【北陸の旅’25春③】金沢城→瑞泉寺×絶品グルメ|宝達山の絶景も
cLeYon’s Journey Kanazawa Castle → Zuisenji: History & Food on the Final Day in Hokuriku Touring Japan by Camper Van Travel Memory Notes If you’ve got a moment, please enjoy Good morning—this is cLeYon. The weather’s great today—perfect for a stroll So I decided to head to Kanazawa Castle And I’m back on the move toward downtown Kanazawa I arrived at the “Kanaya Demaru Ruins” From here I’ll enter Kanazawa Castle through the “Nezumitamon Entrance” Nezumitamon Gate and the “Nezumitamon Bridge” that leads to it Both were reconstructed in 2020 The road below used to be a moat back in the day The hallmark of Nezumitamon is this “black namako wall” A special namako wall with black plastered joints They say there’s nothing quite like it elsewhere Right after you go in, what spreads out before you is The “Gyokusen’inmaru Garden” A stunning garden with dramatic elevation changes The nighttime illuminations look beautiful, too I found a guide to the stone walls Kanazawa Castle has a rich variety of stone walls And it’s fun to walk around comparing the differences Next, across “Gokurakubashi Bridge” to the “Sanjikken Nagaya” The “Sanjikken Nagaya” is designated an Important Cultural Property It’s a building surviving from the Edo period With a history as a dried-rice (preserved food) storehouse and an armory On weekends and holidays outside winter You can go inside for a tour The stone wall here uses a technique called “kinba-torinokoshi-zumi” The precision of the joints and the fine edging work It’s amazing they were doing this in the Edo period Next up are the three grand gates known collectively as the “Three Grand Gates” We’ll see the three most prestigious gates of Kanazawa Castle First up: Ishikawa-mon Gate This is also an Important Cultural Property Since its reconstruction in 1788, it’s been repaired over the ages Giving us the form we see today We’re looking at the same view as people two centuries ago All three gates use a structure called a “masugata-mon” The first gate you pass through is the “first gate” Beyond it appears the “second gate” Together with the square “masugata” space between them The stonework in these two places is different, actually I later learned it ended up this way during Edo-period renovations I even found stones with markings like these This space known as the “masugata” Was designed so that enemies who made it this far Could be attacked from towers on all sides above Brutal… that’d be a nightmare for attackers. 💦 Through the second gate and into the castle we go Next we came to Hashizume-mon Gate As the last gate leading to the Ninomaru Palace It apparently had the strictest controls Hashizume Gate burned down in a fire in 1881 And was reconstructed in the 2000s You can peek into the “guard station” inside the second gate Leaving Hashizume Gate, we head to the last gate The long building you see along the way is the Gojukken Nagaya This was also reconstructed in the 2000s Admission is required, but you can tour the inside There are various exhibits inside Letting you experience the history and techniques of Kanazawa Castle This spot is called the “Hishi Yagura” (Diamond Turret) And the view overlooking the plaza from here is said to be spectacular And here’s the last of the three grand gates: Kahoku-mon Gate The second gate turret of Kahoku-mon is open to the public for free You can study its internal structure with explanatory displays You can see the masugata area and the Hishi Yagura The Hishi Yagura as seen from the Kahoku-mon turret entrance After that, we kept wandering around the grounds Checking out the exhibits and views This time we stuck to the free areas But Kanazawa Castle was still plenty enjoyable You can feel both history and nature And it’s a wonderfully relaxing place to spend time We exit through Otemon Gate and head to Omicho Market I’m hungry—it’s lunchtime I spotted Champion Curry in Omicho Market And popped in Today I went with the Mix Curry for ¥1,080 I grabbed a seat at the end Cup of water at the ready Barely any wait And here it comes. It comes with loin cutlet, fillet cutlet, and sausage— A mix curry that looks as luxurious as it tastes 🍛 The way the sauce is poured, the shredded cabbage—everything looks beautiful ☆彡 Let’s dig in! Applause!! That reliable deliciousness of a pork loin cutlet Curry plus tonkatsu? Flawless combo Rich A thick, rich sauce—the very essence of “Kanazawa curry” Not too spicy, but full of depth You can see why it’s so popular The fillet cutlet and sausage are, of course, delicious too I wanted a hearty portion today And this hit the spot Thanks for the meal After that, we headed to “Shuuraku” in the same market To pick up a stick sushi as a souvenir So many tempting varieties But since the best-by is only until the next day, I can only buy one 🤔 After much deliberation, I chose the “nodoguro” (blackthroat seaperch) for ¥2,970! A short move from Omicho Market I learned this area is also associated with the writer Kyoka Izumi A neat discovery as we crossed the Asanogawa Bridge We revisited Higashi Chaya District from last night As expected, it’s bustling with tourists in the daytime A far cry from last night’s quiet mood Lots of international visitors, naturally You can tell it’s a top sightseeing spot Views you don’t notice at night And scenes you can only feel by day Same place, different face depending on the time of day A second visit still feels fresh