Discover the breathtaking autumn foliage along the waterside in Okunikko, painted in autumn colors! Top 15 Best Autumn Scenery Spots Along the Water in Oku-Nikko! Konsei Pass ( early to mid October ) Konsei Pass is the main route leading to Oku-Nikko from the north. In general, the area between Iroha-zaka and Konsei Pass is called “Oku-Nikko”. You can look down on Mt. Nantai and Lake Yunoko from Konsei Pass. Lake Yunoko ( early to late October ) Lake Yunoko was formed when the Yugawa River was blocked by the eruption of Mt. Mitsudake. A view of Mt. Nantai can be seen from the northwest shore of Lake Yunoko. Mt.Nantai ( Top 100 Great Mountains of Japan ) A promenade has been built along the lakeshore, allowing visitors to walk around the lake. On the north shore of Lake Yunoko, there is a visitor center and Nikko Yumoto Hot Spring. It is known as a famous cloudy hot spring, and the hot water flows into Lake Yunoko. Walking to the north of Nikko Yumoto Onsen, you will find Onsen-ji Temple. Onsen-ji Temple is famous as a “temple where you can bathe in hot spring water,” a rarity in Japan. I walked to the south shore of Lake Yunoko through the promenade. The circumference of Lake Yunoko is about 3 km, and it takes about one hour to walk around the lake. From early to mid-October, the autumn leaves of the lakeside forest are magnificent. The Yunoko round-the-lake course is a recommended walking route in autumn. Lake Karikomi ( early to mid October ) Karikomi Lake is an unexplored lake that can be reached in about an hour’s walk from Lake Yunoko. It is connected to Kirikomi Lake, which is located further away. Like Lake Yunoko, it is a cesspool lake created by the eruption of Mt.Mitsudake. The crystal clear emerald green water and the autumn leaves are spectacular! A brown dipper is bathing in the lake. Lake Sugenuma ( early to mid October ) Sugenuma is a lake dammed by lava from Mt. Nikko Shiranesan. When the lake is full of water, it is 1,731 meters above sea level and has a shoreline of 6.5 km. Sugenuma boasts the highest transparency in Honshu at 13.2m. There are many activities available, such as canoeing and SUP. There is also a campground by the lake, so you can enjoy the outdoors to the fullest. Lake Marunuma ( early to mid October ) Marunuma is a lake formed by lava from Mt. Nikko Shiranesan. Surrounded by virgin forest, it has a mysterious atmosphere and is one of the clearest lakes in Japan. The autumn leaves that color the shores of the lake in autumn are also a sight to behold. Marunuma is a lake formed when the Otaki River was dammed by lava. It is 1.2 km from north to south, 500 m from east to west, and 1428 m above sea level when full of water. Rainbow trout and brown trout are released into the lake Lure and fly fishing are also available. Marunuma and Sugenuma are located just west of the Konsei Pass tunnel. It is recommended to stop by as a course for viewing the autumn leaves in Oku-Nikko. Yudaki Falls Yudaki is a 70-meter-high, 110-meter-long waterfall that spans the southern end of Lake Yunoko. The waterfall cascades down the rock wall of the Mt. Mitsudake lava flow that formed Lake Yunoko after the Yugawa River was stopped. You can look up at a panoramic view of Yutaki Falls as it flows down from the waterfall basin. You can climb up to the top of the Yudaki Falls on a well-maintained walking trail along the side of the falls. There is a viewing platform just south of Lake Yunoko where you can look down on the waterfall from above. The water that flows down becomes Yugawa River and flows to Senjogahara. Izumiyado Pond Izumiyado Pond is a pond made up of water from a spring in Senjo-gahara Located in the middle of Senjogahara Nature Study Path, it is a great resting spot! The view of clear water and fallen trees is impressive, and Mount Nantai is in the background! Water from Izumiyado Pond joins the Yugawa River and flows through Senjogahara Izumiyado Pond in late autumn is a little sad with the leaves falling. There is a junction toward Senjogahara and Odashirogahara near Izumiyado Pond. Koutoku Swamp Kotoku-numa is a small swamp located to the east of Senjogahara. There is a Koutoku Ranch next door and you can see horses and cattle. It is early autumn in Kotoku-numa. The water that flows through Kotoku-numa joins the Yugawa River at Senjogahara. Ryuzu-no-Taki (Dragon’s Head Waterfall) The Ryuzu Waterfall is a mountain stream waterfall that flows down from the Yugawa River as a rapid stream. The name comes from the fact that the waterfall basin looks like the head of a dragon. A viewing platform is set up on the side of the waterfall basin where you can see the waterfall from the front. Lake Chuzenji from Mt. Hangetsu Observatory Mt. Nantai Hatcho Dejima Peninsula Lake Chuzenji was formed by the eruption of Mt Nantai, which caused the valley to fill in. You can see Lake Chuzenji and Mount Nantai from Mt. Hangetsu At the end of the Chuzenji-ko Skyline, there is the Hangetsu parking lot. From there, a 15-minute walk will take you to the Hangetsuyama Observation Deck. Mt. Mt. Nikko Shiranesan Walking east along the lakeshore, you will reach Utagahama Beach. On the way, there is “Italian Embassy Villa Memorial Park“ You can visit the embassy villa built in 1928. You can enjoy walking in the autumn leaves while viewing Mt Nantai and Mt Nikko Shiranesan. Lake Chuzenji, Utagahama Beach Mt. Nikko Shiranesan Located on the eastern shore of Lake Chuzenji, Utagahama Beach has a large parking lot. Mt. Nantai and Nikko Shiranesan can be viewed over Lake Chuzenji. Chuzenji Temple (Tachiki Kannon) is located behind the Utagahama parking lot. Chuzenji Temple (Tachigi-Kannon) Chuzenji Temple is a Tendai sect temple located just behind Utagahama Beach. It was founded in 784 by Shodo Shonin, the founder of Nikko. It is also called “Tachiki Kannon” (meaning “Thousand-armed Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva”) as its principal deity. Lake Chuzenji is located at an altitude of 1269 meters and has a circumference of 25 kilometers with a maximum depth of 163 meters. A sightseeing boat operates from Utagahama beach, and you can enjoy the scenery from the boat. It is also a convenient base for trekking along the southern shore of Lake Chuzenji. The best time to see the autumn leaves along the shores of Lake Chuzenji is from late October to early November. Lake Chuzenji, Senjugahama Beach ( Oku-Nikko, Tochigi Prefecture ) Senjugahama is a quiet beach on the western shore of Lake Chuzenji. It is known as the best sunrise spot in Oku-Nikko. Mt. ① 金精峠
金精峠(こんせいとうげ)は、栃木県と群馬県の境界にある峠です。彼方にそびえる「男体山」と眼下に見える「湯ノ湖」、そして紅葉に染め上げられた森の景観の美しさにはため息が出ます。

