Welcome to Sapporo! Many travelers start their journey here from Sapporo Station. Today, we’ll introduce the convenient underground shopping area! You can walk comfortably without worrying about the weather,
and it’s a great spot for sightseeing. From Sapporo Station to Odori Park and then to Susukino, did you know that all of these are actually connected underground? Winter in Sapporo can be tough with snowy streets! But if you use this underground walkway,
you can get around without worrying about the weather! It’s comfortable even with a suitcase. However, there is one downside… The underground streets are complex, and it’s easy to get lost the first time… “I couldn’t reach the shop I wanted…” “I ended up taking a really long detour…” We hear these kinds of comments often. So today, we’ll clearly explain Sapporo’s underground streets! We’ll also introduce Hokkaido-style food and shops, so please enjoy until the very end! First, let’s start with the entrance from Sapporo Station. If you exit from the “West Gate” of JR Sapporo Station,
it’s easy to enter the underground walkway (Chika-ho). The available hours are from 5:45 a.m. to 12:30 a.m. Outside of these hours, the entrance is closed, so please be careful. Now, let’s look at the Apia Dome in the Sapporo Station South Plaza. The glass dome lets sunlight into the underground shopping area. In warmer months, many people sit around it, making it a popular meeting spot. You can also enter the underground area from here. The underground shopping area “Apia” has a shopping district on the east side and a gourmet street on the west side. Today, we’ll pick out Hokkaido-style shops to introduce. Here are the featured shops in Apia. “Wakasaimo,” familiar to many Hokkaido residents. At the Sapporo Apia store, they offer freshly baked sweet potatoes every day. The sweet potatoes are hollowed out, mixed with cream and egg yolk, and baked to perfection. The freshly steamed “Poppo Manju” is also popular. A nice point about “Wakasaimo” sweets is that they can be purchased individually! The classic Wakasaimo. Interestingly, it’s made from beans, not sweet potatoes. This is another famous confection that reflects Hokkaido’s climate and history. Apia has many other attractive shops, but today we’ll focus on spots where you can enjoy Hokkaido’s unique tastes and atmosphere. From here on, you’ll reach areas where tourists often get lost. For such travelers, we’ll introduce a “trick to understand your current location in Sapporo”! First, let’s look at a map to understand the layout of Sapporo. Here is the starting point: JR Sapporo Station. Then Odori Park with the TV Tower, the bustling Tanukikoji shopping street, and the nighttime entertainment district, Susukino. Sapporo’s streets are laid out in a grid-like pattern, which is one of its characteristics… But did you know the whole grid is actually tilted about 9 degrees to the west? This subtle tilt is deeply related to Sapporo’s history. Going back to the Meiji era, when the Hokkaido Development Commission planned Sapporo’s city layout, they used the “Otomo Moat,” now known as Sosei River, as a reference. In fact, this river was dug by hand for about 4 kilometers by Otomo Kametaro, a disciple of Ninomiya Sontoku (Kinjiro), as an agricultural waterway at the end of the Edo period. Later, it became the Sosei River, which marked the “beginning” of Sapporo city. Although it was dug intending to run north-south,
the river is actually tilted about 9 degrees to the west. Since the city blocks were laid out based on this river,
the center of Sapporo is naturally tilted at the same angle. In other words, Sosei River is both a “guidepost” and a reference point for Sapporo’s city blocks. Furthermore, east and west are divided by the river, and north and south are divided by Odori Park, so Sapporo’s addresses are all determined based on these two references. For example, if the address says “Minami 1-jo Nishi 1-chome,” it means “1 block south from Odori Park, 1 block west from Sosei River.” Knowing this, you can quickly figure out your location even without a map, making sightseeing much easier. Also, Sosei River once played an active role as a canal. Boats transported goods and supported the development of Sapporo. For this reason, near Sosei River, there is “Nijo Market,” where fresh seafood gathers. Around it, the arcade shopping street “Tanukikoji” formed, continuing for over 150 years. Sapporo’s cityscape combines nature and history with the lives of its people, creating a harmonious urban environment. By the way, if you ever get lost, it’s very helpful to use the TV Tower as a reference: “Which direction and how far am I from it?” Today, we’ll introduce an underground shopping street… It runs directly beneath this very street! From JR Sapporo Station to Odori Park and all the way to Susukino, the Chikaho is more than just a passageway. It’s a space filled with cafes, shops, and exhibition areas. Not only can you move comfortably even on snowy or rainy days, but it’s also a convenient spot for tourists. Of course, there are also subway stations along this route: Sapporo Station, Odori Station, and Susukino Station. For tips on using the subway conveniently and economically, we cover it in detail in another special video. We’ve put