Today is another roadside station series! This time we will visit the Kiso Roadside Station Block I’m still in Ina City right now I’m thinking of going to the Kiso area now Before that, I found a shop in Ina that caught my eye so I’ll go and check it out At a place called Cafe Restaurant Alhambra Isn’t it amazing that the company has been in business for over 60 years? 60 years in business is amazing There’s a shop called Just had dinner there It’s already evening After dinner, I continued down the Ina Valley From around Hirugami Onsen to Minami Kiso Maybe I’ll go around the Kiso area from there tomorrow That’s the schedule There are only about seven Kiso blocks The store I think I’ll probably be able to get around soon Is it still available? Nice restaurant Let’s go! Awesome!! A great retro feel The atmosphere is amazing If you really said it was 60 years, I’d say that’s true Time Slip Today I am this Beef steak with black curry salad (1,700 yen) I was also interested in this soft shell This also looks quite delicious There is Where to eat in Japan Is it cream croquettes? Crab cream croquettes set meal (1,000 yen) There’s a huge menu, it’s amazing There’s everything They even have soba udon and kama I thought there was no ramen, but they even had soba and udon There’s also an ala carte option There are so many other drinks too They also serve breakfast 800 yen, 950 yen until 11:00 This beef curry looks delicious! Amazing! Beef steak curry? Black curry looks delicious! I’ll enjoy having this Great spice delicious!! The meat looks delicious too delicious A really good steak tasty!! The meat is cooked to perfection Right? It’s a little rare The curry rice is a little yellow in color, like saffron rice This is only 1000 yen, right? Amazing!! It even comes with miso soup Thank you~ Crab cream croquette It’s crispy! Wow, looks delicious! Wow, that’s great!! That’s always my menu Ahh, it’s delicious, no doubt about it It’s super delicious Please try this steak too Of course I will The curry has quite an adult taste It’s so delicious It says 1964 The atmosphere inside is even more amazing than outside Wow, that was delicious It was delicious What’s the atmosphere inside? It’s quite Showa retro though The Showa retro feel may have been the best ever It’s old, but it doesn’t have that old-fashioned feel to it, it has a really antique feel to it It feels like a time slip It was a good shop The menu is also amazing I didn’t know there was a soft shell You can eat anything There’s a great variety of menu items That curry was also really tasty The crab cream croquette was also delicious I found a great place~ There’s also breakfast Also a little morning I want to go to a cafe later Oh, thank goodness I was thinking of heading down towards Hirugami, but it was quite a long way from there to Kiso Continue through the Gonbei Tunnel and enter the Kisoji Road First, go down to the south I think I’ll head north from the south tomorrow That’s the schedule So first, let’s go to Kisoji and take a bath in the hot springs Once you pass through the Gonbei Tunnel, you’ll be in Kiso This is good It’s free to go Amazing Road If it weren’t for this Going around Shiojiri That would mean going around Achi Village below, right? It’s quite far away Shiojiri is still better, but around here Gonbei Tunnel 4470m!! It came out~ The altitude is 1,160m The entrance was 1,000m so we went up over 100m It’s gone up quite a bit If you want to get to Narai-juku from here, instead of going straight, go to the right here and you’ll be able to get to Narai-juku It says But you go without knowing If you go straight, you’ll reach Route 19 It appeared in issue 19 There’s a roadside station on the right too Towards Narai-juku First, go down I’ll come from the south Shall we go to the hot springs first? Let’s go There are hot springs here where you can use the Monomiyusan Tegata, so I wonder if there are a few? I’ll look into it later, but I often go to Nihongi no Yu Just inside This is a carbonated spring It’s very good hot water There is no open-air bath, but the water is really nice It gets so warm in the winter Let’s go It’s about 15km from this intersection It’ll be soon Turn right here I’m heading towards Kaida Plateau Wow, it’s crowded It’s so crowded I’ve never been here before You can’t get in with a Monomiyusan pass I just pass by Now it’s 1km It went deep inside like this We have arrived! Wow, that felt good! It felt great! This place is really carbonated It’s all over my hands, isn’t it more like Ramune than Ramune? More like Ramune than Ramune? lol Ramune Onsen Is that place in Kyushu amazing too? This is a carbonated spring and it’s a bit cloudy Brown