大池公園は矢吹町の北部に位置しており、「水・花・緑が香る公園」をテーマに、池と町木のアカマツの生い茂る自然空間を活かし、町民、近隣市町村の人々のやすらぎと憩いの場とするため、昭和59年より事業着手し平成16年度完成しました。エントランス広場には、石から水が湧き出る噴水があり、子どもたちの遊び場になっています。また、日本庭園には四季折々の花が咲き乱れ、7月上旬から1ヶ月間は『大賀蓮（古代蓮)』の大輪が周辺を散策する人たちの心を和ませます。
※大賀蓮（別名 2千年蓮）
1951年（昭和26年）千葉県検見川（けみがわ）遺跡で、大賀一郎博士により一粒の蓮の実が発掘されました。この推定2000年以前の蓮の実は、翌年見事に花を咲かせました。博士の偉業をたたえ大賀蓮と名付けられ、千葉県の天然記念物となっております。
なお、矢吹町が譲り受けたものは純系といわれております。花色は桃紅色、花形は一重、大輪径22cm前後です。
Ooike Park is located in the northern part of Yabuki Town. Under the theme of “a park with the fragrance of water, flowers, and greenery,” the project was started in 1984 and completed in 2004 to provide a place of relaxation and recreation for residents of the town and neighboring municipalities by taking advantage of the natural space with a pond and a thick growth of red pine, the town tree. In the entrance plaza, there is a fountain with water gushing from a stone, which is a playground for children. The Japanese garden is filled with seasonal flowers, and during the month of early July, the large flowers of the “Ooga lotus (ancient lotus)” soothe the hearts of visitors strolling in the vicinity.
Ohga lotus (also known as the 2,000 year old lotus)
In 1951, a single lotus seed was excavated by Dr. Ichiro Ohga at the Kemigawa site in Chiba Prefecture. This lotus seed, estimated to be 2,000 years old or older, bloomed beautifully the following year. The lotus seed was named “Ohga lotus” in honor of Dr. Ichiro Ohga’s great achievement, and is a natural monument of Chiba Prefecture.
The lotus that Yabuki Town received is said to be of a pure lineage. The flower color is peach-red, the flower shape is single, and the diameter of the large flower is around 22 cm.
