[Music] Lynn and Paul’s Excellent Adventure, a 4-year voyage while living on a cruise ship. Well, today we’re in Kochi, Japan, exploring one of the last original castles in the country, Kochi Castle. As we arrived, we were greeted with smiles and waving flags. A warm welcome here in Gochi. You can really feel the excitement the moment you step off the ship. And after we did step off the ship, we hopped in a cab and wound our way through Coochi’s streets. It was a short ride and soon appeared the castle above the trees. Like most temples and castles here in Japan, there were stairs and a lot of them. On the climb up, we found two fascinating monuments. The bronze horse and rider is Yamachi Chio and her horse Kagabi Courage. And just ahead, this egg-shaped stone honors Kasunoki Masoki, a legendary samurai figure. Every step you took felt like you’re walking deeper into history. Kochi Castle is a edeto period Japanese castle in the city of Kochi. It is located at the Odoka hill at the center of Kochi city which in turn is located at the center of Kochi plain the most prosperous area of the former Tossa province on the island of Shakuku from601 to 1871. It was a center of the Tossa domain ruled by the Tosima Yamachi clan. The castle site has been protected as a national historic site since 1959. [Music] Inside the castle, the climb began four flights of steep, narrow wooden stairs. They don’t make castles easy to conquer, do they? But it was worth it. The view from the top absolutely breathtaking. mountains, the city, even the ocean. You can imagine samurai warriors watching from here centuries ago, protecting the land. Visiting Kochi Castle was like stepping back in time. The history and the beauty in every stone. It’s one of Japan’s few remaining original castles and unforgettable to see. So today in Coochi, we’re at the Katsuhurama Aquarium, right? Right off of Roya Point. And it’s actually a whole uh park here. I mean the ocean views. We’re at the part before you go into the aquarium. They’ve got a whole beach. It’s just beautiful. Looks down over this bay. They have a prominade. They have a museum, the aquarium, some restaurants. It’s And it’s all in these beautiful trees. It’s nice over here. This is literally across just we can see the ship. We’re just across from the ship. Yeah. It was a 10-minute taxi ride. Yeah. So, it was real easy to get here. It’s away from the city of Kochi itself and it might be one of those things that if you’re coming to Coochi, you might not even realize it’s here. So, it’s worth coming to this park. Even if you don’t go to the aquarium, it’s quite beautiful. But we’ll show you the aquarium. Okay, Lyn, we are in the aquarium. Cute little aquarium. It’s, you know, not probably the fanciest. I think the one in Osaka uh people said was really really good some of our other shipmates. So we missed that one. See all the fish here? These are freshwater fish. They are freshwater fish. Aren’t they pretty? They’re all they’re black or dark speckled. Really interesting. And isn’t this pretty? Just this little bridge and rock. I mean it’s just landscaped really pretty. Yeah, it’s a it’s a cute aquarium. It really is. It was uh 1,200 yen to get in for adults, so fairly reasonable. We’ll see what they have here inside. [Music] Heat. Heat. N. [Music] [Applause] [Music] Heat. Heat. [Music] [Applause] a stingray. Look at this guy. Look at this guy. [Music] Heat. Heat. [Music] Heat. [Music] Heat. Heat. Heat. [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Music] [Music] only a Little fish. A nugget. A nugget. [Music] Okay, Lyn. This is called Dr. Fish. This is like uh fish in your hands for medicinal purposes. They come around your hands. So, go ahead. Show how it is. Oh, they like they’re probably like eating all the bugs off of you. Put your fingers out. Put your fingers down. How’s it feeling? Pickles. Oh, what about first aquarium? You’ve been able to do this, right? This is a weird feeling. What do you think? This is a very weird feeling. Supposed to be medicinal, though, isn’t it? Yeah. Is that the idea? Well, it says right there. It has a peeling effect that absorbs dead skin cells and makes the skin clean. Feels weird. It feels like they’re vibrating on you. Does it? Well, you can tell they’re kind of nibbling your dead skin or whatever it is off of you. I guess I didn’t know I had that much dead skin. We are done at the aquarium. You got to uh get your uh hands clean with those fish. That was wonderful. That was very weird. It was a It was a neat aquarium because they