iron spring color It’s so good If there was an open-air bath, I’d have nothing to say It’s a pleasant hot spring I often come here in winter, but after skiing Nice ~ this time of year too So you can drop by on your way back from Mt. Ontake Since I came all the way down to the bottom of the Kiso Road, I thought I had to go to the post town Did you go to Tsumagojuku before? The atmosphere at night was really good I’ve never been to Magome-juku at night I’m heading to Magome-juku now It’s already 7 o’clock and it’s pretty dark Isn’t it quiet now? Let’s take a walk Tomorrow we will start from the south side of the Kiso area and head north Let’s do that~ Shall we go from above? There’s plenty of parking upstairs It’s pitch black There aren’t many street lights It’s so dark What about the street? The street is probably lit up I hope the lights are on to create a nice atmosphere Because it’s an area where people live Maybe it’s not lit up What about on the slope? It’s around here A little further ahead Let’s go Amazing, the sound of frogs croaking It’s a big chorus Wow, it’s pitch black It’s not lit up I’m at the bottom Came down Extremely quiet Wow, that’s amazing! It was surprisingly quiet And there were a ton of foreigners There were a lot There were some people at the inn and some walking around outside All six or seven people I passed were foreigners There were a lot There weren’t many Japanese people Apparently popular with foreigners I’d love to stay there! With this kind of atmosphere I want to stay there too It’s so quiet I was surprised good morning Now it is Tsumago-juku Today in the Roadside Station series I’m heading to Okusa Roadside Station now It’s about 20 minutes from here Today we will pass through Tsumago-juku Tsumago-juku is nice too though The atmosphere is amazing Inside, the house is quite old There aren’t that many shops There’s a bit of quietness It’s a pretty beautiful place The building is amazing The visible building It’s even more amazing when you go inside The night is also amazing However, unlike Magome-juku, parking fees are charged flat rate There are lots of free places in Magome-juku Well, it can’t be helped There are a total of seven Kiso blocks this time The northernmost station is Kiso Narakawa We are now heading to Okusa Roadside Station There are mostly roadside stations along Route 19 There is only one roadside station called Mitake I feel like I’m just a little bit inside Other than that, it’s mostly along Route 19 Today’s road is easy Just go straight from north to south or south to north It’s Kiso First of all, the climate is different from an altitude of about 400m It’s about 400m to 900m More than 90% of the land is covered by forests Because the valley is quite deep There seems to be less sunshine overall It’s a cold area in winter Due to its location, I think it’s a road that is often taken when traveling on local roads from Nakatsugawa to Matsumoto It is a relatively easy area to get to from the Chukyo and Kansai areas It’s quite far from the Kanto region Because it goes around It will be an area called What about tourist spots along the Kisoji? I’m sure there are plenty First, the post town That’s true after all There are many post towns along the Nakasendo road All three of Japan’s greatest post towns are located around here: Narai-juku, Tsumago-juku, and Magome-juku Only Magome-juku is in Gifu prefecture The other few post towns are all located on the Nagano side In addition to the famous Is it the place where Mitsuno-juku used to be? Nojiri-juku, Agematsu-juku, Fukushima-juku, etc There are so many different kinds We’ve been to Agematsu-juku and Fukushima-juku, but they’re smaller than Magome-juku and the like There are some places where traces of the past remain It has a great atmosphere It has a very Japanese old-fashioned atmosphere Also, the post towns around here get really crowded during the day It’s very quiet at night and early in the morning Because the atmosphere is so good Well, early morning is good Around 9 o’clock Then a lot of tourist buses come and it gets crowded If you go by about 9 o’clock The atmosphere is great and quiet, highly recommended Other tourist spots around here include There are lots of them and nature is abundant First of all, Kaida Plateau This is a pleasant place where you can grow delicious highland vegetables and corn, and there’s even a soft serve ice cream shop And then there’s Atera Valley The water is so clear and it’s very popular in the summer Many people come to swim in the river I wonder if there are restrictions on private cars on that road during the summer People going to campsites No one without special permission