今回は山口県柳井市にあります湘江庵の柳と井戸の紹介です。
「柳井」地名発祥の地との言い伝えがある曹洞宗のお寺です。
今から約1400年前、豊後の国（大分県南部）満野長者の娘、般若姫が橘豊日皇子（のちの用明天皇）に迎えられ上京する途中、平郡島沖でひどい嵐に遭って引き返し、柳井津の入江で里人に清水を求められたそうです。
その時、こちらの井戸の清水を差し上げたところ、姫は大変おいしいと喜ばれ、お礼にと井戸の傍らに柳の楊枝を挿しました。
すると、一夜にして芽を吹き、柳の巨木となったと伝えられています。
この井戸の水を飲むと般若姫のように身も心も美しくなれると言われています。
また、境内西側に建つ御堂では、日本三体の虚空蔵菩薩のひとつを拝むことができます
This is a Soto Zen temple that is said to be the birthplace of the place name “Yanai.”
Approximately 1,400 years ago, Princess Hannya, the daughter of a wealthy man named Mitsuno in Bungo Province (southern Oita Prefecture), was on her way to Kyoto to be welcomed by Prince Tachibana Toyohi (later Emperor Yomei), when she encountered a terrible storm off the coast of Heigun Island and turned back. She then went to an inlet in Yanaitsu and asked the villagers for clean water.
At that time, he offered her some pure water from the well, which the princess was delighted with, saying it was delicious, and as a token of his gratitude, he stuck a willow toothpick next to the well.
It is said that overnight, the well sprouted and grew into a giant willow tree.
It is said that if you drink the water from this well, you will become as beautiful in body and mind as Princess Hannya.
You can also worship one of Japan’s three Kokuzo Bosatsu statues in the hall located on the west side of the temple grounds.
