Hokkaido’s hidden places and breathtaking views. Press the subtitle or CC button to enjoy full subtitles. Hello everyone, this is Watabi. This time, I’m in Niigata City, Niigata Prefecture, heading to a certain place. First, I’ll arrive at my first destination, and then I’ll stock up on food since it’ll be a long journey from there. I’m excited to start a new journey. I can’t wait to see what kind of trip it will be. This time, I’m planning a trip of about a month, and first I’ll head to the port in Niigata City, Niigata Prefecture. As you may have noticed, I’m heading to Hokkaido on the Shin Nihonkai Ferry. We depart at 12:00 and the voyage to Otaru is approximately 16 hours and 30 minutes. Otamoi Jizo-son is a famous tourist spot in Otaru, but since I visited it last time, I’d like to try a different spot this time. First, I’ll buy some food at this 7-Eleven. I’ve bought some . Let’s set off again. We’re almost there. This is it. I’ve arrived at the Niigata Ferry Terminal of the Shin Nihonkai Ferry. This time, I’ll be traveling around Hokkaido on this Shin Nihonkai Ferry, taking my car with me. I’ll be boarding this ferry called “Lavendar.” Its total length is 197.5 meters, its gross tonnage is 14,214 tons, and its passenger capacity is 600. It cost 9 billion yen to build , which is more than I could ever afford in my lifetime, no matter how hard I worked. My first stop on this incredible ferry was Otaru, Hokkaido. I actually wanted to go to Tomakomai, but as of midnight last night, there were no seats available, so I headed for Otaru. I booked online and received my ticket, so I could board without going to the counter. There’s an hour until departure, so I decided to wait in my car. I’m already surrounded by cars. It’s a bit nerve-wracking during this time before boarding. Boarding has begun. Cars are loading onto the ship one after another. Now it’s time to depart. I’ve safely boarded. First, I’ll grab my luggage and head to my room. This is Room 418. This is what it looks like when you open the door. First, the door on the right. As soon as you enter, there’s a toilet and a washroom. This is the shower room. There’s a TV and a desk in front of the toilet door. Beyond the toilet, there are two beds, and you can enjoy the view from the window. It’s a simple room like this. This room is called the “State A Twin.” There was a larger room with two sofa beds for the same price, accommodating four people, but it didn’t have a desk, so I chose this one. Since I’m only going to sleep, a bed is enough. There’s already luggage in front of the bed, but there’s a refrigerator and closet. The cost for two adults and a car was 53,000 yen. The car, by the way, is less than 5 meters long. This is a diagram of the interior of the ship, and half of it is guest rooms. It starts at the entrance on the fourth floor and goes up to the sixth floor. There seems to be karaoke and a game corner at the entrance. There’s a restaurant and a shop on the fifth floor. The sixth floor has an observation deck, a training room, and a large public bath. We’re about to set sail, and we’ll be sailing across the ocean now. Here’s the captain. I’d like to take a stroll around the ship. This is the entrance. The entrance is bright and spacious, with a large monitor and an open ceiling. I got a stamp, so I stamped it as a souvenir. Don’t break it! Lol ? Is that even possible? This is the game room. It’s a small game corner like this. Over there is the shop. They sell Hokkaido souvenirs here, and even though I’ve just left, I’m already excited about Hokkaido before I even arrive. If you’re a little hungry, they also sell instant noodles and bread. This is the restaurant. It seems you can pay by credit card with the tablet ordering system. On the 6th floor, there is a large public bath, an open-air bath, and a sauna. And it looks like this. This is what the training room looks like. This is the observation deck. I bought some from the shop. It’s a butter-flavored “Happy Turn” (sweets). Next is this. I wanted scallops, but they only had herring roe, so I bought that instead. This is “Yoguruppe (lactic acid bacteria drink).” I thought “Yoguruppe” was from Kyushu, but they had “Yoguruppe” from Hokkaido. It says it’s made in Hokkaido. I bought three of these at the shop. I’ll put them in the fridge and eat them later. Last time, I got really drunk, so I thought I’d bring motion sickness medicine, but I forgot. You can tell by the lights, the ship is rocking quite a bit. I haven’t had lunch yet, so I’ll have that. Speaking of Hokkaido, the Yakitori Bento from Hasegawa Store is a must-have. Let’s get started. I bought this at the 7-Eleven I went to earlier. I’ll