is allowed in You can’t get there by car, so you have to take the bus, walk, or bike Anyway, it’s beautiful, beautiful Kakizore Valley is also nearby and is a very beautiful place Even now, the Kiso River flows all the way across here Along this road is a little place called Nezame no Toko What do you call it? There are big rocks lined up like this There are some places with interesting scenery I also recommend visiting some places along this road Also, you can go to Mount Ontake from this road There used to be several ski resorts on Mt Ontake, but I guess there’s only one left now Maybe it ended up in two places? There’s a feeling that maybe we’ll do it again next year Well, the altitude is so high Snow is nice It’s at an altitude of nearly 2000m When there are no road closures, you can drive up to an altitude of about 2000m Ontake Mountain I wonder how far I can go Once you get there, it’s a really pleasant place I think it’s especially refreshing and great in the summer There is also Akazawa Natural Recreational Forest The forest is deep In an area where Kiso cypress trees grow in abundance Forest bathing and hiking are also pleasant There is a railway called Akazawa Forest Railway Apparently in the past, locomotives were used to cut Kiso cypress and send it out onto this No. 19 Now it is used for tourism You can enjoy forest bathing by riding just over 1km one way This is especially beautiful in the fall We haven’t been back in the fall I went on a little hike in the spring and it was really nice Atera Valley and Kakizore Valley are famous But there are also many beautiful rivers flowing around Akazawa Natural Recreational Forest here It’s a really nice place and there are lots of fish Summer might be good too The rest is around here Maybe fishing would be good too You can only do this in the lower part of this recreational forest, but the upper part is a no-fishing zone You should be able to fish at the bottom if you buy a one-day fishing pass There are quite a lot of people fishing Speaking of Kiso’s specialties, Sunki is undoubtedly one of them A salt-free fermented food made by lactic acid fermentation of red beet leaves It’s a pickle, but it’s fermented a little differently There is a slight sourness It’s very unique though Once you eat it, you’ll be addicted It’s so delicious Especially soba noodles with sunki Sunki soba is a great match Soba noodles and the sourness of Sunki In winter It’s more of a festival or event campaign like the Sunki Soba Festival There are campaigns in some places where you can get a stamp after eating there There are events like that It’s a food that’s rooted in this area And then there’s gohei mochi Gohei mochi is also famous around here That’s right, go a little further here Near the bed where I wake up There was a gohei mochi shop that was set up at the summit If you go in here on the left Atera Valley Another famous item is Hobamaki When you go to Gifu or somewhere like that, you can find Hoba-yaki I think it would be eaten with miso and Hida beef I used that magnolia wood Hobamaki is a local specialty around here It’s a manju So it reminds me of something like the sasa dango that is served in Niigata That is also a local specialty I ate it when I went to Mae-Utaki and it was really delicious And then there’s the corn from Kaida Plateau It’s very sweet They sell corn soup in a lot of places This is also a popular specialty This is Nojiri-juku I want to go in somewhere for a bit Old Nakasendo Road The trees around here are Kiso cypress The forest is deep That’s why lacquerware is also famous, Kiso lacquerware There is a Kiso Lacquerware Festival in spring and autumn I’ve been there before Me too, about 10 years ago I think in the past they did it for about three days, but now the number of days has been reduced a bit If you go on the last day or something It’s not a bargain sale It’s like a bargain sale You can buy really good things at low prices But it is proper lacquerware after all There are also things like “No dishwasher safe” It’s difficult to use in today’s life, though It’s amazing to go there after all Coffee cups and such It’s so stylish Recently, Maruyoshi Kosaka Lacquerware There’s some really stylish lacquerware A stylish restaurant If you go to a fashionable select shop, you will often see Nagano Prefecture on display or using their tableware You can eat food using that glassware I thought it was amazing and stylish, and when I looked at it, I wondered if it was from this lacquerware shop Anyway, it’s stylish If you’re looking for a place with a Japanese feel, with stylish wine glasses, this is the place for you That’s how stylish it is Isn’t it popular