom. Still, the quiet, mysterious atmosphere here felt as if it were gently guiding us into an ancient world.
