Did you know that Hanamaki Onsen, a popular hot spring resort in western Iwate Prefecture, has two meanings? One is “Hanamaki Onsenkyo,” a collection of hot springs. This hot spring resort includes various hot spring inns known as the Hanamaki 12 Hot Springs, including Shidohira Onsen and Namari Onsen, which we’ve previously introduced on our channel . This is what most people associate with Hanamaki Onsen. Meanwhile, the other Hanamaki Onsen is “Hanamaki Onsen,” one of the largest hot spring hotel groups in Tohoku, consisting of three large hotels and one luxury ryokan (traditional Japanese inn) operated by Hanamaki Onsen Co., Ltd. In this video, we’ll introduce the latter, “Hanamaki Onsen,” including details about each of the three hotels, various rooms, and breakfast and dinner buffets . This video is packed with highlights, so please take your time to watch. History and Overview: Among the numerous hot spring inns, from small inns to large hotels, Hanamaki Onsen stands out with its large blue, green, and orange roofs . Hanamaki Onsen was founded in 1923. With the concept of “building a resort comparable to Takarazuka,” Kindaichi Kokushi opened the resort by drawing water from Dai Onsen. It has developed into a comprehensive leisure land complete with multiple inns, a zoo, tennis courts, and a ski resort . In 1927, Hanamaki Onsen Co., Ltd. was founded. In the same year, it won first place in a newspaper-sponsored popularity poll for the “New Eight Views of Japan,” receiving 2 million votes, making the resort known nationwide. The former Shounkaku Annex, a large two-story wooden inn building that has hosted many famous people, including Emperor and Empress Showa , was designated as Hanamaki City’s first Registered Tangible Cultural Property in 2018. Kashoen opened in 1964 (completely renovated in 1999), Hotel Hanamaki opened in 1974, Hotel Koyokan opened in 1979 , and Hotel Senshukaku opened in 1985. There are three hotels: Hotel Koyokan from the back, Hotel Hanamaki, and Hotel Senshukaku near the entrance. With a total of 422 rooms, this is one of the largest hot spring hotels in the Tohoku region. We’ll introduce each hotel later. The three hotels are connected by a connecting walkway called the Rose Path. The meals are similar, and the large public baths are shared, so you can decide which hotel to stay at based on your room . If you had to choose a hotel, I recommend Hotel Hanamaki, as it’s centrally located, making it easily accessible to the other two. You can also use the shuttle bus to travel between the hotels. It’s about a five-minute drive from Hanamaki Interchange on the Tohoku Expressway . Shuttle buses are also available from Hanamaki Airport, JR Hanamaki Station, Shin-Hanamaki Station, and Sendai Station (reservations required). Let’s take a closer look at each hotel. Hotel Koyokan Hotel Koyokan has 7 floors above ground and 1 basement, with a total of 138 rooms. The large public bath is “Momiji no Yu.” While it’s far from the shops near the entrance, the hotel is close to the rose garden, scenic spots, and Kamabuchi Falls. Enter the hotel through the city-hotel-style entrance! Hanamaki Fuka, the hot spring girl, will greet you in the entrance lobby. Bicycle rentals are available (1,000 yen/3 hours). The Rose Festival is currently underway! (I’ll check it out later.) Check-out at the front desk is via an automatic check-out machine. Hanamaki Onsen offers day-trip bathing. Here’s a tour of the hotel: Festival Square : Events are held in the evening, which I’ll introduce later. Welcome Lounge: Drinks and other items are available from 7:00 AM to 9:00 PM. “Deer Dance” (1979) by Hashimoto Yaoji . Kuji Amber Shop : Red Path. A large shop with a wide selection of goods. Hanamaki Onsen sweets, Morioka’s three major noodles, amber-colored dashi, crafts such as Nambu ironware, and general drinks are also available. There ‘s a yukata selection corner (300 yen). The large public bath, Momiji no Yu, on the first basement floor, also features a fitness gym. It’s a fairly professional gym with an oxygen capsule. There’s also a beauty salon corner. Massage machines are available for an additional fee (300 yen). ^^ Introducing the Momiji no Yu women’s bath. The Momiji no Yu women’s changing room is spacious enough for a large hotel. Pola cosmetics and amenities like combs are provided with partitions for privacy. 👍 A wide selection of baby products and baby soaps are also available . 