【滋賀の穴場】こんなところがあったのか!?大阪から2時間「びわ湖の軍艦島」と絶壁に建つお堂と戦争遺跡
Hello, this is Ikenoueno. Following on from Okishima, which I previously introduced, I visited one of Lake Biwa’s four islands, an island reminiscent of Gunkanjima . There are three islands in Lake Biwa where you can land. First, Chikubujima. Home to Hogonji Temple and Tsukubusuma Shrine, it’s famous as a power spot. The second is Okishima, which I introduced the other day. It’s Japan’s only inhabited freshwater lake island, exuding a Showa-era retro vibe. And now, I’ll introduce Takagejima, named after the island’s changing appearance depending on the angle from which you view it. It’s a 1 hour and 50 minute drive from Osaka to Hikone Port, and a 20-minute boat ride from Hikone Port to Takagejima. It ‘s known as Lake Biwa’s Gunkanjima. It’s a relatively small island, measuring just 600 meters in circumference. This is what the interior of the boat looks like. You can also access the second-floor deck. We set off aboard a regular sightseeing boat. Takagejima is 20 minutes away. It’s located 6.5 km off the coast of Hikone. The entire island is the grounds of the Nichiren sect’s Kento-ji Temple. It has been worshipped as a sacred island since the Yayoi period. Takagejima itself is a natural granite reef jutting out from the lakebed. Originally, the island was called Takeshima due to the abundance of bamboo growing there. The island’s stay is 40 minutes. An announcement is made upon arrival explaining how to worship. There used to be a 10-meter-tall “Daimoku Rock” (Daimoku Rock) with the words “Namu Myoho Renge Kyo” engraved on it, but it appears to have collapsed in 2018. It’s windy. The entire island is the grounds of Kento-ji Temple. The temple was founded in 1655 as a memorial for those who drowned in Lake Biwa. This is Daimoku Rock. The words “Namu Myoho Renge Kyo” were engraved on the rock face on the right. Unfortunately, it collapsed due to a natural disaster and sank into Lake Biwa. We take a stroll around the island. This seven-story stone pagoda was built by Ii Naosumi, the third lord of Hikone Domain, as a memorial for his father. It also houses a statue of Shakyamuni Buddha (Shakyamuni), the founder of Buddhism, descending the mountain after six years of ascetic practice, choosing to attain enlightenment. This precious statue is the only one of its kind in Japan. The “Oath Pillar” is inscribed with the Five Articles of the Imperial Oath of Emperor Meiji. These articles, including “1. We will hold open discussions and decide all matters by public opinion, ” were issued in 1868 when the Meiji government was established, signaling the dawn of a new era to the people. It is located behind Kento-ji Temple, at the highest point on the island. Finally, we head to the island’s most spectacular view spot. Originally, the island was a rocky area with little vegetation. At its base, there are sheer cliffs. The current appearance was achieved when Ii Naosumi, the lord of Hikone Domain, brought soil from Mount Arajin and planted pine trees. The view of Hikone from Lake Biwa is a mysterious one. The strong winds and the cliffs make it a little scary, but the view is well worth it. Our 40-minute stay on the island was sufficient. The round-trip fare, including island admission, is 2,000 yen. The ferry service is closed from December 1st to the end of February of the following year and from April 1st to April 20th. Before coming to Takagejima, we actually visited another archaeological site: Iogi in Maibara City, a 20-minute drive from Hikone Port. From Iwawaki Inari Shrine, you can see the Tokaido Shinkansen. Located 3km from Maibara Station, Iogi is home to a war relic. There are several other attractions as well. First, we visited Iwaya Zenkodo. According to legend, during the reign of Empress Suiko, Honda Zenko, associated with Zenkoji Temple, enshrined a Buddhist statue here. The hall is built like a stage jutting out from the cliff, reminiscent of the stage at Kiyomizu Temple. Inside the hall is a stone statue of Amida Buddha. It is said to grant good health and safety for the home. Currently, it can only be viewed through glass, but its solemn atmosphere is a testament to its solemn atmosphere. Maibara Station is the only Shinkansen station in Shiga Prefecture and the junction between the Tokaido and Hokuriku lines. During the Pacific War, Maibara Station was targeted in air raids. Construction of a shelter began in secret to protect locomotives. Working against the hard bedrock, it was dug by hand using gunpowder, shovels, and pickaxes. However, construction was halted at the end of the war, and the shelter was left unfinished. Two shelters remain on Mt. Iwawaki. One is 52 meters deep and partially open. The other is 130 meters deep and completely open. The open shelter can be accessed through a back door. Although it is completely open, it is not large enough for a locomotive to enter. For a long time, it was used as a garbage dump, but thanks to the efforts of local residents, it has been renovated and is now preserved as a war relic. The sweat, tears, and prayers for peace of the people of that time are engraved here. Thank you for watching until the end.
