Rabbit Island Japan🐰 An Island with 500 Wild Rabbits— Where They Come to Greet You💕 Okunoshima. 大久野島

A healing trip with good food, hot springs, and beautiful views. Please enjoy till the end. 🐰 Good morning! Today I’m heading to Okunoshima, the Rabbit Island. 8:34 a.m. bus bound for Tadanoumi. Let’s go! 🐰 To reach the island, I’ll take a ferry from Tadanoumi. You can get there by train or bus. The bus ride takes about an hour and a half. It feels like driving through the sea. The island scenery is stunning. We’re almost at Tadanoumi Station. The bus fare is 1,600 yen one way. The bus stop was right in front of Tadanoumi Station. From the station, walk about 200 meters straight toward the port. When you see this sign, turn right toward the port. Here’s the ferry schedule. You can also buy rabbit goods and local specialties here. Let’s buy a ferry ticket. Tickets can be purchased from this machine. (Cash only.) The fare is 360 yen one way, 720 yen round trip. Rabbit food isn’t sold at convenience stores or on the island. Each bag costs 200 yen. I bought five for 1,000 yen. The ferry terminal, Tadanoumi Port, is right next to the ticket office. There are both large and small ferries. Today, I’m taking the small one. Alright, let’s board the ferry. I hand my ticket to the crew member. The ferry is pink. So cute! There are seats in the front and back of the ferry. This small ferry can carry up to 100 passengers. We’re setting sail. It takes about 15 minutes to reach the island. Okunoshima sits in the Seto Inland Sea, which has over 700 islands. Before I know it, we’re already there. Arrived! 🐰🚶‍♀️ Thank you! 👋 I just met my first rabbit! Hello there. Hold on a second. Another one came to see me! They’re running around so happily. While I was looking at a burrow, thinking it might be a rabbit nest… One came out to say hello. Hi there. You’re coming this way? A kind tourist next to me shared some lettuce. Lucky you! 🐰🥬 In front of the ferry terminal, there’s a big park. If you look closely, you’ll see rabbits everywhere. Here’s another one. I wonder if you’ll find any treasure there. You’re digging so hard. This one’s relaxing on a carpet of fallen leaves. That’s quite a spot to be in. This area was probably dug up by wild boars. The soil feels cool and cozy—perfect for a little hideout. Alright, let’s start walking toward the hotel. If you look carefully between the trees… There’s another one! Rabbits have very poor eyesight, around 0.05 to 0.1, but excellent hearing. Is it tasty? They’re so curious about the rabbit food I brought from home. Do you like this one better? Looks like you prefer this rabbit food. All-you-can-eat, huh? Each rabbit seems to have their own eating style. After eating, they go back to wherever they like. This one’s getting some food, too. Flop. Too cute. 🥺 As soon as they hear a sound, they come running over. It’s a bit dangerous here, so let’s move over there to eat. Feeding is not allowed near the road, since buses pass by on their way to the hotel. Alright, let’s have some rabbit food. Go ahead, together. Oh, you want to eat from that side? Since you’re alone here, you can take your time eating. Nap time. Rabbits sometimes jump out onto the road, so the buses always drive slowly. 🐰 The island’s circumference is about 4 kilometers. Two hours is enough to explore it at a relaxed pace. These are rabbit ear–shaped sound collectors. I wonder what kind of sounds I’ll hear. Sounds echo clearly here. Now I understand why rabbits are so sensitive to noise. So many paper cranes have been offered here. They come running from all directions. In no time, I’m completely surrounded. Hey, wait a minute! Looks like this group is really close to each other. Their little post-meal poses are just too cute. Were you hiding here? Some rabbits don’t come out right away—it depends on their territory or personality. Alright, let’s keep going. Relaxing right by the side of the road. When a rabbit lowers its head, it’s asking another rabbit to groom it. I saw that gesture many times today. Flop. Everyone’s spending such a peaceful afternoon. I’ve arrived in front of the hotel. Alright, everyone, let’s eat over here. Just a moment, okay? Even the rabbits in the back came running all at once. Looks like everyone’s really hungry today. They keep asking for more and more food. People nearby are so excited, too. 😊 More and more rabbits are gathering around. For the past two weeks, ferries couldn’t land on Okunoshima due to pier trouble. So eat up, everyone. The only hotel on the island. There are rabbits right in front of the hotel, too. 🐰 Cleaning those long ears—it’s part of their daily habit. You really like that leaf, don’t you? I’ll check in first and leave my luggage. A big rabbit statue welcomes me inside. There’s a café and a restaurant where you can enjoy light meals. It’s really nice for visitors who come just for a day trip. To check in, I fill out this form. I wrote down my name and the times I’d like for dinner and breakfast. Then I brought the form to the counter to check in. Since I booked the solo traveler plan, check-in and check-out are both at noon. They even gave me a free rental bicycle pass. My room for tonight is No. 402. The hotel has a total of 65 rooms. Let’s step inside. An eight-tatami Japanese-style room. Behind the paper sliding doors… There’s a table and two chairs. And the view from the room is… The Seto Inland Sea and a field where the rabbits live. There’s a toilet and a sink in the room. A refrigerator. And tea cups and glasses. For tea, I got a local specialty—tako senbei (octopus crackers). So good. 😋 A short break like this makes early check-in totally worth it. Let’s go explore in the afternoon. So cute! 💕 A fluffy white bunny. This area is closed because of bees. Here are the island’s rules. Don’t touch the rabbits, and don’t leave rabbit food behind, etc. Leftover food attracts rats, wild boars, and crows. I even saw wild boar droppings in the field, and someone told me they’d run into one in the mountains. 🐗 Scary! How’s the food, everyone? There are so many rabbits around the hotel, too. More and more are gathering around. Hold on a second. I’m glad I brought a big bag of rabbit food today. Whenever they spot me, they come running from everywhere. Too cute. They’re totally focused on the salad buffet. Watching them this close, I can’t even move. Would you like to try this one, too? Nope, not interested at all. Guess you definitely prefer that one. Back to exploring the island. That yawn—too adorable. Behind the hotel, there’s a path along the seaside. That’s the road—come this way, okay? I’m so happy you understood me. You like eating at your own pace, huh? Time for a little break. Hello there. There are so many rabbits along the seaside path, too. Let’s get their meal ready. They’re eating so nicely together. I wonder what kind of mushroom this is. 