have this bento. I wasn’t very hungry, so I bought a small bento. It uses shredded Hokkaido autumn salmon, so I feel like I’m in Hokkaido. It didn’t fit in the bento box, but I bought coleslaw and chicken. I want to enjoy Hokkaido to the fullest, so I’ll save money on the boat. So that’s what I had for lunch today. I’ll have dinner at the restaurant. It’s delicious. I heard on the ship’s announcement that there will be a piano and vocal concert. I’m eating, so I can’t go see it, but it seems they do that kind of thing. Thank you for the meal. Maybe it’s because of the rocking, but I’m gradually losing my appetite. I don’t think I’m seasick yet. So, I’ll work on my computer until dinner time. It’s 5:30, but it’s getting dark outside. The sun is setting earlier. We’re now in Akita Prefecture. We ‘re a little above the Oga Peninsula in Akita Prefecture. Last orders are accepted until 7:30 PM, so I’ll go for dinner. It seems you can choose your menu using the touch panel. I’ll have the fried chicken set meal. I’m starting to get seasick, so I’ll go for the regular size. My fried chicken set meal has arrived. It was brought to me by a robot. This is a gourmet dish called “escalope,” a Nemuro specialty. This one is 1,400 yen, while the fried chicken set meal here is 1,200 yen. For some reason, my wife’s is 200 yen more expensive. lol , thanks. It’s really rocking. Thank you for the meal. I bought a “pineapple soda” from the vending machine. I was fine until dinner time, but I suddenly felt sick. The boat is rocking really hard. Maybe the waves are rough? I’ll lie down for a bit. I’m feeling better as I sleep on my back. Everyone else was drinking and having fun, so I’m not sure if they were taking motion sickness medication or if they’re resistant to seasickness, but I was envious. Good morning. I was feeling seasick, so I lay down and before I knew it, I was asleep. It’s now 1:56, and we’ll be arriving at Otaru Port soon. I’ve chilled some cheese herring roe. I’ll try some. It looks the same as cheese scallops. It’s become a tradition for me to buy this when I get on a boat. Delicious!! Super delicious!! Herring roe and cheese go perfectly together! It’s so delicious, I’ll eat it all up. I’m sure anyone who drinks will love this. So, we’ve arrived at Otaru Port, so we head to the car. It’s still pitch black outside. We’ve safely arrived in Hokkaido. It’s still early in the morning, so we’ll kill some time and then head out. What bird is this? What kind of bird is it? It keeps coming. It’s a good time, so we’ll head to our first destination. It’s about a 30-minute drive from Otaru. The roads around Otaru are incredibly rough. There are potholes… so we’ll head toward the mountain we can see in front of us. It’s called “Tenguyama.” We’ve reached the base of the mountain in no time. We’ll continue on the mountain path. It’s a fun climb from here. It’s about a 5-minute drive from the Otaru Station area, and we’re already in the forest. Unfortunately, there seems to be construction work about to start, and they said we could take the forest road if we were going to be back by noon, but we’re not sure if we’ll be back by then, so we brought our bikes and decided to ride them. This time, I’m heading to Anataki Falls. Normally, I can drive up to the gate 1.5km away, but today, construction is blocking the access, so I’ll cycle as far as I can. I was given this electric assist bicycle, so I’ll ride it to the waterfall. As those of you who know may know, this is an electric assist bicycle from ADO, a popular German brand with locations in over 200 cities worldwide, primarily in Europe. This is the Air Carbon electric assist bicycle. I’d like to introduce this bicycle to you. It features a durable carbon fiber frame, weighing just 14.5kg. This makes it easy to carry and store, and even if the power runs out, it’s still more nimble than a regular electric assist bicycle. The battery is built into the saddle and comes with a lock, which helps prevent theft. Removing the seat is easy: just remove the lock, unplug the cable, and pull out the saddle, just like a regular bicycle. The saddle acts as a battery, so you can charge it at home using the included charger, or even at your front door with the saddle plugged in. Charging takes 4 to 6 hours, giving you a maximum range of 100km. Since I don’t usually ride more than 100km, I don’t think I need to worry about charging. The brakes are hydraulic disc brakes, front and rear. It looks like this. The maximum load capacity is 120km, and the operating temperature is -10 to 50°C. The maximum climbing angle is 20°, so it can climb almost any hill. The great thing about this bike is that it