the link in the description, so be sure to check it out. If you’re planning a trip to Hokkaido, don’t forget to subscribe to the channel! Now, let’s access Hokkaido’s delicious food from the Chikaho! On the right, you’ll see the basement of the Nippon Life Sapporo Building. Here you’ll find the classic Hokkaido gourmet spot, “Matsuo Genghis Khan.” It’s a restaurant where you can enjoy Hokkaido’s representative local dish, Genghis Khan (grilled lamb). The lamb marinated in a secret sauce, unchanged since the restaurant’s founding, is characterized by a mild aroma and easy-to-eat flavor. Meat is grilled in the center on a special pan, while vegetables and udon noodles are simmered in the surrounding groove, making it a visual delight too. It’s enjoyable to watch as well. For budgeting, lunch costs around 1,500–2,000 yen, and dinner is approximately 3,000–5,000 yen. Another spot in the same building is “Tokachi Butadon Ippin,” a popular restaurant serving Tokachi’s specialty pork bowls. The grilled pork and secret sauce are its main features. Starting with the standard “Butadon” (1,150 yen), you can adjust the rice and pork portions to your preference. It’s a great place to enjoy authentic Tokachi pork bowls in the Sapporo area. Now, leaving the Nippon Life Sapporo Building, you’ll see the entrance to the Daido Life Sapporo Building (miredo) on the left. Here, you can easily enjoy Hokkaido’s seafood at the popular restaurant “Nemuro Hanamaru Conveyor Belt Sushi.” Prices are reasonable, around 2,000–3,000 yen, making it perfect for tourists. Reservations are not accepted, but you can get a ticket from the machine at the entrance. It can get crowded, especially at lunch, so arriving before opening or visiting at off-peak times is wise. It’s a popular spot to enjoy Hokkaido’s seafood, choosing and eating it happily. On the 2nd floor of the same building, you’ll find the popular soup curry restaurant “Suage4.” They use vegetables grown on their own farm, “Suage Agri,” for a carefully prepared bowl. The soup combines chicken, pork bone, tomatoes, onions, and over 10 kinds of spices. The sweetness of the ingredients and deep flavor are its signature. The average budget for lunch and dinner is about 1,500–2,000 yen. Moving further from miredo, on the right is “Akarenga TERRACE (Red Brick Terrace).” It’s located directly opposite the former Hokkaido Government Office Building, also known as the “Red Brick Office” (nationally designated Important Cultural Property). It’s a commercial facility perfect for stopping by during sightseeing. It’s filled with restaurants, cafes, and shops. A must-visit spot here is “Chinese Restaurant Hotei,” located on the 3rd-floor food court “Bar Terrace,” yet serving authentic Chinese cuisine at reasonable prices. It’s a popular spot among locals as well. Their specialties are “Zangi” (Hokkaido fried chicken) and “Mabo Noodles.” Prices are affordable, ranging from 750–1,900 yen. It’s easy to visit with children or alone. It’s perfect for those who want to enjoy authentic Hokkaido Zangi during sightseeing. You can enjoy both the view of the Red Brick Office and the gourmet food. Next, we’ll introduce the convenient Chikaho “Exit 9” for Sapporo sightseeing. This exit is the closest to Sapporo’s symbol, the Sapporo Clock Tower. As you may remember, the current location is Kita 1 Nishi 3. That is, one block north from Odori Park, three blocks west from Sosei River. Now, let’s go above ground and walk to the Clock Tower! Knowing this route is especially useful during winter trips. You can avoid long walks on snowy streets, making travel much easier. Another underground route on the opposite side is worth mentioning. This path leads to the popular sweets store, Kitakaro Sapporo Main Store. Its address is Kita 1 Nishi 5. It’s also very convenient for winter travel. Enter the “Kita 1 Jo Underground Parking Connection” extending west from Chikaho, and take Exit 2 to arrive right in front of Kitakaro Sapporo Main Store. This historical building was constructed in 1926 (Taisho 15). Inside is a sweets shop. The classic building gives a sense of history, and you can enjoy Hokkaido-style food and sweets, a unique experience. Returning near Exits 9 and 10, the brown-tiled building across is the Sapporo North Plaza Building. This building hasn’t changed much over the years. I used to attend summer classes here as a student. At that time, there was a music store in front of the Clock Tower, and I enjoyed checking out guitars after classes. …Honestly, the guitars were my main reason to go (laughs). The music store is gone now, but the North Plaza Building remains the same. For me, it’s a little “historical building” (laughs). Back on track, there are popular restaurants in the basement. One of them is Soup Curry Shabakura. Here, you can enjoy soup curry slowly simmered with lamb bones. The signature dish is the “Raw Lamb Tataki Soup Curry.” It’s topped with juicy raw lamb tataki, and the rich lamb bone soup has a deep, savory flavor. The average budget for lunch and dinner is about 1,000–2,000 yen. Now, on the left, you’ll see Odori BISSE. It houses the convenience store “Seicomart,” where you can easily buy Hokkaido products. Seicomart offers bento boxes, sweets, and local specialties made with Hokkaido