淡路島旅記|悠閒藍海・陽光島嶼|洋蔥的無限可能
Today we’re driving from Kobe to Awaji Island via the Akashi Kaikyo Bridge . After entering Awaji Island, we arrived at the Awaji Expressway Service Area (downbound lane). Since it was too crowded indoors, we headed outside. This service area offers stunning views of the azure blue of Osaka Bay, the distant view of Kobe City, and the majestic Akashi Kaikyo Bridge. If the weather isn’t too hot, it’s a great place to enjoy a cup of coffee and the view. The rest area is large, with a wide selection of food and souvenirs. The Ferris wheel is a special attraction. We’re on to our next destination, A HAPPY PANCAKE. The main store of Happiness Pancakes is located at Awaji Island Terrace. It’s been about 30 minutes since the store opened, and there are already many people queuing up. This store has many beautiful photo spots, such as the Happiness Bell . After we lined up, there was another long line behind us. Here, you first choose a seat and then order at the self-service ordering machine. We chose a seat outside, which is a beautiful photo spot. The coffee was served first. The pancakes were topped with cream, and the one next to it was fresh cream that we purchased separately. The pancakes have a chewy texture . We think the cream tastes a bit heavy, and it tastes better with fresh cream. Next, we will meet up with friends on Awaji Island. This is Sumoto Nanachome Shopping Street. Friends brought us here to learn about the “mizuhiki” culture of Awaji Island. Mizuhiki is a traditional Japanese knot, often used to decorate gifts such as red and white envelopes. The store displays various exquisite works made with mizuhiki. The owner told us The basic way to tie a mizuhiki is the Awaji knot, and the resulting knot is shaped like a heart, a beautiful piece. Next, we visited the Sumoto Library. This red brick building, built during the Meiji period, was formerly the second spinning mill of the Kanebo Sumoto Works. Designated a “Modernization Industrial Heritage,” it’s a significant historical landmark in Sumoto. In front of the library is the Sumoto Citizen Square, the hometown of Yuji Horii, the creator of the Dragon Quest series. The square features a Dragon Quest monument. Passing by are vast onion fields. Awaji Island is renowned as Japan’s onion capital. The structures in the fields are used to hang harvested onions for ventilation and drying to prevent rotting. We arrived at the Uzumaki-no-Oka Onaruto Bridge Memorial Hall. What a cute car! There’s a giant onion in the back. In front of us is the Onaruto Bridge, which connects Shikoku. What a huge onion! This giant onion is truly eye-catching. The hall sells a variety of Awaji Island specialties, especially onion-related goods. There’s even an onion scooping machine! Next we came to the roadside rest stop “Uzumachi Terrace”. This is a temporary business location during the renovation of the original roadside rest stop “Uzushio”. It is expected to reopen at the original roadside rest stop in October 2025. It is closer to Shikoku. The next morning, we drove across the sea and came to Tokushima City to taste Shikoku’s udon noodles. The weather suddenly changed and the store we wanted to go to was closed. We randomly found an udon restaurant. The noodles were chewy, smooth and delicious! On the way back to Awaji Island, I was attracted by the big sweet potatoes and came in to take a look. This is the roadside rest stop “KURUKURUNARUTO”. The bread made with sweet potatoes here seems to be very popular. On the way to the next attraction , Onuroto Bridge, the wind on the bridge is very strong. The beautiful clear sea view . The island in front is a flying island and there is a highway above. Unfortunately, it is not the time for whirlpools to appear . Let’s go for lunch~ We came to the Taiwanese restaurant “Tainanjia” on Awaji Island. There are several cute goats in the courtyard. The owner couple is very hospitable. There are some Taiwan-related books on display in the store. The authentic Taiwanese food is delicious. Before leaving Awaji Island, we drove into the Awaji Expressway Rest Stop (upbound line). There is no Ferris wheel in this rest area, but there are many people. It has the same beautiful and wide scenery. I hope you like this sharing.
