Located about 750 meters up the slopes of the Azuma Mountain Range, Takayu Onsen boasts nine natural hot springs, producing over 3,000 liters of water per minute . Known as the “Kusazu of Tohoku,” Takayu Onsen boasts a highly acidic, highly medicinal hot spring water, one of the nation’s highest concentrations of sulfurous springs . Travel site Jalan ranked it number one in hot spring satisfaction rankings in 2017, 2021 , and again in 2024. In 2010 , the resort became the first in the Tohoku region to issue a “direct-flowing hot spring declaration,” achieving 100% direct-flowing hot spring water at all facilities. This time, we introduce Adachiya in Takayu Onsen, Fukushima Prefecture. This video explores the history and overview of Adachiya , including its newly renovated large public bath , its wonderful lounge, its multiple rooms, and its hearth-style dinner and breakfast . This video is packed with highlights, so please take your time to enjoy. As you step out of the car, you can smell the sulfur in the air (^^♪ History and Overview Adachiya is located in the heart of Takayu Onsen, a “secret hot spring nearby” about 30 minutes by car from Fukushima city, in the naturally rich Bandai Asahi National Park. The history of Adachiya is intertwined with the history of Takayu Onsen. Yakushido Hall, which preserves the footsteps of Adachiya’s ancestors About 400 years ago, in 1607, a monk appeared in the dream of Sugano Sanshiro (also known as Hannyabo), a retainer of the Date clan, and said, “Leave the warrior class and search for hot springs in the western mountains to serve all people.” After walking through the mountains for several days in search, he came across a desolate place with a large rock. When he tried to remove the rock, he miraculously exerted a vajra power, causing the rock to break apart and hot springs to gush forth, which later became Takayu Onsen. This Sugano Sanshiro (also known as Hannyabo), He is originally from Kohata Village, Adachi County, Oshu (now Kohata, Nihonmatsu City), and is said to be the first owner of Adachiya Ryokan. Surprisingly, the current owner is the 17th generation owner . The main building of Adachiya was completed in 1962, and was renovated in 1998 to its current appearance. A large-scale renovation project will begin in 2023. We will introduce in detail later the new lounge with wonderful hospitality, opened in 2024, and the large public bath, which was renovated in July 2025. The current Adachiya is a two-story building with 18 rooms. It is a secluded hot spring inn for adults only, with a sense of privacy. It is about 25 minutes from Fukushima Nishi IC on the expressway, and about 40 minutes by local bus from JR Fukushima Station. Enter the inn through the entrance with its beautiful rock decorations at the day-use public bath “Attakayu” across the street . Check-in is also done here.Library Lounge Hêtre (Hêtre) is French for beech tree . This lounge opened in March 2024. The unified brown wooden ambiance is very lovely. The furniture and furnishings are also very high-end and luxurious. The fireplace here is actually lit in the winter . Coffee and lemon water are available morning and evening during aperitif time (3:00-6:00). The drinks are mainly draft beer and wine. Non-alcoholic options include red and white wine, and lemonade. Drinks are made to order, creating a luxurious atmosphere, which I’ll introduce later. They also have snacks.^^ The lounge is open from 7:00 AM to 10:00 PM, so you can enjoy them throughout your stay. ^^ The welcome drink upon check-in is a non-alcoholic sparkling drink . You can make reservations for meal times and private baths. After using the free private baths (two open-air baths and one indoor bath), you can also use the other baths if they are available. Check-in is at 3:00 PM, and check-out is at 11:00 AM. The accommodation fee will be explained in the room introduction. We were shown to our room. We enjoyed the lounge, large public bath, dining area, and more. We were given a detailed explanation of the facilities in our room. About the rooms : There are 18 rooms in total, 7 on the first floor and 11 on the second floor. There is no elevator. The rooms are divided into those facing the mountains and those overlooking the hot spring town and Fukushima city. Even with a room-only or breakfast-only plan, you can access the lounge. The standard plan starts at around 24,000 yen, which I think is very reasonable. 