日光国立公園の北端部をなす高原で、甲子山(1549m)東麓の甲子温泉・新甲子温泉(西郷村)一帯にあたります。
福島県中通り地方の母なる川というべき阿武隈川の源流地帯。深い原生林と随所に刻み出された渓谷があいまってつくりだす新緑や紅葉の景観美が見どころです。
江戸時代後期の白河藩主で隠退後は楽翁と号した松平定信もその自然を愛賞し、勝花亭・楽翁渓などの名所を残しています。国立那須甲子少年自然の家などのほかゴルフ場や別荘地・行楽施設など観光開発も進んでおり、栃木県道・福島県道290号那須甲子線で結ばれた南の那須地域(栃木県那須町)と合わせて、変化に豊んだ楽しみと景観を提供しています。

It is the headwaters of the Abukuma River, which is the mother river of the Nakadori region of Fukushima Prefecture. The beauty of the scenery created by the combination of deep virgin forests and gorges carved out in various places is a must-see.
Sadanobu Matsudaira, a feudal lord of the Shirakawa domain in the late Edo period (1603-1868), who went by the name of Rakuo after his retirement, loved and admired the natural beauty of the area, and left behind such famous spots as Shoka-tei and Rakuo Gorge. In addition to the National Nasu Koko Children’s Nature Center, the area is being developed as a tourist destination with golf courses, villas, and recreational facilities, and together with the Nasu area to the south (Nasu Town, Tochigi Prefecture) connected by the Tochigi Prefectural Road and Fukushima Prefectural Road 290 Nasu Kashi Line, offers a rich and varied array of enjoyment and scenery.