ingredients, making it perfect for a short stop during sightseeing. Why not enjoy Hokkaido’s flavors here? On the first floor of this location, you’ll find… “KINOTOYA cafe.” KINOTOYA cafe is a popular cafe offering sweets made from Hokkaido ingredients. The interior has a calm atmosphere, allowing you to enjoy a relaxed time. Odori BISSE is perfect for stopping by during sightseeing. Relax and enjoy Hokkaido’s flavors while taking a break. Now, the Chikaho is approaching its end near Odori Park! Next, on the right, is “22% MARKET.” It’s a new-style complex developed by Ishiya Seika, known for “Shiroi Koibito.” It features a grocery, bake shop, and cafe, making it perfect for a quick stop during sightseeing. Among them, the spotlight goes to “Sweets & Café SIROYA.” In this calm and cozy café, you can enjoy authentic sweets. The most recommended item is the visually stunning parfait. Each flavor has a well-thought-out concept, offering a completely different appeal. It’s such a luxurious parfait that you’ll be tempted to try them all. Up to this point is the underground passage called “Chika-ho.” Chika-ho hosts seasonal events and exhibitions, so every time you pass through, there’s a little discovery, making it a space full of entertainment. Next, let’s head to another charming spot in Sapporo’s underground: “Aurora Town.” Here, even more diverse shops and gourmet options await. Aurora Town is an underground street extending roughly east from Odori Subway Station for about 312 meters. Coming from Chika-ho, it enters with a sharp left turn. A point where tourists often get confused is that Aurora Town and the Concourse run parallel to each other. Aurora Town passes directly under Odori Park, and going straight leads to the TV Tower. Meanwhile, the adjacent Concourse serves more as a passageway, with entrances to department stores like Marui Imai along the way. Simply put: Aurora Town = shopping street, Concourse = passageway. From above ground, Aurora Town is below here, and the Concourse is below there. These two connect near the TV Tower at “Kita Kitchen” and “Little Bird Square.” Kita Kitchen is a select shop featuring delicious local foods from across Hokkaido. All items are carefully made by producers who prioritize safety, quality, and effort. It’s perfect not only for souvenirs and gifts, but also popular with locals for everyday shopping. Aurora Town and the Concourse can be a little confusing, but if you’ve watched this video, there’s no need to worry! You can enjoy the underground streets without getting lost. After all the stylish spots, let’s take a short break with a more rustic shop! Before entering Pole Town, near the South-North Line south gate, you’ll notice the aroma of a savory broth… That’s Hinode Soba. It’s considered the king of standing soba, offering the perfect trio: cheap, fast, and delicious! Thick soba noodles in a rich, slightly sweet soy broth— simple yet addictive flavor. Another spot is Juan, a retro Showa-era café near the entrance of Pole Town. With nostalgic chairs and interiors, time seems to flow more slowly. Smoking is allowed here as well. Now, finally, Pole Town. It stretches south from Odori Subway Station toward Susukino, about 400 meters long underground. With restaurants, fashion, miscellaneous goods, and sweets shops, around 120 stores line the street, used daily by locals and tourists alike. Especially in winter, it’s convenient to move without worrying about snow or cold. From Odori to Susukino, you can access it without going above ground—perfect for sightseeing. As a shopping street, it’s also fun to simply walk through. On the left, you’ll see KINOTOYA BAKE. Here, you can get the freshly baked cheese tarts and apple pies, which are usually sold out in a long line at New Chitose Airport, with little waiting. You can also enjoy the premium milk soft serve right away, and take a break in the eat-in area. If you want a quick sweet treat during your trip, this is a perfect stop. Now, we finally enter the Tanukikoji Shopping Street area. Pole Town passes under the 3rd and 4th blocks of Tanukikoji. In other words, walking through the underground passage, you can reach the middle of Tanukikoji without going outside. This area is lined with restaurants, souvenir shops, and cafés. We want tourists to know about this too! Using this passage makes exploring Tanukikoji smooth from the start. It’s also handy to remember the route from Pole Town to Tanukikoji and back underground. With restaurants, drugstores, and everything you need for sightseeing or shopping, you can take a café break or look for souvenirs in specialty stores. Being able to access everything directly from underground is the charm of this Tanukikoji area. Once you exit Tanukikoji, you reach Susukino, Sapporo’s largest entertainment district. Here, gourmet food, shopping, and the neon nightlife come together, showcasing Sapporo’s variety. By going through Pole Town, you can reach Susukino comfortably, no matter the weather! How was it? Knowing the underground route means no more getting lost! You can enjoy both gourmet food and shopping, rain or snow won’t stop you—the charm of Sapporo’s underground streets. Make the underground route your ally, and fully enjoy sightseeing in Sapporo! See you in the next video!
