First Torii, Takara Shrine, Second Torii, Third Torii, Iwashimizu Hachimangu Shrine, located on Mount Otokoyama in Yawata City, Kyoto Prefecture, is one of Japan’s most ancient shrines, founded by imperial order of Emperor Seiwa in the early Heian period. Renowned as a “two-shrine mausoleum” alongside Ise Grand Shrine, it has attracted national faith and been deeply revered by successive emperors and samurai as a god protecting the nation. Samurai, including the Genji clan, are known to have prayed there for victory in battle, and the shrine has played a major role at turning points in Japanese history. The grounds include a magnificent main hall, built in the unique Hachiman-zukuri style of shrine building, now designated a National Treasure. The worship hall, as seen from the approach, is angled rather than frontal, which is said to prevent worshippers from facing the deity when leaving. The only chrysanthemum crest, the hollyhock, can be seen on the backside . The majestic appearance of the worship hall impresses visitors, while also emanating a certain elegance and mystical atmosphere.