👍 The shampoo bar is also convenient, allowing you to choose your favorite shampoo. 👍 The source is Hanamaki Onsen, pH 7.8, simple hot spring, with a temperature of 59°C . Hygiene is maintained through water addition, heating, circulating filtration, and disinfection. The stained-glass entrance is stylish. ♪ Momiji no Yu women’s indoor bath : A spacious and open bath space. The bath is tiled and narrow, but spacious enough. A large window offers views of the open-air bath and the mountains in the distance. Sturdy handrails ensure barrier-free access. 👍 The sauna is spacious and a full-fledged dry sauna. There are plenty of washing areas. The provided shampoos include horse oil shampoo, and you can try cosmetics from the shop. There are partitions to ensure privacy. 👍 Momiji-no-Yu Women’s Open-Air Bath. The roof is made of thick pillars and beams, and the spacious rock bath has a great atmosphere. 😊 Handrails and steps make it easy to enter. 👍 Deck and “Variable Pot Bath” space . Collagen bath , honey bath. Enjoy the private baths in a single-person setting.♪ The changing area and indoor bath are almost identical. Momiji-no-Yu Men’s Indoor Bath (almost identical to the women’s bath). Momiji-no-Yu Men’s Open-Air Bath . At first glance, it looks similar to the women’s bath, but there’s no central pillar, making it one large bathtub. Despite the roof, it still feels open.♪ Like the women’s bath, there’s a deck and a unique pot bath. Yucca (said to ward off evil spirits), Yakuho- yu: A bath with natural herbal medicines, Rose Path (Komichi), Hotel Hanamaki (the carpet changes color^^), Fukuro Chaya: A teahouse specializing in sweets^^, Hanamaki Onsen Co., Ltd. Commemorative Historical Exhibition: A video related to Miyazawa Kenji, merchandise featuring Major League Baseball players Otani and Kikuchi, both of whom graduated from Hanamaki Higashi High School, Bridal Salon, Hotel Hanamaki . Hotel Hanamaki has 102 rooms, seven floors above ground and one below ground. It offers the most comprehensive facilities, including the open-air bath “Hanamaki Manten no Yu,” newly opened in 2024, the large public bath “Hanamaki no Yu,” a private bath, table tennis, a game corner, and karaoke . Located in the center of the three buildings, it offers easy access to the other hotels. Hotel Hanamaki: Lobby Lounge, Hotel Hanamaki: Front Desk, Himekami Souvenir Shop . The product selection is similar, and the welcome lounge is small . The yukata selection corner is also similar. Introducing Hanamaki Manten’s Women’s Bathhouse. Hanamaki Manten no Yu Women’s Bath Changing Space This bath was newly built in 2024, so it is very new. There is a washing area in front of the bath, along with hair dryers and POLA cosmetics . Shampoos are the same as those in the large bath . Hanamaki Manten no Yu Women’s Bath Manten no Yu only has this open-air bath. The bathtub and roof are new, and the garden seems to be still in the process of being completed ^^ There is no roof at the back, so it feels very open ♪ Next is the men’s bath. Manten no Yu Men’s Bath Changing Space Manten no Yu Men’s Bath Hotel Hanamaki 2nd floor Lots of gachapon machines ^^ Sakura Dining is the buffet venue at Hotel Hanamaki. Large public bath Hanamaki no Yu Let’s start with the women’s bath. Hanamaki no Yu Women’s Bath Changing Space Hair dryers, cosmetics, etc. are also available. Baby goods and shampoo bar Hanamaki no Yu Women’s Bath The entire indoor bath space is very spacious. The bathtub is also spacious enough. The sauna is similarly spacious and authentic ♪ There is also ample washing area. The open-air bath and the view outside can be seen from the large window. Hanamaki no Yu Open-Air Bath A luxurious stone bath. It looks like it could comfortably accommodate 5-6 people. Although there is a roof and a screen, the open feeling is quite good. Next is the men’s bath. Hanamaki no Yu Men’s Bath Changing Room Hanamaki no Yu Men’s Bath Indoor Bath Hanamaki no Yu Men’s Bath Open-Air Bath Hotel Hanamaki’s basement floor has karaoke, S&D (fee required), and a kids’ space. ♪ Laundry room for guests only (free), table tennis (800 yen for 50 minutes for guests), a games corner, and a massage corner (300 yen for 15 minutes) . Hotel Hanamaki’s basement floor is shared with the day-use bathing facility “Horai-yu.” The same floor also has a private bath (45 minutes, 2,800 yen for guests, 3,800 yen