KYOTO Kanmi – Japanese Sweets – Hello! This video introduces seven Kyoto sweet shops. We’ll introduce you to some long-established shops where you can enjoy seasonal Japanese sweets and warabimochi (bracken-starch dumplings). I hope you enjoy the video until the very end. Our first stop is “Hosen” in Shimogamo, a three-minute walk from the Shimogamo Higashihonmachi bus stop. We visited during Setsubun season. 👹 The seasonal decorations are beautiful. We arrived right after opening, so we were the first to enter the teahouse overlooking the garden. ♪ The freshly made “Oni wa soto” (demon out). The corners are adorable! The sticky sweetness is delicious… The must-try here is the wildly popular warabimochi, made to order. The springiness you can only get from freshly made warabimochi…! The soft, smooth texture is unmatched! We had a steady stream of customers, including some from overseas. We had a relaxing time, so we recommend the “morning sweets”! Now, let’s move on to our next stop. Our second stop is “Umezono,” a six-minute walk from Sanjo Station on the Keihan Main Line. Enjoy the restaurant’s signature mitarashi dango and a bouquet of dorayaki pastry paste on one plate. The coffee and warabi mochi set , with the fragrant sweet and salty mitarashi dango sauce, is also a favorite. Once you step through the door, you’re transported away from the hustle and bustle outside, and feel like you’re in another world. Now, let’s move on to our next restaurant. Gion is a vibrant street, home to many teahouses built in the Kyoto machiya style. Our third stop is Gion Komori, located near Tatsumi Bridge over the Shirakawa River. It’s a four-minute walk from Gion-Shijo Station on the Kyoto Main Line. This charming tatami room, housed in a former teahouse, offers the sound of babbling brooks. From ice cream, warabi mochi, jelly, castella, and generous portions of matcha ice cream, the menu is exquisitely sweet and delicious. Adding brown sugar syrup… The richness of the flavor deepened … A light, sweet Japanese dessert with a pleasant aftertaste, and a truly blissful moment. Now, let’s move on to the next shop. Let’s walk down Ichijo Street for a while. The fourth shop is Toraya on Ichijo Street. It’s a seven-minute walk from the Imadegawa subway station. It’s a must-visit shop when talking about Japanese sweets. ☺ We had a special seat overlooking the beautiful garden. ♡ We visited in the middle of summer. The cool, refreshing taste was a welcome treat. With views of the Inari Shrine and the Edo-period storehouse, you can really feel the history. We enjoyed the cold shiratama (rice flour dumplings) with sesame paste! The paste was very smooth. The aroma of sesame spread throughout the mouth. Adding a little white sugar syrup created a gentle sweetness perfect for summer. This is a sophisticated shaved ice enjoyed with syrup made with Toyama sake. Toraya’s white bean paste and brown sugar yokan are unique. The ice is filled with sweet bean paste. This shaved ice truly embodies Japanese culture. ♪ Every time I visit, I enjoy the beautiful setting and seasonal sweets. It’s one of my favorite shops. Now, let’s move on to the next shop. Ogawa-dori, with its Kyoto-esque atmosphere, is home to the Omotesenke Fushinan on the right. The fifth shop comes into view: “Kyoto Confectionery Tawaraya Yoshitomi.” It’s a five-minute walk from Imadegawa Station on the Karasuma Subway Line. This long-established Japanese confectionery shop was founded in 1755 (the 5th year of the Horeki era). Next to the shop, quietly located is “Charon Tawaraya.” We walked through a narrow alley to the right of the store to enter Charon. This shop was featured in the “Kyoto People’s Secret Pleasures” as the shop where the heroine had tea. ☺ Today, we’ll enjoy our tea on the terrace while admiring the autumn leaves. I’ll have a matcha set. Their signature confection, “Unryu,” is a seasonal, high-quality confection. It’s filled with moist, large, red bean paste. The sweetness is not too strong. It pairs well with matcha and is very comforting. It was delicious. I also wanted to buy some souvenirs, so I visited the shop. It’s nice to be able to experience the four seasons through Japanese sweets. I bought some seasonal dried sweets and gluten-based confections. They were all so cute, I think I bought a little too much… Now, let’s move on to the next shop. My sixth stop was Daigokuden in Rokkaku. It’s a six-minute walk from Karasuma-Oike Station on the subway. I came here to cool off in the summer and enjoy some summer sweets. This is a long-established Kyoto confectionery shop that was founded 140 years ago. The Rokkaku store offers sweets in a charming space renovated from a Kyoto townhouse, but unfortunately, there was an hour-long wait on this day. I decided to buy some souvenirs here and then head to the main store. I moved to the main store on Takakura-dori. This one has a modern interior. This is it! This is what I wanted to try ♡ The popular amber-flowing syrup, enjoyed with the monthly changing honey. At the main store, you can enjoy two flavors: the same as at the Rokkaku store, and one exclusive to the main store . The yogurt is exclusive to the main store. It’s smooth and refreshing, with soft agar and a refreshing syrup. It’s a refreshing taste. Enjoying the freshness of summer in Japan . At home, I had “Lace Kan,” a summer-only stick-shaped confectionery . It ‘s apparently a dish of lemon slices encased in kingyokukan, resembling lace. 🍋 Cool to the eye, refreshing to eat. Now, on to the next shop. The seventh shop is “Otowa Chaya.” It’s located on Asahizaka, a short walk from the Kiyomizu-Gojozaka bus stop toward Kiyomizu-dera Temple. Entering the alleys of Kiyomizuzaka… It seems there’s a cafe at the back… I walked further in, taking a peek at the pottery shop. The sound of wind chimes created a refreshing atmosphere. It felt like a relief from the heat, so strangely , I waited a little, but they let me in fairly quickly. It’s such a calm space that you’ll almost forget about the crowds on the main street! It’s an outstanding view overlooking the city of Kyoto. You can even see Kyoto Tower in the distance! Quench your thirst with plum cider. Refreshing – carbonated drinks are delicious in summer 🌞 Feel the Kyoto vibe with matcha sweets. I enjoyed a relaxing time. I hope this video is helpful for your Kyoto sightseeing. Thank you for watching until the end. Subscribing to the channel and giving it a high rating will encourage me. I hope to see you in the next video… Have a nice day 🌞