🍄 Some rabbits live just beyond the fence. Thank you, everyone. Some rabbits don’t appear on the way there, but show up on the way back. Alright, let’s feed them here. So you were hiding all along. I heard that rabbits also like to eat the roots of certain plants. Hope you find a tasty root. For some reason, the crows don’t scare the rabbits here. A white rabbit. That color’s pretty rare on this island. Would you like some food? Maybe it’s not your favorite kind. As evening comes, the temperature starts to drop. Even the rabbits that rested during the day are starting to move around. You’re really strong. The sunset over the islands is so beautiful. After this hour, only the overnight guests remain on the island. Are you okay? 😊 Fast asleep right in the middle of the lawn. Everyone’s having their own relaxing time. While I go for dinner, I’ll ask them to prepare the futon. Just place this card on the door and it’s done. Dinner is a Japanese and Western buffet—all you can eat. Smoked salmon. Amberjack and shrimp sashimi. Sea bream sashimi. Sushi and salad. There were many warm dishes, too. Here’s the live kitchen. Bishu-nabe—a local hot pot with sake. Hiroshima beef. Tempura. Sashimi, octopus rice, fried oysters, Hiroshima beef—I had so many delicious dishes. Soy sauce. All the sashimi was so fresh and tasty. The Hiroshima beef was amazing. Such a happy moment. For dessert, there was fruit, cream puffs, and ice cream. The famous Japanese jam brand Aohata actually has its headquarters here in Tadanoumi. Ice cream. I chose pear for dessert. That was such a lovely meal. Borrowing a flashlight for a night walk. Oh—it’s darker than I expected. The rabbits are lively at night, too. It’s nice and quiet here—you can eat peacefully. Let’s share this dish. Here you go. Hey, we met at lunch too, didn’t we? 😆 You all have such good appetites tonight. A baby rabbit. 🐰👶 Looks like you were hiding during the day because it wasn’t safe. You’re so tiny compared to your mom. Grow up safe and healthy, okay? Back in my room now. There’s a small note on the table… Following the hotel’s advice, I’ll leave the curtains slightly open tonight. Getting ready for the hot spring—yukata and towel prepared. There are four sizes of yukata to choose from. This one’s mine. Towel in hand… Let’s go. The hot spring is on the second floor. It’s a mildly radioactive radon spring, known for relieving fatigue and muscle pain. After walking around all day, it’s just what I need. Alright, here I go. That was such a wonderful bath. I’ll sleep well tonight. Good night. Good morning. I slept with the curtains slightly open, just as they advised. My body woke up naturally with the morning light. The rabbits are awake, too. So early! It’s only around 5:30 a.m., but there are already quite a few people in the field. 😳 I came down to the seaside for a morning walk. Alright, let’s go this way. More rabbits coming from over there, too. Here you go. That startled me! These three seem really close. I heard that rabbits usually live in groups, but they have a strong sense of territory. Jump kick! Good morning. Oh, you’re the one I met yesterday. Ah— It’s like they’re telling me, “Someone fell over!” Okay, let’s put it back. They even come to report when the food runs out. Alright everyone, you’ve eaten plenty—that’s it for now. The rabbits living on Okunoshima are domesticated rabbits. They make their nests by digging burrows in the ground. In the morning, I also saw some cute little birds taking a walk. It’s breakfast time. Since the restaurant seats were full, they kindly guided me to a tatami room. Simmered vegetables and grilled fish. Bread—croissants, French toast, and chocolate rolls. Setouchi’s local dishes. Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki. Steamed sweet potatoes. There were plenty of warm dishes, too. A drink bar. What should I try first? Fruit. Egg soup. Rye bread. Aohata jam. Orange and grapefruit infused water. I also had some curry and salad. Coffee and jam toast to finish the meal. 😋 Everything was delicious. With the solo traveler plan, I get to rent a bike and circle the island. Bikes available. Fill out this form. Then get the key and charger at the front desk. Checking the map they gave me. Let’s go explore the island by bike! Good morning. This looks like a gateball field. Each rabbit really has its own personality. They’re grooming each other again. Feeling satisfied now? So cute. Since more rabbits are gathering, I decided to walk and push the bike. They come close like this, but I’m not used to an electric bike—it makes me nervous. If you’re not used to riding one, a regular bike might be better. Nagaura Poison Gas Storage Ruins. The black marks inside the walls are traces from when they were burned with flamethrowers after the war. Good morning. A cute little roadblock. 🐰 Is that your home over there? Let’s try giving you some mizuna. Rabbits living closer to the mountains don’t seem very interested in vegetables. Oh, you took a bite! Or maybe not after all. North Battery Ruins. They’re running toward me from the other side of the tunnel. That’s amazing. You must’ve been hungry. Are you two friends? When I came over to move my bike… They came to tell me the food was all gone. You’re so smart. Here you go. These two live in a little spot like this. Thank you for the meal. See you again. Wow, what a beautiful view. The rabbits living in the mountains are a bit more timid. Would you like some food? Sorry. Rabbits actually drink a lot of water. Fresh water like this is provided by volunteers and visitors. Drop-off zone ahead. Here they come, running toward me. Sorry, I can’t park my bike here—please wait a second. I’ll go park the bike down below. Thanks for waiting. Such a funny little rabbit—like a tiny old man. Okunoshima, now famous as “Rabbit Island,” was once home to a poison gas factory that produced large amounts of chemical weapons. To conceal its operations, the Japanese Army left this area blank on maps, and Okunoshima became known as “the island erased from the map.” Over there, you can see the ferry terminal. I returned the bike key and charger to the front desk. Time to check out. Thank you for everything. The hotel also has a souvenir shop. Many guests were wearing the cute rabbit T-shirts. They also sell sweets and local sake. It’s almost time for the ferry. Rabbits usually give birth between spring and autumn, from around March to September. I often saw the males showing courtship behavior. Stay happy and healthy together. The rabbits near the hotel are resting in the shade—it’s too hot in the sun. And the ones in the forest, too. So you want to keep that all to yourself, huh? Take care, everyone. I’ll take the free shuttle bus to the ferry terminal. It only takes about five minutes. Fast asleep. 😴 In front of the ferry terminal, there are rest areas, toilets… Lockers… And vending machines. The return ferry has arrived. Thank you so much for watching until the end.
See you again in the next video. 🐈

