【ゴールドラッシュの記憶】時が止まった金山へ…大分の鯛生金山で体験する「歴史の鼓動」| 大分県日田市中津江村

This time, we visited Nakatsue Village in Hita City, Oita Prefecture. We went to the Taio Gold Mine Subterranean Museum. It’s one of the few former mines in Kyushu open to the public. We heard it was impressive, so we came to check it out. Nakatsue Village became famous in 2002 as the training site for the Cameroon national soccer team during the World Cup. Gold mining at Taio began in 1898. At its peak, it produced 2.3 tons of gold annually, making it the largest gold mine in the East. The total length of the tunnels is about 110 kilometers. They dug as deep as 500 meters underground. Today, part of the mine has been turned into a museum. Let’s go inside and explore. The temperature inside the mine is a cool 14°C. In 1918, British engineer Hans Hunter acquired the mine and began mining with modern equipment. The workforce grew to around 3,000 people, turning the area into a bustling mining town. The village was filled with movie theaters and restaurants, full of life and activity. As we venture deeper into the mine… We spot a dump truck ahead. Its shape has a lot of character. What’s amazing is that it’s not a replica. It’s an actual truck that was once used in the mine. Now we head into the shaft zone. The massive hoisting engine is truly overwhelming. Gold ore from several hundred meters below was lifted using shaft cages connected to this machine. It could bring materials up from 500 meters below in just about a minute and a half. This is the First Shaft. The shaft cage, suspended by thick wire, carried ore, workers, and materials up and down like an elevator. Moving ahead, we find the underground repair shop. To break through hard rock, tools wore out quickly. This is where they repaired drills and other equipment. Farther along, we find a battery-powered locomotive. It was used to transport gold ore inside the mine. It could pull anywhere from five to ten ore carts. Now we enter the mining zone. Here, scenes from the mining days have been recreated. You can really feel the authentic atmosphere of the mine. These tunnels were carved out by countless workers. Miners toiled here, sweating through harsh conditions, risking their lives in pursuit of gold. Within this dim space was once a world full of life. You don’t just see history here— you walk through it and experience it firsthand. It’s so immersive, you forget the passage of time. Mining continued here until the Showa era. Many of the heavy machines used back then are still on display. It’s definitely worth seeing. A recreated mining site this detailed is truly rare. We go even deeper underground. The tunnels are beautifully lit up with illumination, creating a dreamlike, magical atmosphere. Finally, we reach the early mining zone. This area shows how mining was done during the Meiji era. The exhibits are designed to show the work process clearly. You can really understand what mining was like back then. It appears that women also worked in the mines. The hopes and hard work of the people were passed down through generations. This wasn’t just a sightseeing spot— The cool air and rugged rock faces made me feel the connection to nature and gave me a deeper sense of learning and discovery.
