道の駅あいの土山(滋賀県甲賀市)リニューアルで魅力UP!滋賀の新しい観光スポット 【道の駅めぐり】
Today, I’m heading to a roadside station in Shiga Prefecture. Only one Michi-no-Eki remains in Shiga. This will be the last roadside station in Shiga Prefecture. That means I’ll have completed all the roadside stations in the Kinki region. The roadside station I’m heading to now is located in Tsuchiyama, Koka City, Shiga Prefecture. It’s called Michi-no-Eki Aino-Tsuchiyama. This roadside station has been renovated. On August 1st, it had its grand reopening. It’s been less than a month since the reopening. I once visited the old version right before the shop closed for the day. Compared to that time, Aino-Tsuchiyama seems to have become a completely different roadside station. I’m excited to see it now. Right now, I’m driving on the Meishin Expressway. Michi-no-Eki Aino-Tsuchiyama is located along National Route 1. You can reach it just by driving on Route 1, but from Osaka it takes too long, so I’m using the expressway to get there more quickly. From here… how far was it again? I’ll be taking the expressway to the Koka-Tsuchiyama IC. The roadside station should be very close to the interchange. So this time, I’ll use the expressway all the way. That’s the plan. I’ve just passed Kyoto Minami, and from here I’ll head toward the Shin-Meishin Expressway. For my upcoming Michi-no-Eki trips, I’d like to visit stations in other prefectures too. In Wakayama Prefecture, there are still 2 or 3 left. Two in Wakayama, and one in Hyogo that I haven’t properly visited. Some shops were closed when I went, so I couldn’t enter. I’d like to go back to those places again. For roadside stations where I couldn’t shop, I plan to revisit. And in other prefectures, if I get the chance, I’d like to go as well. It’s hard to do concentrated Michi-no-Eki trips, since with my work I can only take day trips. So I want to start with places that are easy to reach from Osaka. Although there aren’t many. Maybe Okayama, for example. Maybe Okayama or Mie. Or perhaps Tottori… It might be possible to reach them even on a day trip. If I could visit two or three roadside stations, that would already feel like plenty. I’d like to make time to try trips like that too. From here, I’ll get back on the Shin-Meishin Expressway. I’ve been driving along the Shin-Meishin Expressway, and soon I’ll reach the Koka-Tsuchiyama Interchange. According to the car navigation system, it’s about 4 minutes away. The distance to the Koka-Tsuchiyama IC is… just 1 km left. Once I exit at Koka-Tsuchiyama IC, the roadside station should be right nearby. Here I am, exiting at Koka-Tsuchiyama IC. Coming down from the Shin-Meishin Expressway, the road connects directly to Route 1. I’ll turn right at this intersection. And from here, it’s about 3 km to reach the roadside station. There’s a lot of traffic here, and since the station has just reopened, it might be crowded. I avoided the summer vacation rush though. On the left, you can see the Heisei Ban-Nin-To. It’s said to be the largest natural stone lantern in Japan, and is a symbol of the old Tsuchiyama post town. Driving along Route 1 toward Mie, the roadside station should be on the right. There it is. Such a striking building— it looks completely different from my last visit. Let’s eat! The matcha aroma and slight bitterness are wonderful. You can choose between a cup or a cone. The subtle sweetness lets you enjoy the matcha flavor more. Highly recommended. This is a shrine dedicated to Sakanoue no Tamuramaro. Legend says he defeated an ogre at Suzuka Pass that was tormenting the people. He is worshipped as a god who wards off evil. People cast beans into the Mitarai River to drive away misfortune. I’ll walk around the area a little more. Tamura Shrine is located right in front of the roadside station. Kanigasaka Ame is a charm candy tied to the giant crab legend. It’s made by slowly boiling malt syrup, shaped into discs resembling a crab’s shell. Even today, it’s still handmade and rare. Its simple sweetness soothes the weariness of travel. Next, I’ll walk through Tsuchiyama-juku on the old Tokaido road. Now I’ll have a meal at Okowaya Ikuno inside the roadside station. I wanted to try the Three Tawara Set Meal, but it sold out quickly, and was already gone. So instead, I ordered the Tsuchiyama Ceramic Plate Soba. It’s cha-soba, also called Tsuchiyama Touban Soba. It’s served on ceramic plates made in Shigaraki. The noodles are grilled until crisp, and when dipped into warm broth, they give off a subtle tea aroma and taste delicious. That hint of tea fragrance makes it really tasty. The combination of beef shigure and green onion was a perfect match. Inside the shop, you can sample tea for free. It’s set up at the end of the Tsuchiyama Chabo store. Tsuchiyama is famous for tea. In the sales area, you’ll find many varieties of Tsuchiyama tea. To enjoy Tsuchiyama tea even more, we stopped by Tsuchiyama Chabo and bought a matcha latte and a hojicha latte. That concludes my visit to Michi-no-Eki Aino-Tsuchiyama. It reopened on August 1st, and the facility is now very beautiful. Since it’s a newly renovated roadside station, I arrived around 10 a.m., and now it’s about 3 p.m.… Almost 3 o’clock now. During that time, it was constantly crowded—even on a weekday. Anything popular sold out right away… That was the situation. There were lots of recommended products, and I enjoyed ice cream, cha-soba, and this hojicha latte. Since Tsuchiyama is known for tea, I bought this drink to try. The roasted tea aroma is so fragrant, and it pairs perfectly with the sweetness of the milk. It’s really delicious, so I’d recommend coming here just like visiting a café. The matcha soft serve was also very good, and I wish I could’ve tried the okowa rice from the shop. Be sure to try their okowa too. That wraps up my visit to Michi-no-Eki Aino-Tsuchiyama. Since I only went to one station today, I was able to enjoy some sightseeing nearby while spending time at the roadside station. I stayed mostly at the station itself, but if you want to make a full day of it, this roadside station has enough to enjoy all day. Sightseeing, meals, tea, and soft serve ice cream— that’s how I spent my time here. Since it has just reopened, the facilities are all brand new. The building design is also very unique. I highly recommend visiting. I didn’t buy it this time, but there’s a uirou sweet made with Tsuchiyama tea that’s sold as an original product of this roadside station. Be sure to try that as well. Today wasn’t really a Michi-no-Eki tour— I only visited one station. Spending time leisurely like this feels more relaxed. Usually, I visit up to five stations in a single day, so the time I can spend at each one is limited. This time, I was able to take my time at one place, and it was really enjoyable. It’s fun to try sightseeing with a roadside station as the main focus too.