recently? Or has it been popular for a long time? It’s like lacquerware arranged in a modern style As we were talking, we arrived at Okusa Roadside Station Let’s go Let’s buy something at each roadside station today But today there are seven Isn’t it okay to eat a lot? Let’s go now – it’s over there Roadside Station Okusa This time it’s limited to Nagano Prefecture, but there’s one just south of here too There are also several in Gifu Prefecture Still, it’s wild vegetables! Koshiabura There’s also oily butterbur and butterbur shoots from Okusa It kind of looks like a Hachiku Isn’t Hachiku supposed to have less bitterness? A bakery! That’s great! Isn’t apple pie good? There are lots Basil Sausage Bread baked the day before is cheaper There’s also a restaurant It starts at 9:30 First time seeing it A 1.8L bottle of honey! This is amazing This is honey from Okusa Traditional rich honey is rare Okusa donuts It looks delicious Contains leaf powder? Mulberry leaves lol What is mulberry leaf powder? I didn’t see any mulberry leaf powder There are so many! Kiso Nezuko Geta This is a Kiso Sawara rice container There’s a restaurant called Kiraku here too Will it open from noon? It’s a butcher shop Kiso beef There is also a fried char set meal Grilled salted trout set meal for 900 yen The size is quite different Let’s go with this one This is it Now let’s move on to the next The next one is about 20km away Kiso Fukushima Roadside Station This time it’s the Kiso block From the north, Kiso Narakawa Roadside Station Next is Roadside Station Narai Kiso Bridge Roadside Station Kisomura, the village of the source of the Kiso River Roadside Station Hiyoshi Kisokoma Highlands Roadside Station Mitake Kiso Fukushima Roadside Station This is Okusa Roadside Station It will be these seven places There are a total of 69 post towns along the Nakasendo road 11 of them are They seem to be gathering at this Kisoji road And compared to other areas, there aren’t that many restaurants in Kisoji But there are some good restaurants Yakiniku Gonbei is good too It’s a little north after you exit the Gonbei Tunnel Grill your own yakiniku It’s along the road so you can get there quickly I recommend it It feels like a drive-in My recommendation is that there are quite a few restaurants in Kiso Fukushima Among them is a Japanese restaurant called Kanechi Fujiya There’s a drink called Shichiwarai I think that’s the one that’s being done The Japanese food there is really delicious Everything is delicious, even the small dishes The dishes are also beautiful There are many kinds Because there are a lot of little things That’s nice Healthy Meals So I wouldn’t say that yakiniku is unhealthy Well, yakiniku is yakiniku, so it’s different There’s a lot of yakiniku in Nagano Walking around this post town You want to be a little healthier, right? At times like that, I go over there You won’t get healthy in a day It’s a dish that suits a post town The atmosphere And then, as I was saying a little while ago, Nezame no Toko Dining Room Nakamura Shokudo’s Gohei Mochi You can eat it in the shop So I recommend it There are a few other restaurants I’d like to introduce I’ll just show you the places I’ve been to These are post towns on the Kiso Road, and there are 11 of them, from the north to the south: Niekawa-juku Narai-juku, Yabuhara-juku, Miyanokoshi-juku, Fukushima-juku The order is Agematsu-juku, Suhara-juku, Nojiri-juku, Mitsuno-juku, Tsumago-juku, and Magome-juku There are so many! If I were driving on this road, The sign is up I think each one has its own atmosphere I’m not sure if all the buildings are still there, but that’s the way it is You’ll find out on the road I feel like this is not how it was It’s not a straight line The old road that seems to be curved That’s good That’s the upper part of Narai-juku Near Kiso Narakawa Roadside Station It was Hirasawa village There’s a similar atmosphere around here It was the same at the current Okusa Roadside Station There was a restaurant that was open from 9:30 I was the type who bought meal tickets There was English written next to it too I think this area has the most foreigners in Nagano Prefecture There are many places like Hakuba and Nozawa Onsen There are so many foreigners But just because they come in droves during ski season During the summer, people go back to their home countries and there aren’t that many tourists But here on the Kisoji road, there are a lot of foreigners There is a walking path from Tsumago to Magome It feels so good there It’s a walkable route When we went Even though it was about three years ago I think the ratio of foreigners was about 90% It’s a weekday though Yesterday in Magome-juku, there