【北海道】定山渓温泉 ゆらく草庵に宿泊!全室天然温泉付き客室と人気の夜鳴きそばを堪能

Hello, this is Mary Channel. Day 2 in Noboribetsu, today we’re moving to our next hotel. Before that, we’re making a stop at the nearby sightseeing spot, Jigokudani (Hell Valley). It’s a 5-minute walk from the hotel to Jigokudani. Here is Noboribetsu’s hot spring source, Jigokudani. A crater remnant with a diameter of about 450 meters. The walking trails are well maintained, allowing you to explore the dramatic scenery surrounded by steam and the scent of sulfur. Around 9 a.m., it was relatively quiet, but gradually it started to get busy with tour groups. In the center of Jigokudani, there is a small geyser called Tessen-ike. Looking further in the distance… a herd of deer! A scene unique to the nature-rich Noboribetsu. A viewpoint overlooking Jigokudani. This is the path to Ōyunuma, where you can usually enjoy a foot bath, but it’s closed during winter. Unfortunately, we couldn’t go this time. Next, we’re heading to Sengen Park, right in front of Dai-ichi Takimotokan. Inside the park, there are nine golden club monuments said to have been left by Yukijin, the guardian deity of the hot springs. The eight visible above ground are color-coded monuments, each representing wishes like academic success or financial luck. The remaining one, “Great Wish Fulfillment,” is buried underground. The geyser in Sengen Park erupts every three hours or so, shooting water with a powerful sound. Unfortunately, I missed the timing and couldn’t see it. Now, we’re heading to Jozankei Onsen, where we’ll be staying tonight. It takes about 2 hours to get from Noboribetsu to Jozankei Onsen. On the way, we’ll make a stop at Noboribetsu Dairy Center. It’s about a 10-minute drive from Noboribetsu to the Dairy Center. We drive along a quiet road with some snow still on the ground. I’m a bit worried… are we on the right road? 😅 After driving for a while, we finally see Noboribetsu Dairy Center. Actually, this building used to be an elementary school. Now, it’s a direct shop selling dairy products, sweets, and local specialties. Local cheeses, yogurts, and drinkable cheeses are all lined up here. There are also Iberico sausages, prosciutto, bacon… basically, everything looks delicious. The milk pudding and rare cheesecake pudding can be taken home at room temperature, making them perfect souvenirs. The main reason we came here is to try the soft serve ice cream. Unfortunately, the machine was broken at the time, so we couldn’t have any 😭 As the name suggests, the pudding is smooth and creamy. he moment you take a spoonful, the rich sweetness of the milk spreads in your mouth—pure bliss. The ice cream has a strong milky flavor with a refreshing aftertaste. Eating it while enjoying the snowy scenery—why does it taste so good? Jozankei Onsen is a hidden gem in Sapporo, with hot spring inns lining the Toyohira River. The hot springs opened about 150 years ago, making it one of Hokkaido’s historic onsen areas. The area is beautiful in every season, especially famous for its autumn leaves and snowy landscapes. Now, we’ve arrived at tonight’s inn, Yuraku Sōan! Yuraku Sōan is part of the Kyoritsu Resort group, which operates hot spring inns across Japan. With a theme of “relaxation” and “hospitality,” it offers small perks that delight guests, like free late-night soba and private baths. The inn has tatami floors, creating a relaxing Japanese-style atmosphere. You leave your shoes in a locker and walk around barefoot inside the inn. The lobby features exposed beams and a low ceiling. True to its name, “Sōan,” it has the warm, cozy feel of a small house. In one corner of the lobby, there’s a space that resembles a traditional tea room, At certain times, the staff prepare and serve tea for guests. The waiting area next to the lobby has tatami floors, creating a very calm and relaxing atmosphere. With an irori hearth and kotatsu, you can feel the traditional warmth of a ryokan. It was busy during check-in,but…At night and in the morning, it’s quiet and the atmosphere is perfect. Here, you can choose your yukata. Now, let’s head to our room. The inn has 102 rooms in total, and every room comes with a natural hot spring bath. You can choose a pillow that suits your preference. Our room is close to the elevator. On the left is the bedroom, straight ahead is the sink, and to the right is the toilet. Our room this time is a modern Japanese-style twin. Two beds are placed on tatami flooring, creating a calm atmosphere where you can relax comfortably. The tea snacks are okaki rice crackers and Tsukisamu anpan (sweet bean bun). This famous sweet was inspired by Kimuraya’s sakura anpan. The TV is hidden behind sliding doors, showing their thoughtfulness in encouraging guests to enjoy a break from the everyday during their stay. A haori jacket and a bathing basket. Loungewear and tabi socks. A washbasin is located right in front of the bath. The amenities include a toothbrush and a skincare set. Every room comes with its own cypress-lined hot spring bath. Pressing this button adds more hot water to the bath. Let’s head down to the relaxation area on the first floor. The relaxation area is a space where you can unwind while enjoying a drink. From 3:00 to 7:00 p.m., there’s a tea buffet.