② 湯ノ湖
湯ノ湖(ゆのこ)は、戦場ヶ原の北方に位置する湖で、標高1478mに位置し、湯ノ湖の北西岸から男体山が望めます。湖岸に遊歩道が整備されており、歩いて約1時間で一周できます。

③ 刈込湖・切込湖
刈込湖・切込湖(かりこみこ・きりこみこ)は、秘境ムード満点の湖です。金精道路の途中にある小さな駐車場から、山道を通って行きます。湖畔は原生林に囲まれており、静かでとても癒されます。

④ 菅沼
菅沼(すがぬま)は「日光白根山」の溶岩で堰止められてできた湖で、満水時の湖面の標高は1731m、湖岸線は約6.5kmです。菅沼の透明度は13.2mで、透明度は本州一を誇ります。カヌーやSUPなどアクティビティも充実しており、湖畔にはキャンプ場もあり、アウトドアを満喫できます。

⑤ 丸沼
丸沼(まるぬま)は「日光白根山」の溶岩によるせき止め湖で、原生林に囲まれた神秘的な雰囲気で、南北1.2km、東西500m、満水時の標高は1428mです。「ニジマス」や「ブラウンマス」が放流されており、ルアーやフライフィッシングも楽しめます。

⑥ 湯滝
湯滝(ゆだき)は、湯ノ湖のすぐ南の断崖にかかる滝です。百名瀑にしてもおかしくないほどの大迫力で、紅葉の名所でもあります。滝の東側に崖を登る道があり、滝の上下両方からの眺めを楽しめます。

⑦ 泉門池
泉門池は戦場ヶ原の北西端に位置する、湧水によってできた池で、戦場ヶ原自然研究路の途中にあり、休憩スポットにも最適です。泉門池の近くに、戦場ヶ原と小田代原へ向かう分岐点があります。

⑧ 光徳沼
光徳沼(こうとくぬま)は、逆川の上流にある周囲約300m、深さ約1mの小さな沼で、沼の中にヤチボウズという草が生えているのが特徴です。近くには光徳牧場もあり、牛や馬が放牧された牧歌的な風景を楽しめます。

⑨ 竜頭ノ滝
竜頭の滝(りゅうずのたき)は、湯川が急流となって流れ下る渓流瀑です。長大な滝ですが、水流が大岩で二分される滝壺付近の景観と、その紅葉美が有名です。

⑩ 半月山展望台
「中禅寺湖スカイライン」の終点に半月山駐車場があり、そこから約15分ほど歩いて登っていくと半月山展望台に至ります。中禅寺湖は、男体山の噴火で渓谷がせき止められてできた湖で、湖の南方にある半月山からは中禅寺湖と男体山を一望できます。

⑪ 中禅寺湖 南岸遊歩道
中禅寺湖の南岸には絶景の散策路があり、男体山や日光白根山を眺めつつ、紅葉散策を楽しめます。湖岸に沿って東へ歩いていくと、「歌ヶ浜」に至り、その途中には「イタリア大使館別荘記念公園」があります。

⑫ 中禅寺湖 歌ヶ浜
中禅寺湖の東岸に位置する「歌ヶ浜」には広い駐車場が整備され、中禅寺湖越しに「男体山」や「日光白根山」を展望できます。歌ヶ浜から遊覧船も運行しており、背後には中禅寺(立木観音)も鎮座します。

⑬ 中禅寺湖 千手ヶ浜
千手ヶ浜(せんじゅがはま)は、中禅寺湖の西の端にある、南北2キロにわたる浜で、一般車の乗り入れができず、徒歩か低公害バスや遊覧船でしか行けません。まさに奥日光の秘境の地ですが、そこから望む中禅寺湖と男体山の眺めも秀逸で、秋の湖畔の紅葉も定評があります。

⑭ 西ノ湖
西ノ湖(さいのこ)は、中禅寺湖から2kmほど西に位置する小さな湖で、低公害バスのバス停「西の湖入口」からは徒歩20分ほどで行けます。

⑮ 華厳ノ滝
華厳ノ滝は、奥日光・中禅寺湖の流出口にかかる滝で、「日本三大瀑布」の一つに数えられます。落差97mの断崖を豪快に流れ落ちる壮大な滝で、名瀑が多い日光周辺の中でも際立つ存在です。
