今回は島根県出雲市にあります出雲大社（いずもたいしゃ）の紹介です。

Izumo Taisha Shrine is famous for its god of matchmaking and is a symbol of Izumo, the birthplace of mythology. We will introduce its history and how to worship there in detail.

神々の国と呼ばれる出雲の地に、その象徴のように建つ出雲大社。八雲山を背にした境内には森厳な空気が漂い、数千年の歴史を持つ神殿が厳かに建っています。空を突き刺すような本殿屋根の千木を仰ぎ見ると、壮大な神代の世界も想像に難くありません。神々が集い、古代より人々から仰ぎ尊ばれてきた出雲大社。その由来や歴史、参拝ルートなどを詳しくご紹介いたします。
Izumo Taisha stands as a symbol of Izumo, known as the land of the gods. With Mount Yakumo as its backdrop, the shrine grounds are filled with a solemn atmosphere, and a temple with thousands of years of history stands majestically. Looking up at the chigi rafters on the roof of the main hall that seem to pierce the sky, it is not difficult to imagine the magnificent world of the Age of the Gods. Izumo Taisha has been a place where gods gather and has been revered by people since ancient times. We will introduce in detail its origins, history, and pilgrimage routes.

出雲大社の由来
The origin of Izumo Taisha

縁結びの神・福の神として名高い「出雲大社（正式な読みはいづもおおやしろ）」は、日本最古の歴史書といわれる『古事記』にその創建の由縁が記されているほどの古社で、明治時代初期まで杵築大社（きづきたいしゃ）と呼ばれていました。
Izumo Taisha (officially pronounced Izumo Ooyashiro), famous as the god of matchmaking and good fortune, is an ancient shrine whose origins are recorded in the Kojiki, said to be Japan’s oldest historical book, and was called Kitsuki Taisha until the early Meiji period.

主祭神はだいこく様として馴染みの深い「大国主大神（おおくにぬしのおおかみ）」。
『古事記』に記される国譲り神話では、大国主大神が高天原の天照大神（あまてらすおおみかみ）に国を譲られます。そのときに造営となる壮大な宮殿（※）が出雲大社の始まりといわれています。
※『日本書紀』では天日隅宮（あめのひすみのみや）と表記
The main deity is Okuninushi-no-Okami, familiarly known as Daikoku-sama.
In the myth of the transfer of the country recorded in the Kojiki, Okuninushi-no-Okami transfers the country to Amaterasu-Omikami of Takamagahara. The magnificent palace* constructed at that time is said to be the beginning of Izumo Taisha Shrine.
*In the Nihon Shoki, it is written as Amenohisumi-no-Miya.

出雲大社の歴史
The history of Izumo Taisha

現在の本殿（国宝）は延享元年（1744）造営されたもので高さは約24mですが、出雲大社の社伝によれば、太古の時代、出雲大社本殿の高さは現在の4倍、約96mあったということです。
The current main hall (a national treasure) was built in 1744 and is approximately 24 meters tall, but according to the shrine legend, in ancient times the height of the main hall was approximately 96 meters, four times its current height.

本殿の後ろにある八雲山が約100mですから、山の頂上付近に千木（本殿屋根の先端にある交差した二本の木）が見えていたと想像すると、現代でも圧倒される高さです。
また平安時代の頃には約48mあったと伝えられ、平安時代中期の貴族の子弟の教科書『口遊（くちずさみ）』には、雲太（うんた）、和二（わに）、京三（きょうさん）という言葉が記されており、これは当時の建物の高さベスト3を表現していると言われています。
Mount Yakumo, which lies behind the main hall, is about 100m high, so when you imagine the chigi (two crossed trees at the tip of the main hall’s roof) visible near the mountain’s peak, the height is impressive even today.
It is said that during the Heian period, the height was about 48m, and the textbook for the children of aristocrats from the mid-Heian period, Kuchizusami, contains the words Unta, Wani, and Kyosan, which are said to represent the top three heights of buildings at the time.

「雲太」とは出雲大社本殿、「和二」は東大寺大仏殿、「京三」は京都御所の大極殿を示し、当時本殿が日本一の高さを誇っていた事が分かります。
“Unta” refers to the main hall of Izumo Taisha Shrine, “Waji” refers to the Great Buddha Hall of Todaiji Temple, and “Kyosan” refers to the Daigokuden Hall of the Kyoto Imperial Palace, which shows that the main hall was the tallest in Japan at the time.

この説は明治時代から様々な研究がなされ、当時の技術ではその高さの木材建築は不可能ではないかとも言われてきました。しかし2000年に本殿の南側で鎌倉初期の造営と推定される三本一組の巨大な柱根が発掘され、巨大な神殿の存在を裏付ける発見となりました。
This theory has been the subject of much research since the Meiji period, and it has been said that a wooden building of that height would have been impossible with the technology of the time. However, in 2000, a set of three gigantic pillar bases, believed to have been constructed in the early Kamakura period, were excavated on the south side of the main hall, providing evidence of the existence of a gigantic shrine.

大国主大神（オオクニヌシノオオカミ）について
出雲大社の主祭神である大国主大神は、多くの兄弟の末っ子として出雲に生まれました。大きな袋と打出の小槌を持って米俵の上に立つ「だいこく様」の姿でもお馴染みです。
神話では「因幡の素兎」が有名で、サメに全身の皮を剥かれた白ウサギが、大国主大神の兄達から“海水に浸かり風に当たれば治る”と教えられ、そのとおりにしたところ傷は酷く悪化してしまった。ウサギが痛みで泣いているところを遅れてやってきた大国主大神がやって来て、“真水で塩を洗って蒲（ガマ）の穂に包まれると良い”と教えたところ、ウサギの傷が癒えたというお話で、大国主大神の優しい性格がうかがえる一幕です。
大国主大神は出雲王朝を繁栄させるという偉業を成し、多くの女神と結婚してたくさんの子供をもうけました。大国主大神が縁結びの神様と言われる由縁でもあります。