From 6:00 to 7:00 p.m., light snacks are served. From 8:00 to 10:00 p.m., there’s a bar (ticket required). Since there aren’t many seats, most guests take their drinks back to their rooms. The souvenir shop sells Hokkaido sweets and popular Shima-enaga (snow fairy bird) goods. You can take the amenities you need from here. Before dinner, let’s head to the large public bath “Iwabuki no Yu” on the basement floor. 床は畳敷きで濡れても滑りにくく
足ざわりも心地いいです The hot spring area is well-equipped, featuring a cypress bath, a rock bath, open-air reclining baths, waterfall showers, a sauna, and even a stone sauna. Jozankei Onsen is also called “Atsu-no-Yu” (Hot Spring of Heat), with source temperatures ranging from 60 to 80 degrees Celsius. Yuraku Sōan has as many as four types of private baths. No reservation is needed—if the indicator light isn’t on, you can use it. The private baths are located outside the main building. This time, the timing didn’t work out, so we couldn’t use them. The cypress bath—soothing with the warmth of the wood and its pleasant aroma. The rock bath, where you can enjoy a dynamic atmosphere as if you’re surrounded by nature. The Hiba cypress bath, filled with a refreshing aroma. The ceramic bath, giving a comforting feeling as if you’re being gently embraced. After warming up in the bath, you can relax in the post-bath lounge. From 10:00 p.m., the area becomes the venue for late-night soba. The drinks available are water and apple cider vinegar with yuzu honey. From 3:00 p.m. to 10:00 a.m. the next day, ice cream is served for free! Dinner is served on the first floor at “koun.” We enjoyed a drink while waiting to be seated. Dinner is served in two shifts. I chose the 5:30 p.m. seating. Octopus rice (tako okowa) Otsuwai crab with miso Cashew nuts with Kuju seasoning Marinated skate fish (kasube no nanbanzuke) Grilled shirako chawanmushi Pear and white grape cocktail (non-alcoholic) Sashimi: tuna, winter yellowtail, seared scallops, and squid Wagyu beef shabu-shabu Yume-kemuri steamed dish If you still have room, you can order from these five additional dishes. Beef stew, cream cheese salad, three-piece sushi platter, and Inca no Mezame potato croquettes. For the meal, you can choose from curry, mushroom udon, or plain rice. I chose the mushroom udon. It feels like the perfect finale after the beef shabu-shabu. Yuraku’s signature curry. Fruit punch kappa-shaped nerikiri (Japanese sweet) At the end, we enjoyed some traditional Japanese snacks. The room’s bath has an automatic water-fill function. You can enjoy the hot spring anytime you like. From 10:00 p.m., the famous late-night soba is served. When I lined up 10 minutes before it started, I was already third in line. By around 10:10 p.m., when I finished eating, there was already a long line. There are free massage chairs near the private baths. Ice cream and a massage chair make for a blissful time 🍨 The water can be a bit hot, so it’s best to fill the bath before meals or bedtime. Adding cold water dilutes the hot spring minerals, so this method works best. * Breakfast is served from 7:00 to 9:30 a.m. Since they mentioned we could get a window-side seat if we came early, we arrived at 7:00 a.m. Grilled items: red salmon, Saikyo-style grilled sablefish, cod roe, and Izumi-yaki fish. Hokkaido-grown new rice, Yumepirika “Asa no Tomo” side dishes: black soybean natto, grilled seaweed, hot spring egg, and salted squid (ika-shiokara) King crab teppō-jiru (crab miso soup) Meat tofu Soy milk yuba and marinated tuna Mushrooms and mizuna with sesame dressing Apple jelly The rice has a nice crispy layer at the bottom. White rolled omelet Branded with the same mark as the large public bath’s name Enjoyed with a yuzu pepper sauce Breakfast at Yuraku Sōan is a gentle, healthy Japanese-style meal. You can enjoy the flavors of Hokkaido. Steamed basket: Yukinoshita cabbage, Inca no Mezame potatoes, broccoli, cauliflower, root vegetables, and sausage. Until checkout, we relaxed in the lobby for a while before heading out to explore the area. From the hotel, it’s just a one-minute walk to “Ashi no Fureai Tarō no Yu”, a free foot bath spot. Since it’s covered, you can enjoy it even on rainy days, and there’s also a fortune slip you can try for a bit of fun. Next, we headed to Futami Suspension Bridge. It’s a sightseeing spot easily accessible on foot from Noboribetsu Onsen town. The suspension bridge is about 23 meters long. The vivid red bridge contrasts beautifully with the snowy landscape. The river is covered with snow, creating a pure white world. We were able to fully enjoy the clear, wintry scenery. This is the accommodation cost for this stay.