👍 Comfort Twin “Rindo” Room Review: Each room is named after a flowering tree. This is the “Rindo” Comfort Twin room. It’s completely new, having been renovated in June 2024 (^^♪ Toothbrushes, razors, combs, and other essential items are provided. DHC cosmetics are available. The toilet has a washlet. There are two windows, and this is the side with a view of Fukushima city, so it looks like you can see the night view too♪ The other window offers a view of the public bath and hot springs. It’s a spacious room with a bed on tatami mats. There are two Simmons semi-double beds. It was incredibly comfortable (^^/ The outlet is the latest model. The room is compatible with USB Type A and Type C. 👍 You can contact the front desk using this smartphone. Balmuda pots, dried fruit from “Le Reve” made with fruit from Fukushima Prefecture, and mineral water in the refrigerator are complimentary. There’s also a desk in the back where you can work. Yukatas can be borrowed from in front of the front desk. WiFi speed was 29Mbps. Mobile phone reception is also available. Comfort Twin “Watasuge” This room, like “Rindo,” was renovated in 2024. As it is the same type of room, it offers views of Fukushima city. The layout is slightly different from “Rindo,” but the minibar and washroom are the same . Comfort Triple “Kikyou” This room also has a bed on tatami mats. Superior “Sakura” is a suite-style room with two Japanese-style rooms. A semi-double bed on tatami mats . There was a washbasin halfway down the hallway. I tried on a samue ^^ The samue was provided in the room. Yukatas are available in the yukata section of the lobby. Samue are free size, but they tend to be a little small (you can borrow larger sizes). There are no buttons on the collar, so be careful if you get drunk. I tried wearing a yukata. ^^ The yukata is free and can be borrowed in the lobby. The color of the haori is the same for men and women. You can also rent colored yukatas . Once you’ve changed, head to the lounge (^^♪ They bring you drinks and light the candles every time♪ Let’s toast with red and white sparkling wine (first time). Introduction to the bath . First, let me introduce the private baths. There are two open-air baths and an indoor bath, but I’ll start with the open-air one. From here, I’ll step outside. There was drinking water. I wonder if it’s spring water? Let’s start with the private bath, “Yakushi no Yu,” Ichinoyu. Ichinoyu: First, I was impressed by the atmosphere of the entire changing room. 😭 I can’t believe this is a private bath . The sense of openness is amazing . Of course, the water is 100% free-flowing from the source. The water is colorless and transparent at the outlet, but when it comes into contact with the air, it turns a beautiful Takayu blue. There is a washing area, and shampoo and other amenities are provided. Next, the private bath, Ninoyu, is on the Fukushima city side. The baths are almost identical, with a wonderful sense of openness . It’s amazing to be able to rent a bath with such a spacious atmosphere and spring quality. The water is murky, so you can’t see underneath, so I recommend using the handrail. Here, the spout is shaped like a wooden tube. The water is even whiter and more beautiful than it appears on screen. The water is overflowing. Next, the private bath: the indoor bath. The private indoor bath is located above the second-floor lounge. Himesa Yuri Private Indoor Bath: Changing Room . There’s a garden-style area and it can be made semi-open-air. The bath is large enough for one or two people, but you can fully enjoy the quality of the spring water. ^^ Introducing the large bath: There are two baths, the East Bath and the West Bath, and the indoor bath and the open-air bath “Taikai no Yu” are connected. Previously, the West Bath, the East Bath, and the large open-air bath “Taikai no Yu” were completely separate, with alternate baths for men and women. pH 2.6 sulfur-containing calcium and aluminum sulfate hot spring. The source temperature is low, resulting in a rich sulfur spring with no added water. A short walk down the corridor to the bath. East Bath: Changing Room. The bathhouse was newly built in 