That wraps up sightseeing in Kanazawa From here we’ll start heading home with a detour to Toyama To bring this Hokuriku trip to a close Good morning It’s the next day now We’re still in Ishikawa Prefecture On the way to Toyama I felt like taking in some mountain views So we’re heading to Mt. Hodatsu Mt. Hodatsu Parking Lot 〒929-1314 Konyamachi, Hodatsushimizu, Hakui District, Ishikawa We had a clear view all the way to the Sea of Japan (the footage is accidentally double speed—sorry about that) Even Maeda Keiji would call it a superb view Found an observation deck, so let’s check it out (also at accidental double speed—sorry!) The view got even better You can see all this just by driving up Easy access yet fantastic views 👍 Great weather, and the temperature and breeze feel perfect It was a spur-of-the-moment stop But it turned out to be a lovely place that refreshed us for the morning Starting the day with great views feels amazing We’ll cross Mt. Hodatsu and continue down into Toyama Prefecture Time skip to early afternoon Noel Country Table 〒939-1334 富山県砺波市野村島213-2 We found a tasty-looking Western-style eatery And came for a late lunch A giant Totoro welcomed us at the door The log-house look adds to the charm It’s an adorable spot Since we arrived after 2 p.m., we were seated right away At lunchtime the parking lot had been full Definitely a popular place, just as the reviews say The menu looks so good it’s hard to choose I went for their “signature” coarse-ground hamburger steak I asked the staff for a sauce recommendation They suggested “sakura miso sauce” And “wine mayonnaise with basil” So I chose the wine mayonnaise basil flavor I nibbled on the set salad while waiting The veggie-packed soup was great too Before long— It arrived. The white of the mayo pops against the green basil A colorful sauce that really whets the appetite Here we go !? An outrageous amount of juices bursting out!! And that sweet, savory aroma of the meat hits at the same time My eyes and nose are already shouting “delicious!” 🤤 First bite— Whoa—so good!! So tasty it makes you instinctively crave white rice You can see the coarse grind Meaty texture with tons of umami Shimmering juices and meat cooked just right Just looking at this hamburger steak makes you happy The veggies on the side are fresh and tasty The wine mayo basil sauce Pairs perfectly with the coarse-ground patty The light tang of mayo and the basil aroma Bring out the sweetness of the fat It was so good I finished in no time Thanks for the meal! (Coarse-ground hamburger steak: ¥1,130; rice/salad/soup set: ¥360; total: ¥1,490) We asked and snapped a commemorative photo at the end A truly delicious local favorite Absolutely the right call to come here! Roadside Station Inami 〒932-0226 富山県南砺市北川730 Inami is famous for woodcarving With lots of carvings greeting you right at the entrance The restaurant had already closed for the day But it seems they serve massive-portion dishes I doubt I could finish one by myself But sharing with a group would be fun And tucked away in the back was The “Olympic Uncle” Exhibition!! Turns out he was from around here There were various memorabilia on display Over at the roadside station’s shop They had piles of nostalgic candy Superball raffle—so nostalgic! Doraemon, because this is the home region of Fujiko Fujio Plenty of woodcarved souvenirs, too Next to the station are numerous woodcarving studios Their interiors are lined with carved figures We took a moment to enjoy the mechanical signboard Looks walkable to Zuisenji, so let’s go Inami Betsuin Zuisenji 〒932-0211 富山県南砺市井波3050 is a Jodo Shinshu (Higashi Honganji) temple in Inami, Nanto, Toyama. It is a branch temple of the sect, venerating Shinshu Honbyo (Higashi Honganji) as its head temple. Commonly called Inami Betsuin or Zuisenji. Its mountain name is ‘Sankokusan.’ In the Sengoku period it served as a base of the Etchu Ikko-ikki, and the temple complex is encircled by sturdy stone walls. The carvings on its buildings were all crafted by Inami woodcarvers from Nanto, where the woodcarving industry thrives. Source: Wikipedia. And here are those sturdy stone walls The moss-covered stones exude history Up the stone steps we go A splendid main gate comes into view This is the carving mentioned in the notes Dragon in the Waves The dragon’s eyes and sense of motion are incredible Through the gate are magnificent buildings and trees With so many things that speak of history We paid the ¥500 admission at the desk just inside the gate First, we head to the main hall straight ahead To the left of it is the Taishido And further back you can see the Treasure Hall No photography inside 📷 We toured the Taishido and Treasure Hall Admiring the exquisite interiors and exhibits Afterwards, we enjoyed the many carvings and adornments Found throughout the buildings Marveling at the meticulous craftsmanship We stayed almost until closing time Lastly, to the Shikidai Gate outside the main gate We took our time appreciating the fine carvings here as well And then we left Zuisenji Leaving Zuisenji, we walked to Monzen Yoka-machi Street There, too, you can enjoy scenery unique to Inami Finally we stopped by Inami Hachiman-gu Shrine Grateful for yet another wonderful trip And hoping the next journey will be just as fun We offered a heartfelt prayer And that’s a wrap on this Hokuriku trip Thanks again for watching If you have time, please join us again next time
