【大分】ここ知ってる?九州の天領 日田市は街も人も熱かった!行ってよかった豆田町商店街と日田祇園祭

Hello, this is Dora Travel. This time, we’re in Oita Prefecture’s Hita City, Japan’s hottest town, for the hottest festival in Japan, the Hita Gion Festival. We’ll see the group face-showing ceremony and and stroll through “Mamedacho,” a district richly preserving the atmosphere of the Edo period. What kind of journey will this be? Let’s enjoy it! Hita City, located in the northwestern part of Oita Prefecture, on the border with Fukuoka Prefecture. This town has prospered since the Edo period and is called the Little Kyoto of Kyushu. This time, we visited in July The season when the Hita Gion Festival, boasting a history of about 300 years, reaches its peak excitement Temperatures also hit their peak every year, constantly battling neighboring Kurume City for the top spot in heat. The history, the town, and the people are all fiery. The group parade will be held in front of Hita Station. The road we’re currently running on will be closed to traffic. This is the closest hotel. If possible, choosing this hotel is best. Here it is. It had been fully booked, but it seems a cancellation came up. One room opened up, so I booked it immediately. What I realized after going there is that I recommend checking into a hotel near the station early. First, it gives you plenty of time. After the festival ends, you won’t have to walk at all. Plus— you can get tickets for the paid viewing seats earlier. Here’s the room. You can’t hear any noise from outside at all. The bathroom is pretty standard. First thing to eat when you come to Hita City Hita Yakisoba In past videos, I’ve visited two places. For the third, I chose “Daigaku-ken” behind the station. A super-established shop, half a century since its founding. The interior feels like time has stopped. I hope it stays this way forever. The sound of the griddle. The aroma of seared sauce, and the sound of the TV Deliciousness is guaranteed even before you take a bite Not a mug, but bottled beer. Nice The firm texture with deep grill marks and the sweet, rich sauce are absolutely fantastic The soup had a light tonkotsu flavor Hita yakisoba and beer are the best on a hot summer day. It was delicious. Sometimes I get a really strong craving for Hita yakisoba. The venue in front of the station was already packed with people. It felt stiflingly hot, like a room with all the windows shut. I spotted what looked like paid viewing seats. I asked a staff member at the venue. They told me tickets are sold next to Hita Station. I buy them immediately. Limited to 100 tickets, cost is 5000 yen per person. If canceled due to bad weather, the money will be refunded. I’m standing in line without knowing anything at all. All seats are unreserved. You can sit freely in the order you arrive. We were able to enter at 5 PM. Waiting in line was the right choice. After sitting down, you can freely go in and out, and temporarily return to the neighboring hotel. Various souvenirs. We could leisurely watch the impressive sight of the mountain floats turning right before our eyes and the simultaneous lighting of the lanterns from the front. I’m glad we bought these seats. Good morning. The next morning, we headed to “Mameda Town.” This is a historic townscape preservation district that still retains the atmosphere of its prosperous Edo period. There were both paid and free parking lots. Since we planned to visit “Senya,” a famous Hita Mabushi restaurant, we chose this parking lot. At “Senya,” writing your name before opening allowed us to enter the moment it opened. Before opening, I bought sake at “Kuncho Shuzo”. When I returned to the restaurant, I was shocked by the crowd. It’s an incredibly popular place. The inside is way bigger than you can imagine. The food we ordered came out right away. It was delicious. Everything from the taste to the service was refined. I recommend writing your name down before opening. Next stop was “Asahi Manju” A long-established Japanese confectionery shop dating back to the Edo period. Their chestnut buckwheat manju is apparently the most popular item. The manju contained a whole chestnut and was fluffy and sweet. Going clockwise from “Senya” seems like an efficient route. Koga Clinic is a restored 1932 Western-style building. Free admission. The sky looks beautiful, doesn’t it? Exactly! There are hardly any power lines. There’s another old building over here too. The second historical exchange building is the “Funatsu” Dental Clinic. It was converted into a dental clinic in 1928, and the atmosphere of that era remains intact. The highlight is on the second floor. Dental chairs and valuable medical instruments You can almost hear the distinctive high-pitched whine of the air turbine and the sound of teeth being drilled Since tours are free, why not pay a visit? When it comes to Japan’s finest miso, look no further than Hita Shoyu, founded 170 years ago. If you come to Hita, this is a shop you should definitely stop by. See how the streets and shops have remained largely unchanged. Comparing it to photos from the 1940s Hita Shoyu displays 4,000 “Hina Dolls” Don’t forget the Hina Doll Museum Even if you say you’re not interested in hina dolls, you might like them once you see them I don’t know much about hina dolls Beautifully displayed hina dolls You can feel the richness of the culture rooted in this land In February and March the Hita Tenryo Hina Festival is held It’s amazing they gathered so many We’ve returned to the starting point, “Kuncho Sake Brewery.” There was a cafe in front of the brewery. They offer many unique menu items only possible at a sake brewery, utilizing koji mold and sake lees. It was delicious. Every menu item looked delicious, the staff were attentive, and it’s a very comfortable place to be. Seeing yesterday’s Hita Gion and today’s shop made me realize something. I felt the pride of the artisans and townspeople working here, and their passion for cherishing this town. I truly understood that this isn’t just a collection of old buildings, but a living cultural heritage. I’m glad I came, and I’m sure everyone else feels the same way—they’ll want to come back again. We still have time to spare. It’s not on the schedule, but let’s drive to the village of Onta ware. It’s about a 20-minute drive from here. Let’s take a little stroll. It was getting late in the afternoon and it was raining. Most of the kilns were closed, but I hope you can at least get a sense of the atmosphere. This is a communal climbing kiln It’s still in use today The techniques are passed down from parent to child— It’s a hereditary system passed down to one child only. The entire family works together making pottery. Okano ware plates are enchanted. Whether you place grilled fish, salad, sashimi, or pasta on them, it looks like a professional made it, giving you the illusion your skills have improved. We’ve arrived at the Okano-yaki Ceramic Museum. It explains the history and details of Okano-yaki pottery. You absolutely have to see this place. I didn’t know any of this before. Well, what did you think? I hope the charm of Hita City came through and that this serves as a helpful reference for your travels. It’s about time. I think I’ll head out on my journey. For example, from Beppu through Taketa to Aso, From Kure to Onomichi, from Saga City through Arao to Kumamoto City I’m considering Izumo to Matsue. Please look forward to it. Well then, let’s meet on the next journey. See you later.