uses a durable carbon belt instead of a chain. This means it can travel approximately 20,000 to 30,000km maintenance-free, which is extremely helpful for someone like me who hates to bother. Since it’s a belt, there’s no need to worry about chain oil staining your clothes. This light is incredibly bright, at 1200 lumens. If you don’t angle it downwards, it’s enough to dazzle the person in front of you. This is the monitor. It has “ECO mode” and “Sport mode,” each with three levels of adjustable assistance. This allows for a comfortable ride tailored to the conditions. It comes with a dedicated app that records your mileage and carbon dioxide emissions reductions. You can also use the app to turn the lights on and off and switch modes. What’s great about this bike is its GPS function . If the bike is stolen or falls over while parked, you’ll receive a notification through the app . Even if it is stolen, you can track its location using the GPS. I didn’t know bikes these days have this kind of functionality. I test-ridden it a few times, and since it was my first time riding an electric bike, I wasn’t surprised at how comfortable it was. I actually wanted to ride it on a smooth road, but that wouldn’t feel like my channel, so I decided to ride it on a forest road this time. Because this bike is made of carbon fiber, it doesn’t seem possible to attach a stand. This is the first time I’ve seen one like this, but it looks like this. It can be folded. No accessories other than the monitor are included. The air leak, juice holder, smartphone holder, and camera mount were all added by me, so they’re not included. With these installed, I look like a cycling or motorcycle YouTuber, which is incredibly cool. I’m a complete shape-first type. It looks really cool when you equip it with all these different things. The design is also really cool. It comes in several colors, but I really wanted this black, so I chose it. It’s an electric assist bicycle, but it’s foldable and super easy to fold. This time, I folded this bike and brought it in my car. Folding is super easy—just remove this and fold it. This part has a strong magnet, so when you line it up, it sticks together and doesn’t move easily. It’s easy to compact like this. You can remove the handlebars, or fold them up. I was about to leave, but heavy machinery arrived, so I’ll wait a little longer. There’s someone there, so I feel a little more at ease. I’m all set. I’ve got my bear spray, bear bell, and whistle, and I’m ready to go. I’m also trying to prevent ticks from getting in through the gaps in my shoes. Let’s get started. Thank you. I’m off. We’ve started . There’s construction work halfway up the road, so it’s safe and deserted. But beyond that is unknown territory. The road is bumpier than I expected, so the video may be shaky, so please bear with me. But the bike rides smoothly. Having the assist is great. I’m heading deeper into the mountains where brown bears live. I wonder what kind of scenery awaits me ahead. I’m entering their habitat, so I want to be fully aware of that before I enter. It seems like there will be car mirrors up ahead, but the local construction workers said that the area beyond that is really dangerous. So I really need to be careful. This is a gravel road, but I’m riding without any problems. I really don’t need any strength. The road starts to get a little hilly from here, but the brakes work well even on the gravel. I’m going a little too fast and I’m doing a wheelie, so I’ll set the assist mode to a low setting. Okay, that’s good. I’m riding in sport mode right now. This is my first time riding on this bumpy road, but so far it’s been going smoothly without any problems. I forgot to put on my bear bell, so I’ll put it on now. I’ll be careful to watch out for bear tracks and bear droppings as I go. It seems like there are actually a lot of bears in Otaru. A resident mentioned earlier that one was spotted in the town at the foot of this mountain the other day. It starts to get a bit uphill from here. Wow, that’s scary… It’s like this… It’s the great outdoors. A bear could appear at any moment. I’m getting nervous, and my palms are sweating. I think the road will soon fork in the road. There are 3.2km left until I can ride my bike. I have 3.2km left to go. From here on, bicycles, motorcycles, and buggies are not allowed. So, this is as far as I can go by bike. But I’m glad I made it this far. It’s 1.5km from the starting point, so even the round trip takes quite a while. It would be quite difficult on a normal bike, but with the bike assist, I was able to get here easily. From here, I left my bike and walked toward Anataki Falls. Anataki