鳴門の渦潮 Naruto Whirlpools
A trip to the Naruto Whirlpools in October 2025. The whirlpools are amongst the largest in the world, and they’re formed when water flows between Awaji Island and Shikoku as the tides change. In other words, there’s a tide difference between the Inland Sea and the Pacific Ocean.
I took a look at the water whirlpools from Ochaen Observatory, and then I went to Uzunomichi, which is a walkway suspended under the Ōnaruto bridge, which links Shikoku to Awaji Island.
The whirlpools are the largest in spring tides. And obviously, they’re not always guaranteed to be huge whirlpools, but just watching the flow of water, especially from the observation deck under the bridge, is quite impressive. I recommend it if you’re in the area.
