【ホテル宿泊記】ザ・リッツ・カールトン日光の全てを超詳細レビュー | 温泉大浴場、アフタヌーンティー、アクティビティ、食事、SPA、客室

This time, I took a three-day, two-night trip to Nikko in Tochigi Prefecture. While driving would be nice, I decided to take the train, which I’d been curious about. I was lucky enough to secure a reservation for one of the four private rooms on the Tobu Railway’s tourist express train, the Spacia X, which launched in 2023. There are various other seating options, and reservations can be made one month in advance. The train essentially connects Asakusa with Kinugawa Onsen in Nikko. The seats and design are custom-made, making the journey itself a pleasure. Another major attraction is the cafe counter in car 1. They offer a wide variety of ingenious menu items featuring Nikko and local specialties. The staff are very helpful and patient with their guidance. The cafe counter is located here. While a numbered ticket is usually required, private compartment passengers are free to use it. I purchased craft beer and snacks to enjoy in my private room. The Nikko Lager, original blend coffee, and potato snacks are available exclusively on the Spacia X. The quiet and relaxing space allowed me to relax, and two hours flew by before I knew it. Incidentally, although I wasn’t able to reserve one this time, there is also a premium “Cockpit Suite” available. Thanks to the Spacia X, my journey to Nikko was extremely enjoyable. I arrived at Tobu Nikko Station. I headed to the parking lot right next door and boarded the bus. The shuttle bus for The Ritz-Carlton Nikko, where I would be staying, operates on the following schedule. It’s been a while since my last visit to Oku-Nikko, The Ritz-Carlton Nikko. Mount Nantai came into view. I climbed Irohazaka, gaining altitude. It took about 45 minutes to arrive at the hotel. The last time I visited was three years ago in the winter, when the landscape was blanketed in snow. I’m looking forward to this stay surrounded by refreshing greenery. I have plenty of activities planned. Of course, I’m also looking forward to dinner, breakfast, and afternoon tea. I also had the privilege of taking photos of the hot springs, which I’d like to share. Once again, the hotel opened in 2020. The bell that rings to pray for a safe journey , “The Ritz-Carlton, Nikko,” is still ringing. I ring it right away. This is Oku-Nikko’s best seat, overlooking Lake Chuzenji and Mount Nantai. Let’s head inside. The high ceilings, the warmth of wood, and the spacious, wide corridors are undeniably beautiful. My heart leaps with excitement. As with my last stay, I check in at the bar counter. The fireplace gently flickers, and the lush green scenery outside the window is a delight . I’m given a hand towel and a welcome drink. I’m given information about activities and receive my room key. A kimono-clad staff member escorts me to my room. They also offer friendly recommendations for restaurants along the way. The lobby area is spacious and flexible. Tea is carefully brewed in front of the guests, filling the air with a delightful aroma. As I felt it last time, I really love this wide, linear corridor. Behind the elevator is The Ritz-Carlton’s first large hot spring bath. I head to the top floor, the fifth floor. Large windows everywhere create a sense of openness and allow you to feel the changing seasons. This room looks like this one. I’d like to begin the room tour. The wooden room key is adorable. Excited! The first thing that catches my eye is the beautiful lattice screen. A space where you can take off your shoes and relax. The entrance hall features a highly designed and welcome addition. This 57-square-meter room, the “Lake Chuzenji View Room,” is breathtaking, as always. I rush to the window. Oku-Nikko in the summer. How refreshing! All rooms have private balconies, a luxury. You can look down on Lake Chuzenji, a highland lake at an elevation of 1,269 meters. And to the right, Mount Nantai, the volcano that created Lake Chuzenji, is shrouded in clouds today. I hope you can see it during your stay. Looking down, you can see the torii gate of Futarasan Shrine and the restaurant where you’ll be enjoying dinner tonight. Lake Chuzenji has long been a beloved summer resort for both Japanese and foreigners, with villas built by embassies from various countries. In autumn, it’s a famous spot for viewing autumn leaves, and in winter, it transforms into a magical world of snow, allowing for beautiful scenery to be enjoyed year-round. Turning around, let’s take a look around the room. I found a wooden box on the table. It contained Kyoho and Muscat grapes. As a welcome amenity, it was filled with Japan’s two most prized grapes. The living area and bedroom are separated by glass doors, creating