Falls is about a 3km walk from here. It’s super scary, but I’d like to go. I’m scared to leave my bike here, but I don’t think anyone will come. This bike has a GPS function, so if it’s stolen or falls over, the app will notify me immediately. I can find my bike’s location. I think it’s a really useful feature. As it says here, there’s a high chance of encountering brown bears, so I’ll be careful. I wonder how long it will take to walk 3km from here? The road is well maintained, so I feel a sense of security, but looking left and right, it’s truly natural, so it’s scary. It’s a gentle slope, but walking is still tiring. I can see the value of a bicycle. So far, there have been no bear footprints or bear droppings. As I venture deeper into the mountains, my unknown adventure begins. Catching my breath, I mutter to myself, “This is where it really begins.” Three kilometers is a long way. Walking it, I realize just how far it is. Incidentally, I’ve finally made it about one kilometer. Two-thirds of the way there. I’m so glad this isn’t a full-on hiking trail. The path is wide, so I can walk with complete peace of mind. In Japan, bears aren’t used to humans yet, but in Canada, they’re used to people, so these bear bells seem to serve as a signal to let people know where we are. That’s why they’re called “dinner bells” in Canada. It seems to be a metaphor for a bell that signals a meal. Apparently, if you wear a bear bell in Canada, the guide will tell you to take it off. I’m wearing granular wood vinegar on my backpack. I do wonder if it’s effective, though. It does smell really bad. There’s a squirrel. So cute. It’s looking at me. Is it in the picture? There’s a squirrel pretty close by. Its cheek pouches are stuffed with something. Perhaps nuts? Its cheeks are so puffy and adorable. The squirrel comforted me a little. It relieved my tension. But the worst thing you can do is not let your guard down, so I continue, expecting a bear to appear out of nowhere. If a bear emerges from the bushes while you’re walking, there’s nothing you can do even with bear spray. I’m already halfway there. The same path continues on. The footprints are bigger than my hand. These are Ezo deer. They’re very different from the deer in Nara. From here on, the path gradually becomes rougher. It’s a very dirt road. The sound of the river is getting louder from here. The bear bell might not be useful. I’ve been walking for nearly 30 minutes, but I’m only a few hundred meters away from Anataki Falls. Normally, if I arrived in Otaru at that time, I’d probably go to the morning market and eat a delicious seafood bowl, have soup curry or some other local delicacies for lunch, eat something delicious at dinner, and then see the Otaru Canal and do some other sightseeing. But what on earth was I doing, deep in the mountains, right after arriving in Hokkaido? Finally, I saw the sign. This way. The path was clearer than I expected. I thought we’d be going through more of a bushy area, but it seemed fine. From here, there seemed to be lacquer and other plants that can irritate the skin, so I decided to wear gloves. It’s 500 meters to Anataki Falls. It’s scary to walk 500 meters into the real mountains. Of course, there’s a sign (Beware of bears). So I’ll keep going. I’m not sure if it’s worth it, but I’ll blow my whistle. Is this okay? So, this is what I’m doing right now. Ah, I see. It seems like this is the kind of road I’ll be on. It doesn’t feel like many people have been here. 500m walk… It ‘s pretty tough… Huh? It’s a pond. Might be a swamp. If you get stuck, you might not be able to get out. The pond and the path are one, so you might get stuck by mistake. There’s a pond around here too. You have to be really careful or you’ll get stuck. It’d be scary if there was a bear. Hold on. It’s like a bottomless swamp. Oh no, a bear might come out… This isn’t good. I don’t know the way. Hold on. I’m not sure if this is the right way to use it, but I have a whistle, so I’ll blow it. I don’t recommend this. It’s quite a hard path. 500m on this path is brutal. Another swamp has appeared. Ah! No good! I’m sinking! Is this called a porcupine? Did it rain yesterday? Or is it because it’s cold in the mornings and evenings and there’s dew… There are deer footprints, but so far no bear footprints. The water is so clear. No… this is tough… I’ve gone a fair distance, so I blow my whistle again. It feels like I’m calling the bear, which I don’t like. But I feel like blowing the whistle might attract the bear. I think this is probably the path. But… I’m not sure which is the path. Is it this way or that way? At worst, I think I’ll reach it if I follow this river. Is