Kikuya is a long-established ryokan with a 400-year history, from the Meiji to Heisei era. Many famous guests have stayed here since its founding. Even the Japanese novelist Natsume Soseki once spent time here. Much of its original charm from those days remains intact. This video will take you through a relaxing stay at this historic ryokan. Sharing it with friends who want to experience Shuzenji Onsen. Come join me on this journey filled with a sense of history! I stayed in the annex called “Mizu no Kataribe” (The Storyteller of Water). You have to cross a suspension bridge to reach it. The gate to the bridge is locked and only accessible to staying guests. Walking through the long, historic corridor— Heading to the basement level. Passing by the Kiku Bath large public bathhouse. You need to unlock the gate before entering the bridge. We stayed in room 103, located at the very end. You can hear the sound of the Katsura River flowing nearby. Each room in the annex comes with a private hot spring bath. The room features Japanese-style bedding and tatami flooring. There’s also a free drink service in the common area (14:00–21:30). Japanese-style room: 12 tatami mats + semi-open-air hot spring bath. Bed size: 100 cm x 200 cm, 2 beds. All rooms face the Katsura River. Cozy, traditional Japanese atmosphere. Closet and safety box. Bath towels. Tea set with tea leaves and coffee to choose from. The fridge includes jelly desserts and mineral water. Near the entrance are the bathroom and the hot spring. Press the button and the hot spring water fills automatically. All amenities are fully prepared. Cute wooden mouthwash cups. Separate toilet. The bathroom is right outside. Enjoy bathing in the semi-open-air hot spring tub. The drink bar has my favorite apple juice. Free sweets are available before 6 p.m. Open 24 hours a day. You can enjoy cold drinks and coffee anytime. Let’s take a walk around the souvenir shop inside the ryokan. Business hours: 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. There aren’t many shops along the hot spring street, so you can buy Izu specialties here. You can choose yukata robes in different sizes. Private open-air baths are available when unoccupied. There’s also a large open-air public bath. From 6:00 to 6:30 p.m., they serve oden (Japanese hot pot). Beef skewers, radish, and fish cakes. We chose the 7:45 p.m. dinner time slot. Enjoying kaiseki cuisine in a semi-open dining space. Appetizers. You can choose your preferred set meal and type of rice or noodles. (Today I learned the most important thing — how to take a taxi!) Sakura shrimp tempura. The must-try stewed beef — their most popular dish! Set B: Sakura shrimp rice. Set C: Warm soba noodles. Finishing the meal with dessert. From 10:00 to 11:00 p.m., they even serve late-night ramen. Soy sauce ramen. Good night. Morning view from the suspension bridge. Breakfast options include Japanese or Western style. We chose the Western set. So hearty and delicious. Relax and enjoy breakfast with a garden view. Highly recommended for anyone who loves a peaceful onsen getaway. Stay a night in Shuzenji, Izu. Taking the bus back to Shuzenji Station.
