【福井旅】三国温泉民宿の海鮮手巻き!国定公園東尋坊の絶景!
“Lovely Partner Elpa” in Fukui City, Fukui Prefecture This shopping mall is loved by the people of Fukui Prefecture, and today I came to have lunch at “Fukushin” in Fukui City, Fukui Prefecture. It was once famous as a famous restaurant for sauce katsudon, rivaling Europaken, but sadly closed in 2023. Last year, Fukushin reopened in the food court of Elpa. Apparently, there was an enthusiastic approach from Elpa when it reopened. I haven’t eaten it since about 10 years ago, but I’ve always wanted to eat it again. “Fuku Menchi Donburi (Medium)” 1,250 yen This is my companion’s order: “Katsudon (Medium)” with two large pieces of minced meat . My order was 1,250 yen and was a medium size, with three pieces of pork cutlet, pickles and miso soup. Like the Europa Ken I went to the other day, two pieces of pork cutlet are stored on the lid to make it easier to eat. The thickness of the pork cutlet is thinner compared to the Europa Ken in Tsuruga, so the sauce soaks into the pork cutlet better. The shiny rice soaked in sauce is also delicious. It’s been too long to compare it to the old Fukushin, but it’s an authentic sauce pork cutlet bowl that you wouldn’t expect to find in a food court . I’m glad I was able to eat Fukushin again! When we finished eating and went outside, the rain had weakened. On the way from Toyama, it rained so hard that we couldn’t see in front of us, so it was a real challenge. We headed towards Mikuni, where we would be staying for the night. We went to the Mikuni Fureai Park Misatohama Roadside Station in Sakai City, Fukui Prefecture , where we found a farm produce direct sales store, souvenir shop, restaurant, and more. We bought grilled mackerel sushi, local juice “Sawayaka,” and a wide selection of local vegetables and fish. We bought a few vegetables. Mikuni Town was once a thriving port town as a base for Kitamaebune ships. In 2006, it merged with Maruoka Town, Harue Town, and Sakai Town to become Sakai City. We took a walk through the streets of Mikuni Port, where you can see the Kuzuryu River, which symbolizes Mikuni Town . Several historical buildings remain in Mikuni Port. One of these is the “Former Morita Bank Head Office” in Sakai City, Fukui Prefecture. This is one of them, and it has been designated a registered tangible cultural property by the Agency for Cultural Affairs. Admission is free, but the museum is closed on Mondays. Opening hours are 9:00-17:00. Completed in 1920 as the Morita Bank’s head office, this building merged with Fukui Bank and operated as the Fukui Bank Mikuni Branch until recently. Outside, the rain was pouring down again. I gave up on further walking around town and drove to a park near my lodgings. I took shelter in the car for a while , and when the rain finally stopped, it was time to check in, so I headed to my lodgings: “Ohira-an” in Sakai City, Fukui Prefecture. They serve lunch from 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM. This lodging was renovated from a minshuku ( Japanese-style guesthouse) that closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The lodging’s website describes it as a “renovated, good old minshuku,” so I imagined it to be a more old-fashioned place, but the interior was incredibly clean. My room was on the second floor, “Sansho,” a non-smoking Japanese-style room with 8 tatami mats (no bath or toilet). The futon was self-service. The room was also quite clean, with a TV, refrigerator, and electric kettle . Towels, hangers, and a safe were provided . Unfortunately, it wasn’t an ocean view . There was tea and coffee on the large table, and welcome sweets in the refrigerator! I’ll have some later. The toilet was spacious and clean, the bathroom was new, the faucets stylish, and the bookshelves were full of manga! There is a drink bar on the first floor (free for guests staying overnight). The bath opens at 4pm, so we decided to head to Mikuni Sunset Beach right in front of us.Even though it was the end of August, there were people swimming in the sea.We were able to enjoy the hot springs and were free to choose our own shampoo and soap. The hot spring at Ohira-an is Mikuni Onsen , a sodium and calcium chloride hot spring. The water is hot, slightly alkaline and smooth, and is said to be effective for easing sensitivity to the cold and recovering from fatigue. It was time for dinner, and the sky was beautiful at dusk. For dinner, we had the Mikuni Seafood Hand-Rolled