this also a type of mushroom? I don’t know. I feel like I’ve gone about 500 meters already. Not many people come here, so the path is disappearing. So, where exactly am I? No matter how far I go, I’m in the forest. So far, I haven’t found any ticks or anything on my clothes. This might be my first time walking this deep into the mountains in Hokkaido. I wonder if there’s a path? I have no choice but to go as hard as I can. I don’t know what’s under my feet, so that’s a bit scary. I wonder if I’ll suddenly fall into a hole… It suddenly got cooler. It’s really chilly. I’ve come this far, but can I go back? I’m walking along what looks like a path, but there’s no pink tape or anything. Oh! Is that it? Is that it! Amazing! It must be that. I can see something that looks like a cave. More than an hour has passed since we started walking. Suddenly, a large cave appears near the peak of Tenguyama, which is 531 meters above sea level. There is no path from here, so the only option is to somehow climb up this stream. This is it. I think this is the waterfall. How am I going to get there? I enter carefully as there might be bears in this cave. It doesn’t look like there are any. There it is. I cautiously enter the large, hollowed-out tunnel. The cool air and the sound of the waterfall are the only sounds, enveloping the surroundings in a sacred atmosphere. Only those who have visited can truly understand this sensation. We proceed through the cave. We come upon the majestic Anataki waterfall , a waterfall that continues to flow unnoticed. It’s especially moving because it’s at the end of a rough road. This is truly a spectacular view of a hidden region . It’s a small waterfall, only about five meters high, but the location is more impressive than the waterfall itself. It ‘s absolutely amazing! There’s no drop or force of water, but it creates a mystical space. Wow, it’s amazing. The inside of the cave is like a river. We came right under the waterfall . Even though there isn’t a drop, it’s impressive to see it this close. We were there, but then we came to the other side. It looks like a cave all the way to the other side. So, this was a truly mystical waterfall. The path is very muddy, with many slippery spots, and the path is difficult to follow in some places, so please proceed at your own risk. The path is steep, but the waterfall is incredibly impressive. I wouldn’t recommend going alone . Now, let’s head back to the forest road gate. We’ll be careful as we head back, as we don’t know when a brown bear might appear. We’ll go back 500 meters along this path. After that, we’ll head back 2.5 kilometers along the forest road. We ‘ve safely escaped the rugged path. This alone will lessen our bear worries. We have another 2.5 kilometers to walk. It took about 15 minutes to return from the waterfall to the sign. So, I think it took about 20 minutes to get from the sign to the waterfall. We returned safely. It took about an hour and five minutes to walk leisurely from the waterfall to this gate. I don’t know if anyone else is going, but please use this as a reference. Now, let’s ride our bikes back to where we parked our car. *For some reason, there was no audio, but please note that mountain climbing is prohibited from October 1st to March 31st. Well, I’m heading back. It’s been a while since I last sat down. I wonder how long it’s been? I would normally have to walk 1.5 kilometers from here, but since I’m on my bike, it’s a relief. I’m back before I know it. It took less than five minutes. Even with the bed kit set up in my car, I was able to fit it under the bed like this, so it was compact and easy to bring. It was a truly epic adventure. I’m not sure if I’ll make it in time, but there’s one more place I want to go, so I’ll stop by there before ending my trip for today. Now, let’s head to our next destination. Our next destination is about 26km from here, a 30-minute drive, so I’m not sure if I’ll make it in time, but we’re heading to a place called Bannosawa Falls. We’re going up the mountain. The sun is setting. Is the building I see up ahead the accommodation called “Kiroro”? It looks like there’s a waterfall in front of it. We’ve arrived. This is the building called “Kiroro,” and the entrance to the waterfall is here. I think this is the landmark. Up ahead, there are stairs, though they’re collapsed, so I think the waterfall is up ahead. Let’s head there. I’m not sure if there are bears around here, but I brought a bear bell and bear spray just in case. It does feel like there might be bears, though. Can you see it in the photo? There are lots of white bugs flying around, and I was just told they’re “snow bugs.” When these