Japan’s finest tree-lined avenues shining gold. A splendid autumn landscape reflecting a famous castle. There’s an autumn you’ve yet to see. 10th place: Chojuji Temple. Passing through the Sanmon Gate, you’ll find a tunnel of autumn leaves stretching approximately 100 meters. Chojuji Temple is an ancient temple said to have been founded in the Nara period. Fallen leaves cover the approach and stone steps. You can enjoy the autumn leaves at your leisure in a quiet, tranquil atmosphere . The main hall is designated a National Treasure. 9th place: National Treasure Hikone Castle . Genkyu Rakurakuen Garden, a scenic spot for Hikone Castle. Genkyu Rakurakuen Garden is a daimyo garden located north of Hikone Castle. The autumn leaves and Hikone Castle are reflected on the water’s surface. The garden depicts China’s Dongting Lake and the Eight Views of Omi. Hoshodai. Maple leaves envelop the former reception hall. Goshoin. The remains of the Ii clan’s lower residence, the feudal lord, are bathed in autumn colors. The stone walls and inner moat of the castle are also beautifully colored with autumn leaves. 8th place: Baekje Temple. This ancient temple is said to have been founded by Prince Shotoku. It is the oldest temple in the Koto Sanzan region, originating from the kingdom of Baekje on the Korean Peninsula. The stone-walled approach to the temple is known as “Baekje Temple Red.” Legend has it that Kobo Daishi dug the “Bonji Pond” to rebuild Baekje Temple . The vibrant autumn leaves are reflected on the water’s surface. The sound of bells fills the temple. 7th place: Kongorin Temple. This famous temple, known for its fiery crimson autumn leaves, is also known as “blood-stained autumn leaves .” Over 700 maple trees fill the temple grounds. The bright red leaves surround the three-story pagoda. 6th place: Keisoku Temple. Approximately 200 ancient maple trees color the temple grounds. The highlight is the carpet of autumn leaves along the approach to the temple. Keisokuji Temple is said to have been founded by Gyoki in the Nara period and rebuilt by Saicho. 5th place: Ishiyama-dera Temple. Murasaki Shikibu is said to have been inspired by “The Tale of Genji” at Ishiyama-dera Temple. Passing through the gate, the long stone path is enveloped in autumn leaves. Stone steps, taking advantage of the wollastonite terrain, continue throughout the temple grounds, leading to the historic halls and pagodas. The natural monument that gave the temple its name is the wollastonite. The pagoda stands on top of the wollastonite. The main hall and Kofuen Garden, which express the world of the Tale of Genji, are also featured. 4th place: Saikyo-ji Temple. Located at the foot of Mount Hiei, it was founded by Prince Shotoku. The approximately 150-meter approach to the temple becomes a tunnel of autumn leaves. It was burned down during the burning of Mount Hiei by Oda Nobunaga. When Akechi Mitsuhide was granted Omi Province, he rebuilt Saikyo-ji Temple. It is also known as the family temple where Akechi Mitsuhide’s grave is located. The main hall, principal image, and guest hall are designated as Important Cultural Properties. 3rd place: Eigenji Temple. An ancient Rinzai sect temple founded approximately 650 years ago. It is well-known as the home of maples. The approach, mountain gate, and Founder’s Hall are enveloped in autumn leaves. The sacred maple trees, said to have been planted by the temple’s founder, Zen Master Jakushitsu, turn a deep, rich red in autumn, illuminating the temple grounds. 2nd place: Enryakuji Temple on Mount Hiei. East Pagoda Area. Registered as a World Heritage Site. The view of the entire mountain dyed in autumn leaves is truly magnificent. West Pagoda Area. Minobuchi Benzaiten. Yokokawa Area. Konpon Nyoho Pagoda. Yokokawa Chudo Hall. The mountain ranges viewed from the driveway and observation decks along the way are also magnificent. 1st place: Metasequoia Avenue. One of Japan’s most beautiful tree-lined roads. Approximately 500 metasequoia trees are planted over an area of approximately 2.4 km. They show different faces with each season. Early November.