for day use). Let me introduce you to the private baths . The one I used this time is “Momiji,” one of four private baths. The changing room is spacious and the whole place is very new. There are both men’s and women’s cosmetics, hair dryers , and amenities . The private bath, Momiji, has a large Shigaraki-yaki bathtub in the center, with a small garden-like design in the back. The water is colorless, transparent, odorless, and easy to use. There are two wash areas. The shampoo brand is PROVINSCIA. We walked along the rose path from Hotel Hanamaki to Hotel Senshukaku. From the second floor of Hotel Hanamaki, we arrived at Hotel Senshukaku’s third floor. The third floor was a wedding venue. Hotel Senshukaku. Hotel Senshukaku has 12 floors above ground and one basement, for a total of 182 rooms. It has the largest number and variety of rooms, accommodating a wide variety of travel styles, from business travelers to group travelers. Hotel Senshukaku entrance lobby . A photo of the Imperial family staying at the hotel. They have stayed at Hotel Senshukaku and Kashoen multiple times. The lounge drinks were similar . Kimura Akio’s Onikenbu (1985) souvenir shop “Miyama” Kuji amber shop. Hotel Senshukaku. Basement 1. The Fuji Room on the basement 1 floor is the buffet venue. Nanbu Fuji (Mount Iwate) Aromatherapy, massage machines and milk vending machines are also great♪ First, the men ‘s bath, Chiaki no Yu. Men’s bath, changing area . There was also a powder room here. Lockers with locks are available in sizes from large to small👍Chiaki no Yu. The men’s bath is indoors only, but it is very spacious. It is a large bath that can fit about 20 people^^ Chiaki no Yu no Mi, the wall is decorated with roses^^ After all, Hanamaki Onsen is known for its roses🌹^^ Waterfall bath. When you press the button, a waterfall falls from above^^ The tub bath is a tub bath where you can enjoy the color and scent of rose sandalwood roses👍There is also a shallow “sitting bath” and a cold bath. There is also a TV^^ There are also plenty of washing areasChiaki no Yu. Women’s bath. At first glance, it looks the same as the men’s bath, but… there is a rose bath (^^/ (Women’s bath only). Depending on the season, you can take a rose bath (apparently the roses are not from the rose garden). Women should definitely try it (^^♪ Check-in. We were given an explanation of meal times and the baths. Both dinner and breakfast are buffet style, but dinner is served at 5:30 or 6:00, Breakfast was served from 6:30 to 8:30, and we had free time. Let me explain the guest rooms . Hanamaki Onsen has a total of 422 rooms across all three hotels! We offer a wide variety of rooms to accommodate a variety of needs, from single guests to families and groups . Guest rooms are divided into Japanese-style rooms and rooms with beds. With the renovation, more rooms with Simmons beds have been added, so if you’d like to sleep in a Simmons bed, we recommend choosing a room with a bed. Next, we’ll introduce Twin B, a 10-tatami Japanese-style room, and a Japanese-modern room. Room Review: Hotel Koyokan, 3rd Floor, Room 330. This is Twin B at Hotel Koyokan. As a Western-style room, the entrance leads directly to the back of the carpeted area. The roof of Shounkaku, a registered tangible cultural property, can be seen directly in front. This room (35 m²) was renovated in December 2022 and became a Western -style room. The semi-double Simmons bed was incredibly comfortable! 👍 The face towel is personalized. It is likely common to all three buildings. There was a USB-A and a power outlet between the beds . Mineral water is free. There was nothing in the fridge, which also sells “Hanamame” (bean paste ). These are slippers for use in the building. From the right, there is the bathroom, washbasin, and toilet. The toilet is a bathroom with a washlet . Shampoo is also provided. Toothbrushes, razors, shower caps, combs, and other essentials are also provided. Hair dryers and WiFi are available in the rooms. Mobile phone signals are also good. Next is the 10-tatami Japanese-style room at Hotel Senshukaku . This is the most standard room. This is the view from the Hotel Senshukaku side . Futons are laid out for you at night. The bathroom, washbasin, toilet, etc. are the same. Hotel Senshukaku This is a 10-tatami Japanese modern room that was renovated in December 2023. It has a tatami floor and twin beds♪ A Simmons semi-double size