2024, so the entire facility is very new. With 18 rooms, the space is ample. There are partitions, and privacy is also taken into consideration👍 Cosmetics and soaps are DHC shower caps, cotton swabs, combs, razors, etc. Lockers give a sense of security👍 East Bath The moment you step into the indoor bath, you are hit with a strong sulfur smell (unfortunately I can’t tell you about it) Through the large window at the back, you can see a wonderful view of the open-air bath (^^♪ Because it is a new building, the whole thing is new, but the beams and other elements retain their old atmosphere. The bottom is made of stone and is bordered by cypress, giving it a luxurious feel. There is a sturdy handrail. It is difficult to see below, so we recommend entering from this side There is a partition at the washing area, and privacy is also taken into consideration. Air Bath East It was renovated in 2024. The surrounding rocks and walls have been replaced while preserving the scenery. There was a cave in the center^^ The back part was previously connected to West Bath, but it is now completely closed. There are several outlets, and it is clear that there is an abundant amount of hot water Next, West BathNishi no Yu Changing Space This is even newer than the East Bath and was renovated in July 2025. It is almost identical to the East Bath, so we will not go into detail. West Bath Indoor Bath Here you can also see the open-air bath in the back, which is a nice view ♪ Unlike the East Bath, the interior is lined with panels. The bath is also a luxurious bath with a similar cypress border. Atmosphere Bath West Previously, it was for women only and connected to the East Bath at the back, but it is now completely separated. It is a lovely bath that is completely new while retaining the previous view. There are plenty of handrails, so it has been well thought out 👍 After the bath… we headed to the lounge as usual (^^♪ It’s right next to the large public bath, so it feels like a place to relax after a bath 🤗 Cheers (for the second time) My wife had a beer and I had non-alcoholic lemonade, which is not too sweet and highly recommended ^^ It’s time for dinner . We’re at the restaurant “Irori-gawa,” where all the private and semi-private rooms have an irori hearth. The irori hearth and the atmosphere inside are wonderful ♪ There’s a veranda and garden in the front, and you can see the scenery in the back (the view varies depending on the seat) . The drink menu has a full range of sake, wine, craft beer, and more. First, my husband and I have a champagne lounge, so we toast several times ^^ (The lounge has sparkling wine) This is champagne . This time we’re using the irori upgrade plan . I’ll explain what the upgrade is later ♪ [Appetizer] A luxurious dish of tuna and avocado tartare topped with caviar. Basil in the front and mustard sauce in the back. Mustard, mustard! 😅 Caviar on top. Caviar over and over again ^^ It’s so luxurious it melts in your mouth right from the first dish. 😋 And then… the Irori -yaki dishes are served! First up are herring, fried eggplant, fried tofu, and salt-grilled sweetfish fried tofu (with cheese and green onion miso), which are also available in the standard plan. The grilled dishes are served already cooked, and are heated over the hearth. Fried tofu (with cheese and green onion miso) Irori-yaki Herring : Herring has large bones, so be careful ^^ It’s a delicious grilled fish with a strong flavor. The bones were large, but it was well-cooked, so I was able to eat it ^^ Sansho miso is provided for the eggplant. I dipped it in the thick miso ♪ The soft eggplant and sansho miso go perfectly together. The sansho flavor is great! Salt-grilled sweetfish : It’s nice to be able to eat it by the hearth ^^ The saltiness is just right. [Clean Soup] Conger eel with kudzu tataki, water shield and winter melon . The kudzu tataki is on top of the conger eel. The conger eel bones are also well-processed, so you can barely feel them. The kudzu and water shield are very tender. It’s a light and elegant soup. I got a little carried away lol [Sashimi] Abalone with sanbai vinegar, striped jack, and Thai abalone with sanbai vinegar jelly. A dish of abalone, cherry tomatoes, and okra in vinegar jelly. The abalone is tossed in the jelly – the refreshing jelly mixes