This time, I visited Okunoshima — also known as Rabbit Island 🐇
Last time I went just for a day trip, but this time I stayed overnight at the island’s only hotel. A few weeks before my visit, the port had some trouble and the island was closed for about two weeks. Maybe that’s why the rabbits were extra excited — running up to me everywhere, asking for treats! Since I stayed the night, I could also spend time with them in the quiet hours — at night and early in the morning. Peaceful island moments, adorable rabbits, delicious food, and a relaxing hot spring — it was a truly healing trip.
Please enjoy! 🐇✨

  2. such a great video, i also almost fell asleep watching these cute rabbits. unfortunately i don't think i can go there, since i relaly want to pet them haha

  3. The Rabbit Island is so beautiful, and your video captured it so well! ❤ You were so well prepared with vegetables and pellets for the bunnies, and the plates to serve them!

It is hard to believe the bunnies were originally brought there for the gas factory experiments, but many decades later, they inherited the island. We have stayed in that hotel for two nights on our travels, too, very beautiful and comfortable! The evenings with all the rabbits socialising outside are so nice, but I put on 6 mosquito repeller patches! We also did not have plates and used a t-shirt to serve rabbit food on after we ended up scooping leftover pellets from the ground earlier. 😂😂😂 I took notes from your video and will visit more prepared next time!
