Hello everyone, this is Rie from the U.S. Today’s video is part two of our JR casual trip during our Japan visit—Toyama Day 2. We’ll enjoy strolling around downtown Toyama and tasting local specialties. Let’s head out for the second day of our gourmet journey. Good morning! It’s the second day in Toyama.
It’s 11:30 a.m., and we’re about to head to a sushi restaurant called Masa for lunch. Oh no, it says reservations only… It’s so hot today! The temperature is 34 °C with 54 % humidity, which isn’t too bad, so it feels a bit easier. Now, we’re going to another sushi place called Sushi Sakae, which is supposed to be very popular. Alright, let’s go to the sushi restaurant. We didn’t bring a Japanese phone number this time, so we couldn’t call ahead to reserve. In this hot summer, we should have asked the hotel to let us use their phone. By the way, this time we tried an eSIM instead of pocket Wi-Fi for the first time. It’s easy to recharge through the app, inexpensive, and very convenient.
I’ll leave a link in the description. Hope it’s not reservation only again. When we entered, they said there’s a one-hour wait, but we could wait inside, so we decided to stay. Rather than just showing the food, I’ll also add the English names of the fish. Here is medium-fatty tuna (chūtoro). Please enjoy. Wow, it’s huge! So delicious. Next is sweet shrimp (ama-ebi). Scallop—please enjoy as is. Mmm ❤️ Greater amberjack (kanpachi). Marinated tuna (zuke-maguro). The fish pieces are so big and satisfying. Spanish mackerel (sawara). Please enjoy. Striped jack (shima-aji). Toyama shrimp. White shrimp (shiro-ebi), salmon roe, and crab gunkan.
Soy sauce already added. Here you go. This is one full serving per person. White shrimp—so sweet! Delicious! Salmon roe (ikura). “That’s the end?”
“Oh, more salmon roe? You love it.” It’s piled like a mountain. How should I eat it? ❤️ Mmm! The crab is amazing, and there’s crab miso inside. Minced tuna roll (negi-toro).
“One each, please—without pickles?” “One without.”
“I’ll take with pickles.” Thank you. This chef’s choice sushi used plenty of fresh Toyama Bay seafood. It was 6,500 yen for 12 pieces and one roll per person—absolutely delicious. So good! After sushi, I was completely full, but my husband Mako still had room for ramen. There’s a shop near JR Toyama Station that serves Toyama Black ramen, so we went there. “Now this is how it should be!” (staff) Oops, I drank some plum shochu already.
It tastes like plum kelp candy. “I’m so happy!” “Wow, the soup is pitch-black!” “It’s a bit lukewarm… maybe because of all the chashu on top?” “These are fried batter bits.” Toyama Black is a dark soy sauce ramen originally made for laborers to replenish salt. Its rich broth is topped with plenty of coarsely ground black pepper. It’s typically mixed well and eaten with rice or raw egg as a side dish. Mmm… delicious, slightly bitter. The staff added extra broth midway through. After a hotel rest, it was time for dinner again. This time we craved meat, so we went to Yakiniku Shizuka. The bright wooden interior felt clean and private, with raised tatami seating—perfect for dates. They specialize in premium Japanese beef, serving it without heavy seasoning to highlight the meat’s natural flavor. “Is the salted tongue the thin cut?”
“Yes.”
“Then two servings, and one each of regular and premium short ribs.” Here comes the cucumber kimchi (oi-kimchi). Let’s enjoy the beef tongue! Here’s the lettuce wrap (ssam) set with cabbage and cucumber. Is this wagyu?
“Yes, the short ribs are amazing!” Yes, the regular short ribs—this is it. Now it’s Mako’s second ramen time today!
Don’t worry—he doesn’t always eat this much.
He says he adjusts his meals in the U.S. so he can indulge in Japan. Ramen after yakiniku… impressive. “Alright, let’s hope it’s tasty.”

“That’s the heat I like.” “The price is quite reasonable—around 800 yen.” Finally, we admired the beautifully lit Toyama Castle in the city center—a perfect end to the day. Shall we head back?
