【群馬観光】日本一危険で美しい手筒花火、たぬきで溢れる館林の旅|館林まつり|茂林寺

Hello everyone! On myway back from sightseeing in Fukushima, I’m making a detour since I’ve come all the way to Tohoku. My main purpose is to go to the Tatebayashi Festival. I came to see the traditional hand-held fireworks, which are rarely seen even in Japan. It originated in Aichi Prefecture and is said to have a history of 450 years. The highest temperature on the day was 38.6°C A lot of people came out in the heat to reserve a spot. We also reserved a spot , so we took a break and found a cafe inside the Tatebayashi Cultural Center. Since there are hardly any cafes within walking distance, we decided to have a light meal as well. The Tatebayashi City Hall grounds are decorated with colorful umbrellas. Since I arrived in Tatebayashi, I often saw raccoon ornaments. Morinji Temple in Tatebayashi City is said to be the setting for the story of Bunbuku Chagama. It’s a famous Japanese folk tale that has been passed down since ancient times. It’s so hot I want to take a dip in the water. I just want to cool my feet. It feels nice! I think I’ll rent a bicycle from the hotel and go to Morinji Temple. As usual, I have no plans. I arrived at the hotel where I’ll be staying. Tatebayashi City offers free rental bicycles called “ponchari.” Thankfully, I was able to rent one by phone on the day! It’s great that we can rent it at the hotel. The breeze is pleasant when we arrive! Morinji Temple, famous for its Bunpuku Chagama, is lined with 21 Shigaraki-yaki raccoon dog statues along the temple approach, which was founded in 1426. Raccoons are believed to bring prosperity to business and good fortune. I came here during the day, which was great, but they seem a little scary when you come to see them in the evening. Looking at them like this, the raccoons are looking up. I wonder if they’re doing their best in the heat without looking down. I continue my journey, taking appropriate rests. I’ve returned to the hotel, and there’s another raccoon here… I’ve sweated too much from cycling, so I’ll change clothes and head to the venue! At Shironuma in Tatebayashi, you can also take a sightseeing boat tour of the lotus flowers in the summer. The tour is only available in the morning, so I gave up this time. Arrived at the venue!! The fireworks start from 7:30pm to 8:30pm, and even though it’s more than an hour before, many people are already there with their cameras ready. I was feeling a bit hungry, so I decided to have some buttered potatoes. I like the food stalls because they give off a festival vibe and they look delicious. The traditional “hand-held fireworks” originated in the eastern Mikawa region of Aichi Prefecture. Hand-held fireworks are filled with gunpowder in a bamboo tube. The fireworks are held by the fireworks’ host and blown straight up into the air, creating a tense atmosphere. You can feel the heat of the gunpowder and the sound of the explosion up close, and it’s quite an impressive sight. Hand-held fireworks can be as heavy as 100cm in total weight. The person lifting the 2kg fire had to patiently endure the hot sparks. It was great to have the craftsman explain the process beforehand. It was my first time watching, so I was grateful. I was also able to see the fireworks of the “Tatebayashi Festival,” which has been held since 1999. Finally , the hand-held fireworks began . The pillar of fire shot up about 10m straight up. At the end, the flames and sound called “hane” erupted at our feet. I had always wanted to see such magnificent fireworks, so I’m glad I came . Did everyone go to see fireworks this summer? It makes me want to go see the real hand-held fireworks in Toyohashi. Thank you for watching.

  1. Another beautifully filmed video! Thanks for letting us be part of this festival. I really love seeing places in Japan that are off the usual tourist path.
