今回は山口県柳井市にあります白壁の町並みの紹介の後編です。
This is the second part of our introduction to the white-walled townscape of Yanai City, Yamaguchi Prefecture.

山口県柳井市は、伝統的な「白壁の町並み」や、柳井のシンボルである「金魚ちょうちん」で知らてます。
Yanai City in Yamaguchi Prefecture is known for its traditional “white-walled townscape” and its symbol, the “goldfish lantern.”

複合施設としての役割
Role as a complex facility
しらかべ学遊館は、民俗資料の展示をはじめ、柳井市青少年育成センター、柳井市子ども会育成連絡協議会事務局の機能も兼ね備え、子どもたちが安心して学習できる環境づくりに配慮した複合施設となります。
Shirakabe Gakuyukan will be a complex facility that will exhibit folklore materials, as well as function as the Yanai City Youth Development Center and the Yanai City Children’s Association Development Liaison Council Secretariat, and will be designed to create an environment where children can learn in peace.
建物と町並みについて
About the buildings and townscape
「柳井市古市金屋伝統的建造物群保存地区」内の西側に位置し、建物は江戸時代後期から明治時代初期の頃に建築されたと推定される白壁土蔵造りです。明治時代後期から油、呉服、繊維卸などの商家として、白壁の町並みに繁栄をもたらしました。
Located on the west side of the Yanai City Furuichi Kanaya Traditional Buildings Preservation District, the building is a white-walled storehouse-style building that is believed to have been constructed between the late Edo period and the early Meiji period. From the late Meiji period onwards, it brought prosperity to the white-walled townscape as a merchant dealing in oil, kimono, and textile wholesale.
開館の経緯
History of the museum’s opening
柳井市教育委員会では、20年来多くの市民の方々から民俗資料の提供を受け、これを保管してきました。かねてから展示活用の場を模索していましたが、平成13年度に所有者からこの歴史的な建物を譲り受け、平成14・15年度の2か年をかけて改修し、「しらかべ学遊館」として新たに生まれ変わることになりました。
The Yanai City Board of Education has been storing folk materials donated by many citizens for the past 20 years. The Board had been searching for a place to display these materials for some time, and in 2001, it acquired this historic building from its owner. It underwent two years of renovations in 2002 and 2003, and was reborn as the Shirakabe Gakuyukan.