bed and a desk that looks easy to work on♪ The washbasin and toilet are the same . I walked around the hot spring town from the gate to Kamabuchi Falls. There is a foot bath and hand bath just before the drug shop (Tsuruha Beauty Hall) Hanamaki Onsen Inari Shrine and Hotel Senshukaku^^ A hand bath might be rare (^^♪ The Rose Festival was being held, so, Let’s take a peek (^^♪ Hanamaki Onsen Rose Garden opened in 1960. With an area of about 16,000 square meters, there are over 6,000 roses of about 450 varieties, decorating the garden with vibrant colors and rich fragrance throughout the seasons. There was also a shop . It was lovely at night, so I will introduce it to you after dinner. Shounkaku, a registered tangible cultural property (hidden by the trees 😅) is a great place to take a walk in the forest ♪ You have to go down quite a few stairs (of course, you have to go up on the way back 😅) There are stone monuments and other things along the way. There are bells to ward off bears in several places 😅 The view of the mountain stream is wonderful. Plenty of negative ions (^^♪ We’ve arrived at Kamabuchi Falls ~ (^^/ Apparently it was named “Kamabuchi” because it looks like an upside-down kettle. The waterfall, where the clear stream falls diagonally over a large rock 8.5m high and 30m wide, is refreshing ^^ If the weather is nice, why not take a stroll too? It’s time for dinner . We’re enjoying a dinner buffet at Momiji Dining on the second floor of Hotel Koyokan. They’re having a fair with crab and three kinds of beef dishes, teppanyaki, and kamameshi ^^ We’re greeted by Fukuro, the mascot character of Hanamaki Onsen 😆 Buffet venue The Momiji Dining venue is very spacious, with plenty of seating. Hanamaki Onsen’s proud buffet buffet, which includes crab, teppanyaki, and kamameshi ✨ We’ll introduce you to everything! There’s the teppanyaki corner, seafood scallops with butter and soy sauce, and Genghis Khan ♪ They all look delicious (^^♪ There’s the seasonal 3-kind Kamameshi corner, crab , clams, and wild vegetables . I’ll show you the finished dish later. And then there’s the crab 🦀 corner 😋, where the thick crab legs look like they’re overflowing (^^♪ Crab served with crab vinegar, the sashimi corner, and tuna served in a boat-shaped platter ^^ Tuna sukiyaki , Hayachine from Iwate, soy sauce, scallops, and bonito tataki. The sushi corner features sushi rolls with tuna, squid, shrimp, and more. One of the 3 beef dishes is the live steak corner ♪ The steak is served with this sauce! The roast chicken is also piping hot ♪ Tororo Yuba, Oma pickled vegetables, mozuku seaweed in vinegar and salted sea squirt , mozzarella caprese, and 3 beef dishes, served with roast beef baguette ♪ The last of the 3 beef dishes is beef curry, pork saute, tomato sauce, ratatouille, quiche, lasagna, fried noodles, Japanese-style pasta, eggs, and wood ear mushrooms. Pork moussuro, shrimp chili sauce , stewed offal , fried summer vegetables, 4 types of pickles , edamame and pumpkin potage, kids’ corner, french fries, fried chicken, pizza , futomaki , inari sushi, Iwate’s specialty hittsumi soup, ramen and soba corner, ramen soup , soba noodles served cold with toppings such as green onions, bamboo shoots, mekabu (wheat leek), grated maple leaves, and roasted pork, rice is from Iwate Prefecture, and the salad bar (corn, seaweed salad, seafood marinade, broccoli, mixed beans, lettuce, pumpkin salad) has 4 types of dressing. (Sesame, green shiso, onion, French) The dessert section was very rich👍There was even rose ice cream^^ Grape, pineapple, orange, grapefruit , blueberry jelly, panna cotta, fruit cocktail, and plenty of mango cakes♪ Can you guess what kind of roll cake it is?^^(The answer will be revealed later) Roll cake (chocolate) Roll cake (cheese) Basque cheesecakeMatcha cakeCookie and cream cakeStrawberry mille crepeChocolat raspberryUshihi mochiPetit choux tiramisuHandmade cookiesDrinks cornerAlcohol corner with sodas, coffee, and moreAll-you-can-drink was 2,000 yen. I tried it and it was presented like this~It’s so luxurious♪ First, a toast with beer🍻Iwate ‘s local dish, Hittsumi soupIt ‘s a wheat flour paste with a texture similar to mochi, with a strong chicken and burdock broth👍For sushi, we started with tuna♪ Next, squid♪ The steak was freshly grilled live👍It was cooked quite well^^ It was thick but soft and delicious😋Crab Kamameshi It’s done~ (^^/ This is the total from