were several foreigners walking around outside I could see them eating inside Everyone there was a foreigner Anyway, there are a lot of foreigners I think it’s probably a lot all year round Around here Because I can walk I can walk It’s rare to find a post town like that A place with atmosphere There are a lot of foreigners who like that sort of thing That’s why Even small restaurants have English menus I think there are a lot of foreigners There’s a walking path in Europe Santiago de Compostela It’s a similar feeling There is a man walking through the post town There are quite a lot of them Everyone is carrying a big backpack I don’t have any seashells though But along with that Is it a hostel? There is also a guest house In this mountainous countryside of Japan At first glance, you might wonder why there are so many English menus, but there really are It’s rare It’s a traditional restaurant with that kind of atmosphere and has an English menu That’s amazing It’s an amazing and interesting area The Japanese haven’t noticed yet It seems like foreigners have discovered the charm of this place first That’s what it feels like Of course, Sanshukuba Town is popular, even in Japan But other than that There are so many There are a lot of people walking along Route 19 I don’t know how they got the information from there, but it’s like the Akazawa Forest Railway that I mentioned a little while ago It was Sunday and about half the people were foreigners That’s amazing The guide too Talking to foreigners using a mobile phone translator In Nagano Prefecture They’re accepting so many foreign tourists I think that area is quite rare Whether it’s Hakuba or Nozawa, winter comes in droves Most of the people serving there are foreigners I think there are many places in Japan where foreigners open stores and cater to foreigners, but that’s not the case here The local people While creating an English menu, It’s amazing because it’s a place that welcomes you So maybe this is one of those areas in Nagano Prefecture Pilgrims from Shikoku It’s also popular with French people And the Kumano Kodo trails Maybe it’s similar to that Now we are almost at Nezame no Toko Since I’m here, I think I’ll eat some gohei mochi Today there are seven It’ll be fine I bought it at the Okusa roadside station Apple pie is a 3 o’clock snack Where is it? It’s a little further ahead A little further ahead The parking lot was here Let’s go Wow, that’s amazing! Did you get some pickles? Today I have three Gohei mochi (240 yen each) I thought I’d come all the way there and only get one Wasn’t it big? This one is flat Thank you~ Deep pickled looks delicious There are so many other things here Set meal with gohei mochi and soba noodles It’s here~ Wow~ it looks delicious!! I’ll enjoy having this delicious!! It’s so delicious! It’s super delicious The slightly burnt taste and sweet sauce are outstanding!! It looks like mochi It’s delicious – it still tastes like rice delicious Wow, it was delicious! There was another group here too Foreigners Isn’t it amazing? There are foreigners in a restaurant with this kind of atmosphere That’s amazing It’s like, how did you get here? Now it’s Agematsu If you go into this on the left It’s in Akasawa Natural Recreation Forest Kiso Fukushima Roadside Station is just around the corner It’s about 3km away I wish I had seen Nezame no Toko as well It’s along the road The altitude is now 700m 500m left I’m pretty sure they have a breakfast buffet on Saturdays and Sundays here I came here a long time ago I think I came here when I went skiing at Ontake about 10 years ago, and I remember eating it then Did I eat it? Or was I wrong? I kinda forgot You can see Mt. Ontake breakfast Even starting at 7am on Saturdays and Sundays would be nice I can’t see today unfortunately Looks delicious! They sell a lot of apples There are a particularly large number of wild vegetables here! There’s a huge amount here They sell Sunki What is this? It’s nice Lactic acid bacteria fermented vegetables There’s no salt in it That’s amazing If you buy this, you can make sunki soba I packed up the marinade for sunki That means no salt The restaurant is also popular It’s so crowded Chicken Tendon 1,200 yen Looks delicious Sauce cutlet bowl 1,100 yen The restaurant and vegetables and other fresh produce are on the right side This side is for souvenirs Let’s go Here we are There is Kaida Plateau It’s Mt. Ontake after all Kaida Plateau Yogurt That’s stylish! Even monkey pear juice I’m curious about this Sunky Drink This is great! Food to go with your meal The alcohol around here Seven Smiles I’ll also watch this Nakanori-san Here it is! Sunky Drink (290 yen)
