リエズ Riez ・南フランスの中世の街並みが残る美しい村 / 古代ローマ時代から続く町 / プロヴァンス / かわいい猫 / Beautiful village in Southern France
Hello everyone! This is Sayaka from quatre saisons. In May 2024, I visited Riez, a village near Valensole famous for its lavender, with my husband Matthieu. As rain looked likely, we hurried to explore the village. First, we entered the cathedral. In the 14th century, the Bishop of Riez authorized the demolition of the original cathedral and baptistery, built in the early Christian era. The materials from this demolition were reused to construct the new cathedral at the end of the 15th century. On the night of 18th May 1842, part of the nave collapsed. Then, in October 1952, the ceiling collapsed again, and it was restored. The paintings, bronze statues, and murals adorning this cathedral were all truly magnificent. Now, we’ll take a stroll through the village. First, let’s head right. The time for lunch had passed, so the restaurant service had ended, and it was very quiet. This village is close to the Valensole Plateau. This used to be a cinema, didn’t it? It’s a very old-looking building. The honey shop is lovely. The colours of the buildings in this village are so colourful and very charming. The village of Riez is an ancient Roman town with a rich history. Founded in the 1st century, it was the oldest ancient city in the department and was therefore also called ‘Riez la Romaine’. Riez became an important city with the establishment of a bishopric. In the 5th century, a baptistery and cathedral were built upon the ruins of Roman baths. Around the 7th to 8th centuries, the inhabitants settled atop the hill of Saint-Maxime. When a fortress was constructed there, the bishopric was transferred to this new location. From the 12th century onwards, people began living at the foot of the hill, forming the origin of Riez’s old town. Several mansions built between the 15th and 17th centuries remain in the old town. The presence of the bishop and his court fostered the development of commerce and crafts. However, after the bishopric was abolished during the French Revolution, the town gradually lost its momentum. The buildings look very old indeed. We decided to proceed a little further before heading towards the hill. Let’s go right. This is a fountain, isn’t it? It’s inscribed with the year 1951. Water was flowing from the mouth of the stone face statue. The face is slightly crumbling. The covered passageway beneath these houses is called an “Andron”, apparently a common type of passageway in medieval times. Matthieu says streets like this seem to have been influenced by Italy. This apartment building appears to have been constructed quite some time ago, and one can sense its history. There was food and water for cats here. Is this cinema the one we passed earlier? This is the Hôtel de Mazan, a mansion built in 1523, said to have a staircase with splendid stucco decoration. (We couldn’t visit inside.) Here too, the word “Miel” is visible, so perhaps it was once a honey shop? We’ll also go over to the left side later. This passageway also had an andron. Does this mean it was built in the 11th century? Below, it appears to say 1964. Thunder can be heard. The castle walls are visible atop San Maxim Hill, so we shall climb higher. Though damaged, they are very impressive ramparts. The castle walls visible from the stairs earlier appeared to be at the rear of this house. We gradually drew nearer to the clock tower. This clock tower is now home to birds, isn’t it? The clock tower is one of the last remaining relics of the 14th-century walls that once encircled the town of Riez, having been built in the 16th century. There were two cats. Unfortunately, they showed no interest in us. We continued climbing further upwards. This is a cemetery. We decided to go to the cemetery briefly and see the view from above. The view from here was good, but the trees obstructed it somewhat. The view was better from the steps leading up to the cemetery. A different cat from the one earlier was sitting at the front of this house. The descent was slippery and dangerous, so we walked carefully. We spotted a gate ahead, so we decided to head down. There’s a cat. There are two! This one looks young. This cat seems quite used to people. Perhaps they thought it might rain? Both hid under a car. This cat seems bothered by the nearby dog. Then Matthieu met a dog. It seemed to be about to go for a walk and was waiting for his owner. The cat seems to be heading to the same place. The cat was on its way home, then. He met another cat, but she ran off straight away. This time, the black cat seemed to be hurrying somewhere. Mind the cars! This gate, Porte Saint Sols, is one of two entrances to the old town of Riez. It’s also one of the last remaining relics of the 14th-century city walls. This also appears to be a honey shop. Riez has quite a few honey shops, doesn’t it! We didn’t go this time, but apparently just a 5-minute walk from the centre are Roman columns, a baptistery, and the remains of an early Christian cathedral. We definitely want to revisit! Just as we got back to the car park, it started raining! We were very lucky the rain only started after we’d finished our walk in Riez. Right then, we’re heading home! Thank you for watching the video right to the end again. See you in the next one!