a convenient layout. There’s a sofa with a large seat. It’s the perfect place to relax. This area also has a lattice design. It connects to the bathroom with a sliding door, further enhancing the sense of openness. Opposite the sofa is a large TV. The back arm extends, allowing it to face the bed. Next to the sofa is a charming minibar resembling a tea cabinet. On top of it are mini bonsai trees, a photo book about Japan, and, here, a tea set. A beautifully textured teapot and teacups. Inside the tea caddy are Japanese teas, easily accessible via teabags. Let’s take a look inside the minibar. The light comes on when you open the accordion-style sliding door. The minibar items are neatly stored. This drawer can also be pulled out for easy access to the coffee maker and kettle. There’s canned water, an ice bucket, glasses, and more. The minibar menu is as shown here. Opening the drawer, you’ll find alcohol, snacks, and coffee capsules. Under the drawer, you’ll find high-quality C&S and cutlery. TWG tea. Sencha tea was also available. The large drawer serves as a refrigerator. The contents are as shown here. They specialize in Japanese beer, as well as plum and yuzu drinks. Head to the bedroom area. You can choose between a king-size bed or a double like this one. There’s a nightstand between the beds, complete with a light switch, USB outlet, and Bluetooth speaker. Turning around, you’ll see the bathroom . A beautiful door changes appearance depending on the light. A cabinet with a charming presence. Further inside, you’ll find a view bath. It’s a picturesque scene, like a snapshot of Lake Chuzenji. Each sink is separate and convenient, with one on each side. The quaint sinks are lovely. There’s a ceiling-mounted mirror with lights on both sides. The body milk and soap are from “diptyque’s Philosykos.” Amenities for one person are lined up in a shallow drawer nearby. When they’re lined up , they look like this. This is what the bathroom looks like again. It’s very spacious, with a beautiful, linear design. The shampoos and soaps are also from “diptyque’s Philosykos.” The bathtub is very large and deep. Bath salts are also provided. On the other side of the bath is the toilet. I wonder what’s in there? I found a hair dryer. Towels are at my feet. Bathrobes are on the wall. Finally, there’s a waiting room near the entrance. It’s spacious and looks very convenient. There are beautiful, high-quality hangers lined up. Here are the yukata and in-house bag. My friend looks like this when she wears them. So cute. A furoshiki bag made from a single piece of fabric. What do you think? Five years after opening, the rooms remain as beautiful and comfortable as ever. I’d like to spend a luxurious, relaxing time here, refreshing myself. Now, let’s take a walk inside the hotel. Near the elevator on the first floor, there is a lovely corner like this. There are lions that represent the “see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil” philosophy, as well as lions wearing the hotel’s indoor clothing. There are original hotel goods and tourist guidebooks. This straight corridor on the first floor is pleasant to walk through no matter how many times you walk through it. The lobby is spacious and makes you want to spend time there. There are also many things to see in the surrounding area. Kegon Falls is also nearby. Outside the large windows, a beautiful garden spreads out, making it a truly cozy place. You can enjoy tea, read a book, or admire the art scattered throughout the space. I saw people brewing tea here when I checked in, and it was an elegant experience. Near the entrance was the reception desk. A magnificent bonsai and a single-piece desk. The indirect lighting added to the special atmosphere. The entrance also featured a space for relaxing and waiting for your car, like this one. A large wooden entrance door. A panel depicting a feudal lord’s procession graced the shelves gently separating the reception area from the reception. And at the very back, you could see the dinner restaurant “Lakehouse” from your room. They apparently offer a takeaway menu during the day to accompany your stroll around the area. This is the Japanese restaurant where you can have breakfast. The Japanese Restaurant by The Ritz-Carlton, Nikko. They use a wide variety of ingredients from Tochigi Prefecture, and offer dishes that emphasize the flavor of the ingredients, as well as local sake. In addition to breakfast, you can also enjoy lunch and dinner. The beautiful and delicate traditional Tochigi crafts are scattered throughout the space, creating a beautiful space with a design that seems to connect to the garden. From here, we move on to an area I didn’t share in