really let you get up close to the animals and they let you feed the animals. You know, for 100 yen, you could feed fish to the different We fed fish or little pellets to the turtles and we fed a fish to the um seals. Pretty good. But as you can tell, it’s time for an ice cream break. It’s It’s amazing the way in Japan, they like to package everything. You don’t just get an ice cream cone and that’s it. They’re all Yeah. You better eat yours. But they’re like all packaged. What do you do? You just pop this off and then you flavor it is though. It’s not vanilla. No, it’s vanilla. Like it’s more ice. It’s like shaved ice. What is that flavor? This is um pinina colada I think. Wow. I would tell you if it was pin colada cuz I can’t eat pin colada. So, but we’ll see if we can enjoy these. And then we’re going to go look at a point over on the rocks here off of the shore. That looks pretty cool. So, this is the first Japanese beach we’ve actually been to just outside of the aquarium. People walking on the beach. We’re going to see a beach in a couple more stops that uh is more of a public type beach as we’ve we kind of reached southern Japan and I think it’s going to be more beach friendly. It’s where a lot of Japanese people go to vacation so forth. But as you can see, this is such a pretty point. You see the stairs that go up there to the point there on the rocks. It’s just really pretty. The rock formations here on the on the beach area are beautiful as well. And the water just sounds so nice. Yeah, just kind of just hitting the shoreline. I love that sound. So, kind of a fun place to go. So, if you make it out here to Coochi, uh this is one of those places that you probably want to go. If you look behind us here, you can go around. Unfortunately, that’s not our ship. No, our ship is behind those trees. Yeah, there’s two ports. Yeah, that’s a celebrity ship there. I think that’s the one that came in this morning, but we’re in a port that’s literally right over the hill. We’ll probably be able to see it from up at the top of the I bet we will. I bet we will. Good. Well, let’s head there. [Music] There it is. [Music] So, we made it to the lookout point. This little guide here tells you what’s what direction. That’s funny. They show Washington DC and London, Beijing. Taipei is off this direction. We’re going there. So, we’re going there very soon. Yeah. Came from Tokyo, Osaka. Uh-huh. Uh we’ll also be going kind of that way towards um South Korea here in a another week. Yes, next week we’ll be in South Korea. Well, I’m going to head up this last pinnacle here. We’ll see if we see our ship. See if we can see it from up here. So, this is the very top part. And yes, indeed, the Odyssey. There’s the Odyssey docked over there. That’s our home. So, you can swim over there. You could tell how far we had to go all the way out and back around to get over here. It was a seven or eight minute car ride, I think. Maybe 10 minutes at the most. It’s um too bad they don’t have like a little sea taxi or or even a walkway along there. But it’s kind of an industrial park. Be pretty. Yeah, it’s kind of an industrial type area. So that’s probably why they don’t. Hi home. [Music] [Music] having some lunch. A little lunch break. That’s pretty good. I’m having steak and shrimp. Yep. I’m having a steak by itself. So, we’ll see how it is. It looks delicious, though. We need a little break. Get our protein up. You didn’t have breakfast, so you needed the uh So, we are back to the ship now, Lynn. Home again. We are. And what a great welcoming they gave us when we got here. And they had vendors set up here yesterday. We bought some u lemon saki lour is what they showed it as. Uhhuh. It was almost like a lemon cello, I would guess. Yeah. a little but had that kind of wine taste to it like sake is. Yeah. Um but it was pretty good. We enjoyed it. But we’ve had a wonderful time in Coochi. Two days. I’m glad we got two days. So we got to do a lot. We’re going to be uh heading off to Hiroshima next. Not even a day between. We’ll be there tomorrow. Yeah, that will be a a really um you’ll have to stay tuned for that one because that’s going to be a great um great excursion that we’re going on. Uh it’s with our global harmony. We’ll tell you more about that while we’re in Hiroshima. We’re going to go to the peace memorial. Uh and there’ll be a ceremony there. So, you’ll want to stay tuned for that or tune in to that one, I guess. Isn’t it? Isn’t that the way I should say it? Stay tuned. Stay tuned. Stairs are ahead, so we’ll head on up. [Music]