the pot, so I think I could eat three kinds (^^♪ The crab flavor is strong and very delicious~ 😍Next, we had clam rice pot~ (^^/ Both were great~ 😍Lots of clams^^ The broth was great and the flavor was outstanding👍The ramen was boiled in advance with pork fillets, menma, and green onions, so all we had to do was pour the soup over🤗The light soy sauce soup was delicious with no strong flavor♪ We put the Genghis Khan on the fire👍It ‘s nice to have it freshly cooked on a ceramic plate👍The Genghis Khan sauce is rich and the meat is thick but tender😋We brought dessert~ (^^/ The rose🌹 ice cream is a must-try♪ It had a rose🌹 scent and was really delicious~ 😍The mango was not a pudding but a fruit^^This roll cake was actually watermelon when I looked closely🤗It said roll cake (cheese) but… we enjoyed many unique desserts^^ Dinner buffet I was very satisfied (^^/ After dinner… First, we went to the Rose Garden at night. An event is held every night at the festival square of Hotel Momijikan . On this day, there was a Tsugaru shamisen live performance. It was a very enjoyable live performance♪ Daily illumination events include the Rose, Light and Sound Ensemble and HIKARI Street. There are also plenty of events at night, so you can enjoy it however you like♪ Night view time lapse from the room Good night ~ Zzz It’s sunny today ~ (^^/ It’s breakfast time Breakfast is served in the same venue as the breakfast buffet. The staff prepares from early in the morning. The breakfast buffet is also excellent, and I’ll show you everything. The highlight of the breakfast is the bread corner! You can enjoy freshly baked bread in the oven right in front of you (^^♪ Mini chocolate Danish Mini mocha swirl Mini apple lattice Caramel Danish Mini palmier Bread Soft roll croissant Fried eggs are baked fresh on the stove♪ You can also choose your toppings♪ Mekabu Mozuku seaweed, natto, seaweed Salted salmon Salted mackerel Young corn Tosa-ni Iwashi simmered with ginger Salted squid , nametake mushrooms, shrimp salad, 4 types of pickles Western food corner Baked scrambled eggs Neapolitan This was my first time trying this^^ Wieners, meatballs , bacon, ham , seafood marinade, white fish and mango escabeche, beef curry , rice with Hitomebore corn soup from Iwate Prefecture, Chinese jellyfish, Chikuzenni, komatsuna and mushroom salad , thick omelet , chilled tofu , and a Yamagata breakfast staple, dashi ^^ Tororo and egg udon – boil it yourself and add the soup♪ This is miso soup. Pour the soup in and add your toppings. There’s also porridge . The toppings for the porridge are pickled mustard greens and sweet and spicy ginger salad with bar dressing. The morning drink is 100% orange, tomato, grape juice, and coffee . The highlight of the morning dessert is… all-you-can-drink Yakult. This is great! There’s also a wide variety of fruits (lychee, grapefruit, pineapple, grapes) . There’s also a wide variety of milk and yogurt toppings. ☺️ English: There ‘s also an ice cream corner in the morning♪ This is how the breakfast we tried was arranged – it’s luxurious even in the morning😍 The miso soup is topped with nameko mushrooms, wakame seaweed, and green onions ♪ All-you- can-drink Yakult is great♪ (I’m from the Yakult generation^^) First of all, the first bowl of udon seems to have been made with a soup containing beaten eggs, which is a bit unusual . The egg gives it a mild taste♪ The tofu is refreshing and delicious😋 Although this is an inn in Iwate, they had some Yamagata dashi, so I tried that♪ It’s delicious on rice – the crunchy texture is delicious😋 The fried egg was served piping hot on a ceramic plate , which was great👍 Let’s eat some freshly baked bread♪ I’m an old man who loves bread^^ Super crispy😍 Super delicious😋 Yakult (second bowl) Chocolate Danish This one is also crispy^^ It’s filled with chocolate^^ For dessert, I had only rose ice cream😅 It has a wonderful aroma . Finally, you can take coffee back to your room👍 Check-out Hanamaki Onsen, Iwate Prefecture What did you think? At the end, I received a stamp ^^ I was able to enjoy three hotels at once, including the large public bath and open-air bath, and it was a very satisfying stay with good value for money. We will continue to introduce various accommodations, so please continue to check. Food, drinks, services, etc. may be subject to change, so please check the official website for the latest information before going out.
