[About Kitsuki Samurai Residences]
Kitsuki, located in Oita Prefecture, is often called Japan’s only samurai town with samurai districts on both sides of a commercial street. The Kitadai (north) and Minamidai (south) samurai quarters face each other across a slope lined with merchant houses. These districts preserve samurai residences, white plaster walls, and stone steps, offering a glimpse into the Edo-period townscape. Today, Kitsuki remains one of Japan’s most atmospheric samurai towns.