with the abalone and vegetables for a delicious taste (^^/ Sashimi: striped jack sashimi. My Thai wife’s second drink was a craft beer, Blue Lager, and I had Aizu Takada plum wine sour. We had the Satoyama Iroriyaki grilled dish from the second upgrade plan. It comes with spiny lobster, Kawamata Shamo chicken meatballs, scallops, and lamb! It usually comes with the standard plan, but this time I upgraded to this luxurious plan 🤗 The Kawamata Shamo chicken meatballs felt great when I scooped them up with chopsticks from the rice paddle (^^♪ They were well-seasoned and packed with umami♪ The spiny lobster was really good (^^/ I kept saying spiny lobster lol It was packed with thick meat ^^ They cut it up so it was easy to eat👍 The quality of the hot springs, lounge, and food were all excellent! It was a truly luxurious stay. It ‘s no wonder there are so many repeat customers . I think the price is very reasonable for what you get. The lamb was well-seasoned. The scallops are ready (^^♪ They’re hot and plump, and the meat is thick and fluffy ^^ They’re thoroughly soaked in butter and soy sauce . [Meat dish] 3 kinds of meat assortment This is the main meat dish 🤗 From the left, Wagyu beef fillet, Iberico pork, and Date chicken. It’s a dish that seems familiar but is actually quite rare ^^ [Meal] Fukushima Koshihikari rice, sake lees cloudy soup bowl. Fukushima Koshihikari rice, the flavor of sake lees is strong ♪ The beef is cooked to a medium doneness. It’s tender and flavorful beef. It’s cut into small pieces, so it’s great to eat in one sitting ^^ The pork is fatty and melts in your mouth (^^♪ The chicken is Date chicken . The meat is firm and flavorful . You can see how delicious the beef is by comparison ^^ The overall volume is modest, so it’s nice to be able to eat a variety of dishes 👍 [Dessert] Baumkuchen from Mukaiyama Seisakusho, Caramel popcorn, cheesecake, and a variety of desserts were also served, which was great♪ Sweets lovers rejoice (^^/ This is a Baumkuchen with a rich caramel aroma. Caramel popcorn is also sold at the shop^^ Popcorn is rare^^ Mukaiyama Seisakusho is a confectionery shop that prides itself on its caramel. I was very satisfied with being able to enjoy various dishes. Thank you for the meal. After this… there is a lounge, but it’s not over yet^^ So, I headed to the lounge… The atmosphere in the lounge at night is great. Niida… Zenshu? Corrected lol Bar Time is an after-dinner drink, so we recommended sake. The snacks were also different from the lunchtime ones ^^ The sake was served in a wine glass ♪ After-dinner drink, cheers (I’ve forgotten how many times I’ve had it ^^) It was a slightly sweet, beautiful sake, like wine . It feels like a good day ♪ It’s time for breakfast. Breakfast is served in the same venue as dinner. A breakfast meal was prepared . A luxurious breakfast (^^♪ You can choose between porridge and rice (both are fine ^^) Good morning. I saw a beautiful sunrise today ~ (^^/ I also made a reservation for the private indoor bath at 7 am . Takayu Onsen was great from the morning. You can choose between breakfast at 7:30 am and breakfast at 8:30 am. Let’s eat. The morning drink was apple juice. I’m not sure which spoon to use for the porridge, lol. I decided to use the black one ^^ Just looking at it makes me salivate 🤤 These are sour pickled plums ♪ Next is rice ^^ I have squid and tuna sashimi for breakfast (^^ ♪ I’m thinking about how to eat it… maybe a bowl of rice topped with it would be good 💡 It looks good ♪ The simmered dish soaks in the flavor ^^ First I put it in my mouth… lol This attention to detail is wonderful. Grilled salmon with a rich shio koji flavor . Miso soup with a rich red miso soup color 😋 Sausage with a herbal flavor. What’s that…? Tonburi? The usual firmness check: a firm onsen egg. It’s a curry with plenty of vegetables , with a mild flavor thanks to the sweetness of the vegetables. The salad dressing is French and sesame. The dessert is the work of the sweets guy. lol The yogurt is homemade? It’s very creamy and has peach? It’s perfect for this time of year. 👍 Completely conquered? Finished it all! lol We both had a bowl of rice and a bowl of porridge. 😁 Check-out is at 11:00, so we can take a bath after breakfast. Thank you for the meal . Check- out: Takayu Onsen Adachiya.