my previous review. With special permission, I’ll share the wellness area. Further ahead is the large hot spring bath. The fitness studio and spa are also located here. First, the fitness studio. Large windows let in natural light. Apparently it’s open 24 hours a day. Each machine is provided with water and a towel. Water and fruit are available on a nearby shelf. There’s also a device for online workout lessons. We walk through a mysterious corridor and further inside. This is the treatment area. There’s the reception, and products used for treatments are displayed here. We’re shown the treatment room by ESPA, a British spa brand . The lighting is deliberately dimmed, creating an extraordinary approach. I was surprised. It’s a special room with large windows and a hot spring. Apparently, there are also options for enjoying the hot spring. Surrounded by lush nature, this seems like a wonderful place to relax both body and mind. Nikko-inspired craft designs can be seen everywhere. Up ahead is the large hot spring bath. It’s as elegant as you’d expect. It’s spacious, clean, and comfortable. This is the men’s changing room. There are all sorts of amenities. The whole area, including lockers, looks like this. Of course, towels are provided. Now, let’s head inside the large hot spring bath. I was surprised at how spacious it was. This is The Ritz-Carlton brand’s first large hot spring bath. Apparently, the water is drawn from the source of Nikko Yumoto Onsen, known as a hidden hot spring since its discovery over 1,200 years ago. The high ceilings and generous use of Oya stone create a space with an open-air bath. It’s wonderful. Its milky white color, which looks light blue in the light, is beautiful. It’s great in summer, but the autumn foliage and winter snowscapes are also fantastic. There’s also a sauna and a cold bath. The cold bath is impressive. Finally, there’s a lounge where you can relax after your bath. I’d like to take a walk around the hotel. This is within Nikko National Park, and a 20-30 minute drive takes you to the World Heritage Site. This unique location allows you to enjoy the best of both worlds. Dinner is served at the “Lakehouse,” a separate building at the end of a long corridor, with lovely terrace seating. Mount Nantai is the sacred mountain of Nikko Futarasan Shrine. And Lake Chuzenji, created by its eruption. The large red torii gate stands out against the blue sky, making you stand tall. I spotted a monument commemorating the 2023 G7 summit. People enjoying the lake on pleasure boats and other boats. The hotel nestles close by. Mountain bike rentals are available for easy strolls. I strolled around the hotel and relaxed, enjoying the leisurely flow of time. It’s truly a joy to escape the hustle and bustle. It’s finally time for the long-awaited dinner. The restaurant features dishes featuring vegetables and produce from Tochigi’s natural beauty. The design is inspired by a boathouse. There’s terrace seating on the first and second floors. Large windows offer views of Lake Chuzenji. The space is stylish and tasteful. Apparently, the restaurant is overseen by Kobayashi Kanji, the owner and chef of the two-star Michelin restaurant “villa aida.” See the drink menu here. They also offer pairings and Nikko-themed dishes. We begin with a toast with a gorgeous Italian sparkling wine. The amuse-bouche is a puree of “Funaishiimo,” a type of taro, with a salted lemon sauce. It’s incredibly smooth, and the refreshing flavor of the salted lemon is delightful. Trout roe and baked sweet potato add texture to the dish. Before we knew it, the sky had taken on a romantic hue. We couldn’t help but step out onto the terrace and gaze upon it with our friends. Next came a delightful dish that resembled a flower field. We were served a brand of chicken raised cage-free in Tochigi’s lush natural environment. It featured flavorful root vegetables, carrot puree, vegetable broth espuma, and coriander powder. Next came a dish charmingly decorated with venison and tree stumps: Nikko maitake mushroom risotto. My favorite Nikko maitake mushrooms, rich in aroma and flavor. Made with a blend of over 50 varieties of rice, the dish offers a delightful texture. Then came pumpkin penne, gorgeously enhanced with marigolds and Parmesan cheese. Western pumpkin, snow-capped pumpkin, and Tochigi Prefecture’s Kanuma lomon pumpkin. Three different pumpkins were used, each offering a different flavor. Next came fluffy red sea bream. They use sustainably sourced fish, regardless of brand or variety. The foamy sauce was made with skin-fermented Koshu wine. Tamari-pickled pickled radishes were garnished with Myojin shichimi and other local flavors. I tried Nikko Cola