The morning drama “Bakebake” — this is one of its places. Matsue Ohashi Bridge. About one kilometer from Matsue Station, roughly a fifteen-minute walk. Stretching over the Ōhashi River, Matsue Ohashi has grown together with the castle town of Matsue— a symbol of the city itself. It was the year 1607, in the Keichō era. The bridge construction failed again and again. To keep the bridge from being washed away, a young man named Gensuke was offered as a human sacrifice. The central pier where he was buried came to be known as “Gensuke-bashira.” This bridge, which appears several times in “Bakebake,” was, for nearly three centuries, the only bridge linking the north and south of the castle town, quietly watching over people’s daily lives. In Episode 7 of Week Two, Toki and Sawa compare their own fate to that of Gensuke, the human pillar. Today, beside the seventeenth-generation bridge, a monument stands quietly in his memory. From the bridge, you can even see Mount Daisen in the distance on a clear day. We’ll continue, slowly and gently, to introduce the memorable places from “Bakebake.” We hope you’ll enjoy them along the way.