Sushi Plan, with the bottom tier of the two-tiered sushi set featuring hand-rolled ingredients, vinegared rice, and seaweed in a clay pot.We started with a salad of crisp mizuna, cherry tomatoes, and dried daikon radish tofu. All the appetizers were carefully prepared, and the clay pot sushi had a great broth with shiitake mushrooms, enoki mushrooms, shrimp sashimi, etc.! Now, from here, we have the hand-rolled tuna, which has a moderate acidity and is delicious. Grilled mackerel with shiso leaves is served in a grilled mackerel sushi style with crab, salmon roe, and okra. Red sea bream, red sea bream, and kelp-cured and vinegar-cured salmon go perfectly with salmon roe. The octopus and sweet shrimp have an interesting difference in texture. Served with eel and cucumber and Japanese pepper, the squid is finely chopped and easy to eat. Finally, we added all the remaining ingredients. Wow, it was delicious! The chef has won a gold medal in the Fukui Prefecture Cooking Skills Competition, and the quality is convincing. Thank you for the meal. We had a homemade roll cake as a welcome dessert . It was not too sweet, and it was delicious. The next morning , we went to the same place as yesterday for breakfast. A gorgeous breakfast, steamed in a bamboo steamer with sausages and mizuna (Japanese mustard greens). The miso-braised mackerel was a delight for the morning. Pickles, a soft-boiled egg, salad, Echizen seawater tofu, sesame tofu, pickled vegetables, tofu dumplings , dried daikon radish, and natto were spectacular. The mackerel was sweetly seasoned, which made the rice go down well. The sausages in the bamboo steamer were unusual, and the enoki and mizuna were also crunchy. They were all gently seasoned, which made my chopsticks go down well in the morning. Finally, I finished with natto rice. It was a delicious meal . Check-out: The weather was beautiful, a stark contrast to yesterday . Today, I’m heading to Tojinbo, one of Fukui’s most famous scenic spots. I parked my car in the car park at Araiso Fureai Park, where I visited yesterday, and walked along the Araiso Promenade . Tojinbo is just over 1km away. It’s about a 15-minute walk. There is a sign explaining the ecosystem in the area. It’s a hot summer day, and sweat is pouring out of me . I can see Tojinbo Tower, just a little further away. There is a stone monument of Noritake Kazuo, a poet with ties to Fukui . Tojinbo Tower, the symbol of Tojinbo . Tojinbo is close to Toyama, and I used to come here many times when I was younger. When I first got my driver’s license, it was a great driving spot. However, I haven’t been here in a long time, maybe about 10 years. “Echizen Coast Tojinbo Quasi-National Park” Dacite, a type of volcanic rock, forms columnar joints over a wide area. Places like this are rare even worldwide. It is one of the world’s three most beautiful mountains and, together with Oshima, is designated as a natural monument of Japan . The sheer cliffs of Tojinbo are also known as a popular suicide spot, with over 150 people from all over the country coming to the area each year with the intention of taking their own life. Currently, the police, local residents’ associations, and tourist associations are working together to prevent suicides by patrolling the area and installing lighting. “Kokoro ni otoshi mochi” (grated rice cakes that resonate with the heart) is available for lunch in Sakai City, Fukui Prefecture . This restaurant is run by the NPO “Kokoro ni otoshi mochi editorial office.” The restaurant’s president, Shige Yukio, has been referred to in newspapers and on television as “Wait a Minute Uncle,” and is known for his work reaching out to people who are considering suicide. “Kokoro ni otoshi mochi” (grated rice cakes) 500 yen The signature dish is grated mochi (rice cake with grated radish). This classic local dish is served with grated radish and soy sauce . The spicy grated radish and mochi go perfectly together in this “oroshi soba” (500 yen). Speaking of Fukui, it’s definitely grated radish soba. You add the soup and bonito flakes yourself , and it looks delicious . The noodles are flat, maybe 28%? The flavor isn’t too strong. The soba, grated radish, green onion, and bonito flakes all blended together to create a delicious dish. Thank you for the delicious meal. The beautiful Tojinbo Botanical Garden, with its majestic and rugged scenery, makes you feel the natural grandeur. Wait a minute, the old man’s grated mochi.