again, which had impressed me the last time I tried it. The complex flavor, made with over 10 different spices, was addictive. For the meat dish, I had Tochigi Shimofuri Highland beef top sirloin. It was served with a fond de veau base and a slightly bitter sauce made with burnt lemon. It was garnished with leafy vegetables, fromage blanc, and wasabi, which complemented the mellow meat in an interesting way. For dessert, we had a lovely pear dish. We enjoyed Tochigi Prefecture’s Kosui sake in various styles. The lavender vinegar added a real impact. Tochigi is home to a wealth of truly delicious ingredients. We finished with coffee and guimauve. After a delightful and delicious dinner, we were in better spirits than usual and more talkative than usual. We stopped here and there to take in the beautiful moments as we returned to our room. Upon returning, the room had been beautifully turned down, and there were more water, glasses, and amenities by our pillows. We also had dried mandarin oranges. Tomorrow, we’ll enjoy many activities. Good night. Good morning. It’s the morning of our second day. The weather looks like it’s intermittently sunny and rainy. We get ready and head to breakfast. We leisurely stroll through the quiet hotel to the restaurant. We walk through a beautiful corridor designed with Kanuma Kumiko woodworking and the latest technology. We tell them our room number and are shown to our room. We ‘re told that outdoor dining is available, so we head outside to enjoy the fresh air. This hotel is famous for its lavish and delicious breakfasts. You can choose from Japanese or Western set menus. There is also a free-to-eat menu in the restaurant. Free-range egg pudding and yogurt. Honeycomb, cereals, and nuts. Bottled milk from Tochigi Prefecture, coffee milk. Original Yamakaba tea commemorating the hotel’s 5th anniversary, and Tochigi juice made from 100% first-pressed fruit juice. Looking at the restaurant again, it is truly beautiful. There is also a sushi counter and a teppanyaki counter, so I would like to enjoy dinner there next time I come. I returned with drinks and puddings that caught my eye. A salad made with local vegetables arrived. It was fresh, and the simple original dressing was delicious. This was boiled tofu. The aroma of yuzu, the flavor of the dashi broth, and the richness of the soybeans were impressive. Then a large wooden box appeared. The excitement of the moment the lid was opened in front of my eyes was incredible. Then, one after another, miso soup made with local miso, rice made with locally grown rice, Next, bread, local jam, and butter arrived. The bread was branded with a cute stamp. Here’s what was inside the wooden box containing the Japanese food I ordered. There were many carefully selected dishes made with generous amounts of local ingredients. It was great to be able to try a little bit of everything. The presentation was beautiful and the flavors were excellent. The roast beef was moist and delicious. There were more square portions and a wider selection than last time. There were many nutritious, simple side dishes, perfect for breakfast. I was also happy to see the variety of fruit options. The natto had kelp, black beans, and barley. Here’s my friend’s Western-style meal. I’ll be having the Western-style meal tomorrow, so I’ll share more details then. It was a satisfying breakfast that I’ll want to take my time to savor. Today, we’ll enjoy Nikko through various activities. First, we’ll try zazen. Every morning, a monk from Nikko-san Chuzenji Tachiki Kannon Temple visits us, and guests can participate free of charge. Zazen is a form of Buddhist meditation practice in which you sit quietly, regulate your posture, and breathe to calm your mind. We began the activity after being gently instructed on proper posture. If the weather is nice, we sometimes do it outdoors. We sat cross-legged in the morning sun, breathing and conversing, enjoying a comfortable time. Along the way, we also experienced a keisaku, a technique in which a monk hits us on the shoulder with a stick. I was a bit worried that it would be a loud slap, but it was actually a gentle technique to loosen up stiff muscles. Anyone can easily experience this uniquely Japanese moment of mental relaxation. My distracting thoughts and anxieties subsided, and it became a special experience. Now, we moved on to our next activity, an experience only possible here. We took a short drive in the hotel’s car. We set off with the activity staff. Along the way, we spotted a walking trail being explored by another activity. It seemed like a fun stroll surrounded by nature. We drove for a while, admiring Lake Chuzenji from a high vantage point. Before we knew