Sotogahama Police Station Prefectural Road 12 Welcome back to our Tsugaru Peninsula drive. Our journey begins near Sotogahama Police Station. Here, we briefly take Prefectural Road 12. Soon we return to Route 280, which will eventually lead us to Cape Tappi. National Route 280 This road heads north through quiet fishing villages. Enjoy the ocean view stretching on our right. Today’s destination is Road Station Tairadate. Now we are driving through Sotogahama Town, located on the eastern side of the Tsugaru Peninsula. The area is known for Tsugaru folk songs and shamisen heritage. You may have noticed the colorful fishing floats piled up along the roadside. Sotogahama’s local culture is tied to fishing. Sotogahama town stretches along the coast of Mutsu Bay, with views of the calm inland sea and the mountains of the peninsula behind. The town covers a long, narrow strip of land running north–south along Route 280 and the JR Tsugaru Line. The northern end includes Cape Tappi, the very tip of the Tsugaru Peninsula. That is where we are heading. We’ll reach Cape Tappi in the next episode. The southern end near Kanita faces directly toward Aomori City across Mutsu Bay. Historically, Sotogahama was part of the Matsumaedō (松前道) route connecting Honshu to Hokkaidō. Minmaya once served as a port for crossing the Tsugaru Strait to Matsumae in Hokkaidō. The voyage looked short on the map— only about 20 kilometers at the narrowest point. But the strait was known for fierce winds and strong, shifting currents. Sudden fogs often appeared, and storms could rise without warning. Small wooden boats of the past were easily overturned. The journey could take several hours on calm days. In rough weather, boats drifted off course or never arrived. Many lives were lost attempting this crossing. The strait became feared as one of Japan’s most treacherous waters. Today, ferries and the Seikan Tunnel make the passage safe. But the history of hardship at Minmaya still lingers. Road Station Tairadate To be continued Thanks for watching!
