Rove & Drive In Okinawa ]

In this channel, we will introduce you while driving and walking around the famous places and historic sites of Okinawa that are not often introduced in the guidebook. If you watch this video and find it interesting or useful, please like it or subscribe to our channel. Nakagusuku Bay, located on the east coast of south-central Okinawa’s main island, covers a vast area of approximately 24,000 hectares, stretching from Katsuren Peninsula in the north to Cape Chinen in the south, and encompassing Tsuken Island and Kudaka Island within the bay. Within Nakagusuku Bay, the Nishihara-Yonabaru district once thrived as a key hub for sea and land transportation on the east coast, with a light railway running between the bay and Naha. However, with changing times, the Nishihara-Yonabaru district is losing its role as a transportation hub, and efforts are being made to revitalize it by reclaiming the waterfront and creating a new town. Within the Nishihara-Yonabaru district, Itarashiki in Yonabaru Town still retains the appearance of an old coastline, with the Itarashiki Coastal Line running along the coast. This road has been nicknamed “Tidanuna Road,” which means “Garden of the Sun,” and, as its name suggests, it is a place where you can watch the sunrise. Yonabaru Town also has a footpath suitable for cycling and strolling along the Itarashiki coastline, from the opposite bank of Udonyama to Tozoe Fishing Port. I took a stroll along the walking path from Usachi Ryugu Shrine to Itarashiki Multipurpose Square. 1st, let’s visit Usachi Ryugu Shrine (Yonabaru Ryugu Shrine). Google Maps lists it as Yonabaru Ryugu Shrine, but the stone monument reads “Usachi Ryugu Shrine.” Usachi Ryugu Shrine was formerly located on a large rock on the Chinen High School grounds and was affectionately known in the area as “Urashima Taro’s Grave.” It was relocated to the seawall adjacent to the school grounds in 1976, and later moved to its current location after passing through Tacchu Rock (Tacchu, Triangular Rock) and other rocks on the coast. Yonabaru Town is the smallest municipality on Okinawa Island. Yonabaru once sat on an inlet with an exceptionally quiet stretch of white sandy beach. As a result, from the Ryukyu Kingdom period through to the Meiji period, it was a hub for eastern maritime transportation, with Yanbaru ships passing through. During the Taisho period, a light railway opened between Naha and Yonabaru, becoming a major industrial and economic artery connecting southeastern Shimajiri County and the Nakagami region. However, as times changed, transportation methods changed, and the area lost its former vitality. For this reason, Yonabaru Town is working with Nishihara Town, Okinawa Prefecture, to reclaim land along the coast as part of the Nakagusuku Bay Port Marine Town Project, and is promoting the development of a new town. The opposite shore is the new town created by reclaiming land as part of the Nakagusuku Bay Port Marine Town Project. In several places along the walking path, there are stairs that lead down to the water’s edge. The day I shot the video was a spring tide, and it was close to low tide, so the tide was quite low. However, due to the typhoon, the wind was very strong and the sea was rough. On the right is Itarashiki Multipurpose Plaza. There are also car parking spaces available. Yonabaru Town is also famous for the Yonabaru Great Tug-of-War, one of Okinawa Prefecture’s 3 major tug-of-war events, alongside Naha and Itoman. The Yonabaru Great Tug-of-War is said to date back to the reign of King Sho Ei in the 1500s, and boasts a history of over 450 years. Within Yonabaru Town, Itarashiki is a place where the coastline scenery remains unchanged from the past. You can see the Chinen Peninsula in the background on the right. Thank you for watching until the end. 🙇 Please look forward to the next episode!
