【小江戸川越】昼間から酔える!レトロな街で利き酒&絶品グルメ散歩🍶
A stroll through Kawagoe’s food scene . This time, I’ll be walking through “Little Edo Kawagoe,” a popular tourist spot in Kawagoe City, Saitama Prefecture. I arrived at Honkawagoe Station. I’m looking forward to enjoying delicious food and a slightly retro townscape as I stroll along. First, I head to the shopping district (Claire Mall). As I continue, I arrive at “Little Edo Kurari”! At the entrance, I see the “Tokugawa Iemitsu float,” used in festivals, stored. Let’s go inside. Apparently there’s a “Kikizake-dokoro” (a shop) in the back, so I’ll stop by later. They sell Kawagoe specialties and Showa-era goods unique to Little Edo. “Kura Cafe” is a small coffee shop with a relaxed atmosphere that seems comfortable even for solo diners. As Kawagoe is known for its sweet potatoes, I spotted a pile of “Oimochippus”! Even the gachapon machines have a Little Edo feel! 😄 A little further along, I arrive at “Taisho Roman Yume-dori” (Taisho Roman Dream Street)! Along the way, I came across Kumano Shrine, so I paid a visit. Passing through the torii gate, I found two differently shaped “foot pressure points” on each side. I couldn’t make it all the way, but if you’re here, I highly recommend giving it a try. After purifying yourself at the temizuya (water purification fountain), you pass through the Nagi-no-wa (circle of waves) before praying. After passing through, return the information card to its original place and then pray. At Kumano Shrine, the Yatagarasu is worshipped as the “god of guidance.” Even in this very spot, there were adorable Yatagarasu statues! There were also many types of fortune-telling slips! Just choosing one was a joyous experience. There was even a jumbo Yatagarasu at the back of the shrine! Visiting the shrine left me feeling refreshed! During the day, the sunlight poured in, creating a refreshing atmosphere, but in the evening, the lanterns were lit, creating a truly magical atmosphere. Now that I was finished praying, I decided to look for my next destination. There seemed to be some kind of place to eat on the left, so I went. Drinkable roasted sweet potatoes?! They’re definitely delicious! Apparently it was featured on TV! There are lots of other delicious looking items! I immediately ordered the “Drinkable Yakimo & Chips”!! It was quite a portion!! I really love the moderate saltiness of the rock salt and the crispy texture! I couldn’t stop eating it!! It was delicious! The Drinkable Yakimo doesn’t use sugar or ice, so it has the simple sweetness of the sweet potato, making it refreshing to drink! …I was wondering where to go… I decided on a cute, pop, American restaurant! Since I can’t eat that much, I decided to order a compact burger. The slider burger comes in “tall” and “small”, and the “tall” has four burgers, while the “small” has two! You can choose your favorite flavor (sauce) from six options. I ordered these four types! I thought they were small, but they were surprisingly filling! I couldn’t finish it in one bite. I tried the “Sweet Potato” flavor recommended by the staff, and my impression was that it contained sweet potato paste and had a subtle potato flavor that was delicious! The other standard flavors were also delicious, but I especially liked the tartar sauce! The portions are large for small appetites, so I recommend sharing! Thank you for the meal. Now, let’s head back to the shopping street. There are lots of small “carp streamers” swimming around! They look adorable, swirling vigorously through the sky. We arrived at Kashiya Yokocho. This square area is “Kashiya Yokocho.” Near the entrance, there was a bustling shop called “Chiikawa Mogumogu Honpo.” It was a nostalgic alley with a collaboration of sweet potatoes, cute handmade candy, and candy stores. Miyakoya’s “yakidango” (grilled dumplings) are just the right size for snacking on the go, and each soy sauce dumpling costs just 50 yen! Kids can buy them with their pocket money. I bought bread at Bakery Rakuraku in Kashiya Yokocho. The “Miso Bread” was fluffy and delicious with the sweet and salty flavor of miso! Across the street is Sandwich Parlor Rakuraku, a chain of similar stores. They offer a variety of hearty sandwiches! I bought these two! 😋 They also have a eat-in area on the second floor. They’re incredibly thick! 😆✨ They’re so soft and delicious!✨✨ I had a hearty bite, so I think I was right to get takeout. This sandwich is a must-have for egg lovers! It’s light and easy to eat! It’s packed with fillings right down to the last bite, which is great! 🥰 They seem to sell out quickly, so be sure to buy early! Ebisu-an, a shop that sells rolled egg skewers for takeout, offers everything except the eel rolled egg skewers for 300 yen! The plain version is just 250 yen! This egg was about the size of my hand and quite filling. It was freshly cooked and piping hot! The broth was rich and fluffy, making it incredibly delicious! With my stomach full, I headed to the “Toki no Kane” (Bell of Time). As I was about to look down, a shopkeeper behind me called out to me and told me, “You can see the bell from the far end of the street!” Thanks to him, I was able to see it from a great vantage point. Thank you so much! The sound is so beautiful, I’ll enjoy it at my leisure. The lingering sound after the bell rings is also soothing. The old bank has now been reborn as “Coedo Terrace,” and the entire building is now home to a members-only startup support center, restaurants, and galleries. Inside, there were stylish dishes lined up. The street-facing side is a cafe where you can take a break. I returned to Koedo Kurari for some sake tasting. It was my first sake tasting, so I was a little nervous, but I decided to give it a go. This shop boasts a wide selection of sake from all breweries in Saitama Prefecture, the fourth largest producer of sake in Japan ! It uses a medal system, with three medals purchased for a 500-yen coin. The number of medals required varies depending on the drink, but we were able to enjoy it with just one. 🍶 *Medals are purchased from a vending machine that accepts 500-yen coins only. Please note that 100- yen coins are not accepted. *There is a change machine for 1,000-yen bills, but larger bills (5,000-yen and 10,000-yen bills) are not accepted. It seems you can also purchase snacks with medals! For drinks not available in the vending machines, go to the counter and order from a staff member. Products without a medal number are not available for tasting. It’s nice to be able to find your favorite flavor, as buying a bottle and not finding the flavor you like can be a hassle. They also have soft water (chaser), so you can feel at ease. Let’s get started. I tried a liqueur, but I used all three medals in one drink. I have to buy another medal … oh no! This is sweet and delicious, like juice! I can gulp it down, so it might actually be dangerous! Vending machine corner! There’s a whole row of sake here! I wonder if there’s one I can drink… ① First, set the paper cup. ② Insert a coin. ③ Press the button for the sake you want. ④ The sake will be poured into the paper cup. Most vending machines only give out one medal. This is the naughty one that won the gold medal at the 12th National Kanzake Contest (2020)! The aroma isn’t too strong, and it’s light and easy to drink! There are also various snacks to go with it, which gets me excited! Next, this sake has a beautiful color. This is honey plum sake. It’s sweet, but refreshing and delicious. ◎ Thank you for the meal. I was happy that there were so many delicious places even when I just stopped by. Thank you for watching.