it, we had arrived at our destination. Standing before us was the impressive Chuzenji Temple , an ancient temple founded in 784 as a branch temple of Nikkozan Rinnoji Temple. The principal image is the “Tachiki Kannon,” an eleven-faced, thousand-armed Kannon carved directly into a standing tree . It stands on the shores of Lake Chuzenji and has been the subject of prayers for over 1,200 years. Here, you can enjoy the experience of making prayer beads. Prayer beads are Buddhist objects used to calm the mind. Experience this culture and quietly reflect on yourself. There are various patterns based on wrist size, size, and number of pieces you want to use. A wide variety of natural stones and woods are available. They’re all beautiful, and it’s hard to decide which one to use. They come in a variety of sizes, and because they’re natural stones, each one has its own unique expression. Even the same Indian jade can be so different. Each stone has its own meaning, so it might be a good idea to choose one based on that. Concentrate on connecting each stone you’ve chosen. It’s finished. I made mine like this. A monk can even perform a prayer on the completed prayer beads. Your handmade prayer beads will be imbued with the power of gentle prayer. We were also given a tour of the Chuzenji temple grounds. We visited the “Tachiki Kannon” (standing tree deity), carved from a single tree, and the water of longevity and a substitute lump. From the elevated corridor, we enjoyed a spectacular view of Lake Chuzenji. It was wonderful. It evoked the romance of 1,200 years. Making prayer beads and admiring the temple cleared our minds. Finally, we received a temple seal. Chuzenji Temple, the center of faith in Oku-Nikko, is about a 15-minute walk from the hotel. It’s definitely worth stopping by during your stay. We arrived in the lobby for afternoon tea. It was an open and truly pleasant space, making us want to take a deep breath. Our first stop was “Kiku no Yu,” which we visited in September. We enjoyed the aroma of chrysanthemums and warmed our stomachs. We chose from six types of Japanese tea. They brewed our chosen tea three times, allowing us to enjoy the different flavors. Next, we had a cup of cold-brewed green tea steeped for over 12 hours, combined with soda. A separate plate of savory dishes arrived. The tea aroma was delightful. Sweet potatoes shaped like roasted sweet potatoes. Cute and delicious. I chose hojicha (roasted green tea), which they roasted right in front of me. It’s a shame I can’t share that aroma with you. A beautiful, art-like stand arrived. The autumn menu seems to be inspired by autumn leaves. Here’s the menu. It has a seasonal feel. Then, the first brew of each guest’s chosen tea is served. As always, this stand is truly exciting. Let’s eat. The ingredients used are delicious local ingredients, such as Natsuotome and Nikko Maitake mushrooms. As I mentioned last time, this place is 1,200 meters above sea level. The temperature and baking time of baked goods also require careful consideration. The scones are a mix of classics and unique varieties using Tochigi ingredients, making them fun and delicious. The plate on the stand features a maple leaf design. This is an apple pie shaped like a glossy apple. Tacos made with “Mochikinuka,” a brand of rice from Tochigi Prefecture. Crispy open sandwiches topped with bacon and truffles. Mini pies of beef cheek and carrots. The tart, made with Tochigi Prefecture’s “Natsuotome” strawberries, offers a perfect balance of sweet and sour. The beloved Shine Muscat grapes are also a must-have this time of year. The daifuku (rice cake) is topped with a jelly made with autumn leaf extract, and the leaves on top are edible. It’s served with a Japanese chestnut Mont Blanc and Japanese black tea meringue. The second brew is perfectly timed. The second brew is meant to capture the umami, and the third brew is meant to linger with the aftertaste. The sweet potato chips, decorated with autumn leaves and a small rake, are garnished with the perfect autumnal touch. Everything was delicious and satisfying this time, too. It was afternoon tea, reminiscing about the autumn in Nikko. As evening approached, I had another exciting experience planned for the day, but the area was shrouded in fog. However, the sky cleared at my reserved time. I was so happy. I set off, overjoyed. We boarded the hotel’s car and headed to our destination. We drove for a few minutes, enjoying the view of Lake Chuzenji. After a while, the car stopped and we were guided to the lake. We’re about to enjoy a “sunset stroll on the water.” We’ll be spending the day on Lake Chuzenji aboard this custom-made MEGA SUP. Apart from donning a life jacket, no