snow bugs start flying, it seems like it’s about to snow. So I think it’ll start snowing around here soon. It’s only September 30th, but it feels like that season is already here. I can hear the sound of the river, but it’s quite low down. It’s going down from here. I think this is a waterfall that anyone can easily see. The river is just around the corner. The river flows very fast. A really big mushroom. It might be difficult to climb up. It’s easy to go down, though. The footing is a little rough from here. There are fallen trees and stuff. Instead, there’s a rope here, so I think it’ll be fine if I hold on to it. It’s getting dark, so I’m hurrying. Driving at night is dangerous, so I tried to avoid it as much as possible, but it looks like it’ll be dark by the time I get down the mountain. It’s amazing, this place is surrounded by cliffs. There it is. Wow! Amazing! Amazing! I’m so glad I came! A damp breeze brushes against my cheeks, and a cool, moist air wafts along with the scent of grass. The faint roar of the water from afar gradually grows louder. The force of the flowing river makes me imagine a waterfall hidden behind a hidden curtain. A thunderous 15-meter waterfall appears before Bannosawa Falls . The power of the waterfall’s splashes and the surrounding cliffs create a sense of grandeur. It’s amazing! You can go any further, but you’ll need boots or water shoes, otherwise your shoes will get wet. The feeling of being surrounded by these sheer cliffs accentuates the impact. Footsteps are very slippery around here, due to the moss and wetness . It only took about three minutes to walk there. So, this is what the surrounding area looks like. It’s nothing but nature. However, right next to it is a building called “Kiroro.” You wouldn’t expect a waterfall like this right next to a building, would you? Amazing… I wanted to take my time looking around, but the sun was setting, and I was afraid of walking on the mountain path once it got dark, so I turned back. It only took about three minutes. I really recommend this place, but the moss around here makes it slippery, so be careful. I’m back. The return trip was tough. It was getting dark, so I walked a little faster, but it took less than three minutes. On the way there, it might have taken about two minutes. The footing is pretty rough, but it’s a waterfall you can see right away. If you have the time, I recommend you come and see it. Anataki Falls was also really nice, but this one is easier and much more spectacular. If you’re looking for a fantastical waterfall, this one is the one to go to. If you want to see a mystical waterfall, Anataki Falls is recommended. The sun was setting like this. I managed to make it in time , but it was already pitch black in the forest. This time, I went to a scenic spot near Otaru. What did you think? It was an incredibly hard first day in Hokkaido. I’d like to continue my Hokkaido trip like this. The ADO electric assist bicycle I introduced this time is extremely comfortable to ride. It ‘s great for mountain roads and slopes like this, but it’s also recommended for commuting to work or school. I’ve included a link in the description, so please check it out. Now, I want to head down the mountain before it gets dark. So, I’ll drive safely down the mountain. There was a bear warning sign, and it seems like bears do appear here, so if you’re planning on going, I recommend taking some bear precautions. I wonder if there are deer around, as there are trucks driving through the middle. There seemed to be an observation deck, so I stopped by. It was so beautiful. It was so beautiful. It was so beautiful, but it was already dark. I’ll head home carefully.

The bike is rated to 50 Celsius? Who's going biking when it's that hot? 🙂
Hello from New York, you should have brought Ginger candies with you. They help with sea sickness, and nauseousness. I enjoyed this video very much.
Thank you for another wonderful video Watatabi-San. I am looking forward to enjoy more videos from you from Hokkaido.
Don't go to dangerous places too much ok.
But thank you for sharing with us the beautiful places, above all. 🙏
Thanks for sharing👍
Watabi's Hokkaido adventures always seem so dangerous lol, stay safe Watabi! but i'm very excited to see your adventures in Hokkaido.
uwaaahhh, Otaru is so GORGEOUS from above at the Observation Deck!
Thank you for overcoming difficulties and fears to make this beautiful video. I look forward to the next beautiful stages of your journey🥰
Thank you for another vivid adventure, that bike looks handy and the waterfall was lovely, very atmospheric so deep in nature. I look forward to seeing more of Hokkaido with you.
