Hello everyone. Welcome to OSHIRO. Today, we’re back on a castle tour. This time, we’re visiting Kamioka Castle in Hida City, Gifu Prefecture. This castle actually has several other names. So, right away, here’s a question: Which of these is not another name for Kamioka Castle? 1. Higashimachi Castle 2. Nojiri Castle 3. Okino Castle 4. Hakute Castle The answer is number 4, “Hakute Castle.” Hakute Castle is the castle where Liu Bei Xuande died in the Chinese Romance of the Three Kingdoms. Famous for its beautiful riverfront location, its name later became another name for Inuyama Castle in Aichi Prefecture. Let’s take another look at Kamioka Castle. Kamioka Castle is the only flatland castle in Hida City. Its location is crucial, as it was built at a strategic transportation hub overlooking the Etchu Kaido, which connects Hida and Etchu, and the Kamidakamichi, which continues to Shinshu. The main enclosure is approximately 50 square meters. The west side is protected by a cliff, and the remaining three sides are fortified by moats. This castle first appeared in history during the Sengoku period. It is said that when Takeda Shingen of Kai invaded Etchu, his senior vassal, Yamagata Masakage, ordered the Ema clan of Hida to build it. Yamagata Masakage, a fierce warrior who led the red-armored army and one of the Takeda’s 24 generals, was killed by the gunfire of the Oda-Tokugawa allied forces at the Battle of Nagashino after Shingen’s death. Afterward, Ema clan vassal Kawakami Lieutenant Commander defended the castle. The Ema clan built a network of subsidiary castles in the mountains, including Takahara Suwa Castle, Hora Castle, Anjo Castle, Terabayashi Castle, Onishiro Castle, Shiritaka Castle, Tengen Castle, and Hongo Castle. Kamioka Castle, also known as Higashimachi Castle, is one of these. However, times were changing dramatically. The head of the family, Ema Terumori, was killed in battle against Miki Mototsuna in southern Hida. Furthermore, heavy snowfall left the defenses weak, allowing the main castle, Takahara Suwa Castle, to be captured, and the Ema clan was wiped out. Having defeated the Ema clan, the Miki clan advanced into northern Hida, and just when it seemed they might finally take control of the entire Hida province, a new powerful force appeared. His name was Kanamori Nagachika. In 1585, under the orders of Toyotomi Hideyoshi, he invaded Hida. First, he killed the guardian, Anenokoji Yoritsuna, and then forced the Miki clan to surrender, seizing control of the entire Hida region. At this time, Kamioka Castle also came under the control of the Kanamori clan, and their vassal, Yamada Kojuro, is said to have become the castle’s lord. However, Kamioka Castle, which was at the mercy of the turbulent Sengoku period, was abandoned in 1614 (Genwa 1) during the Edo period due to the One Castle per Province Order. The moats and earthen ramparts were converted into farmland, and most of the remains of its former glory have been lost. The castle tower we see today is a replica built during the Showa period. Its exterior is modeled after Maruoka Castle and Inuyama Castle, and it was rebuilt on the site of the original tower base. Historical and mining documents are displayed inside, making it a place of learning for the local community. Kamioka Castle stood at a strategic transportation hub, overseeing the struggle for supremacy in Hida. Its short history can be said to be a microcosm of the Sengoku period. Thank you for watching until the end. If you enjoyed this video , please subscribe and rate it. Next time, we’ll head to the tropical island of Kagoshima Castle. Stay tuned!