special preparations are required. A guide, towels, and tea sets will accompany us. We set off. The boat’s size allows for easy leg stretching and stability. Surrounded by silence, we enjoy a graceful stroll on the lake. We depart just as the sun sets, enjoying the sunset that bathes the lake in a crimson hue and the moonlight that signals the approach of night. Right in front of us is a mother and baby duck. So adorable! We observe them from a distance for a while. The water’s clarity is clearly visible. The hazy mountains and lush greenery are beautiful. The tea brewing makes the moment even more delightful. Floating on Lake Chuzenji, said to be the lake closest to the sky in Japan, offers a special view of Mount Nantai from the lake. It’s exceptional. It was a special experience only possible at The Ritz-Carlton Nikko. I hope everyone will enjoy this luxury. A car will come to pick us up on the way back, allowing us to return to the hotel smoothly. Tonight, we will have a light dinner at the in-room dining area and relax with our friends. When we returned to our room, we found more dried fruit. I’m so happy. We ordered Nikko udon and soba noodles from the in-room dining area. They contained Nikko maitake mushrooms, vegetables, and yuba, and were very soothing. Well, goodnight . Good morning. It’s the morning of our third day in Nikko. Even in the rain, the scenery is so beautiful it’s almost magical. Looking closely, we can see the leaves starting to change color here and there, and I’ve grown fond of Lake Chuzenji, where we went SUP yesterday. This morning, we decided to have breakfast in our room. There’s no extra charge, and we can enjoy breakfast in our rooms. This morning, we both ordered Western and Japanese food, the opposite of yesterday’s. The large windows and balcony give a sense of openness even in our rooms. It also feels private, which is nice. Here’s this morning’s menu. It’s different from yesterday’s. There are so many options. Here’s the Japanese food. They all look delicious. The meat and fish menu was lavish this morning. The salads were gorgeous and fresh. A wide variety of teas were available. They even brought plenty of hot water. Today, let’s take a closer look at the Western cuisine. You can order your favorite egg dishes. I chose eggs Benedict . They also offer roast beef from Tochigi Prefecture. The bite-sized French toast is delicious. Like the Japanese cuisine , they offer a wide variety of fruit . Western-style chawanmushi (steamed egg custard) captures the aroma of maitake mushrooms . I also encountered a sustainable fish at dinner. This morning’s dish was red sea bream. There were also other dishes that would pair well with alcohol: turnip with a tapenade sauce, adding a Mediterranean flavor. A fresh and colorful salad, even for Western dishes. Finally, three kinds of bread. The baskets are cute, and the branding is nice. Bottled milk and other items are also available upon request. Yogurt and other items are just as delicious as in a restaurant. The jam and butter on the bread are also from Tochigi Prefecture. It was an amazing breakfast. Perhaps the best in Japan. We savored the meal leisurely. Our three-day, two-night stay was coming to an end, and it was time to depart. Packing our bags, we headed to the lobby to catch the bus to the station. The sophistication of the Ritz in the city and the serenity of the Ritz surrounded by nature each have their own special charms. This relaxed, spacious atmosphere truly refreshed me. I’d like to continue relaxing and forgetting about time, but it was time to check out. I was delighted to receive another original charm, the color of which changes each year, to pray for a safe journey. I was touched to receive a beautifully framed photo taken during an activity, complete with a message. Experienced first-class hospitality, my heart was filled. I felt like I could enjoy the hectic daily life that awaited me. This cleansing of the soul was enough to make me feel that way. The Ritz-Carlton Nikko celebrated its fifth anniversary. Everything had deepened, and the space had become even more comfortable. Through activities like strolling on the lake, zazen meditation, and prayer bead making, I was able to enjoy a truly enriching time here. We boarded the bus and headed to Nikko Station. Many staff members saw us off. I would definitely like to visit again. Nikko’s nature changes with the seasons, and whenever you visit it is a place that will give you new discoveries and peace of mind. I would highly recommend this resort to anyone who wants to take a short trip from Tokyo and spend some time relaxing. Thank you for reading to the end. Where should I go next? That’s all from Lily.
