We stayed 2 nights at Hoshino Resorts KAI Okuhida. Hot springs, nature, and great food. Let me show you this healing trip. We’ve arrived! In May… blooming double cherry blossoms! Our room is in the west wing with a courtyard. Hot spring water flows in the courtyard. The mountain view right in front! We joined the “Onsen Iroha” program. Learned about spring quality and bathing tips. Got the KAI’s special “Onsen Stamp Book.” Afterwards, we walked to a local souvenir shop. They surprised us with hot spring eggs! Slightly salty, super tasty! We bought some beer and went back to the room. Open! Ginger tea and tea set. Fridge has paid drinks (water is free). Welcome sweets were local treats. Miso crackers with granola—so good. Peach jelly was sweet and delicious. Loved the “Hida dye” dragon cushion. The bentwood headboard is beautiful. Found the room wear in the closet! KAI’s own cosmetics. Even makeup remover—so helpful. The furoshiki had toothbrushes and more inside. We booked a special room with an open-air bath and bed. From the bath, stunning Okuhida views! With doors, you can soak with privacy. Next, KAI’s unique activity, “Local Fun.” It’s held in the travel library. We learned Hida’s craft, “bentwood.” Tried making bag handles by bending wood. Using wood soaked in hot water. Felt like it might snap—so tense. But it bent smoothly into a curve. A beautiful arch! Then dried it in the microwave. Tied it with the furoshiki—done! The bag was handy for meals and baths. The footbath felt so relaxing. Quietly watching the courtyard lights… Now, time for dinner! What’s this? A “Yamabiko doll”—a lucky charm. 【Appetizer】 Sesame soup and beef shigure. Cheers! 【Soup】 Cherry blossom mochi with shrimp. Lovely spring colors. 【Assorted Dishes】 Hors d’oeuvres, sashimi, vinegar dish. Perfect portions, all delicious! 【Fried】 Tempura was amazing! 【Grilled】 Miso sukiyaki. It even had Hida’s local dish, “Komo tofu.” Soup poured over grated yam… Then on rice—Tororo miso bowl! 【Dessert】 Mitarashi marshmallow. Sweet soy glaze drizzled on top… With ice cream underneath! We once stayed at KAI Akiu too… Maybe because this was a 2-night stay… They gave us a chocolate welcome plate. Such kind hospitality—thank you! After dinner, time for the public bath. Two indoor baths (warm & hot) plus one open-air bath. No filming inside, but we felt so warm and relaxed. Can’t wait for tomorrow. Good night. Good morning! A morning soak—the best part of travel. From our room, the Northern Alps view. Snow and fresh greenery contrast beautifully. Joined morning exercise in the courtyard. Inspired by local woodworking—like a lumberjack cutting trees. Such a refreshing morning. What should I drink after exercise? Tea and herbal tea available. For now, some water… And a cup of coffee too. Feeling relaxed. Books about Gifu and Hida were there. Time for breakfast. I’m starving! Breakfast looked amazing! So many flavors—totally satisfying. Even the architecture was healing. Now heading to Takayama’s old town. About 45 minutes by car from KAI Okuhida. We parked at Kanshokan Library’s paid lot. A short walk revealed charming scenery. Takayama as a school trip spot sounds nice. Not only the old town—nature is beautiful too. Over 30°C in May… Took a break at ONDO café. Iced latte brought me back to life! After Takayama, we visited Hirayu Otaki waterfall. Hirayu Otaki. A 64m drop—so powerful! We went closer. The spray reached us—so intense. Water from the basin flows into the river with force. One of Japan’s Top 100 Waterfalls. Back at the inn. After sightseeing, refreshed in the hot spring! The bath was small but never crowded. Open-air bath under blue sky felt different from last night. An open-air bath with sky view (photo from brochure). After bathing, two free drinks! Blue roasted tea. Drinking vinegar with honey and apple. They even had ice pops. Cold drinks and ice—so refreshing. Time for a little rest. Then dinner on day two. 【Appetizer】 Grilled sesame tofu with sea urchin. Cheers! 【Simmered】 Grilled eel and burdock roll. 【Assorted】 Hors d’oeuvres, sashimi. Tonight’s sashimi was so good. 【Fried】 Scallop fritter, potato, paprika tempura. 【Hot Pot】 Mouryo nabe. A whole duck leg inside! Add vegetables… Dip sliced duck into the broth. The duck hotpot was delicious. 【Meal】 Soba noodles. The soba matched the broth perfectly. 【Dessert】 Black sesame tiramisu. Day two was perfect! Tomorrow is the last day. Good night. Good morning. Day three at KAI Okuhida. Our last breakfast. Another gorgeous Japanese breakfast! Gifu’s local dish, “Suttate soup.” Soybean paste soup seasoned with miso or soy sauce. Nutritious and beautifully presented. Afterward, relaxed in the open-air bath. Time to say goodbye to this view. Nature, hot springs, and meals healed us. We feel completely refreshed! Before checkout, we stopped by the gift shop. They had many items we saw during our stay. The wooden keychain from our room key. The cups from the room and library café. Made by a Gifu potter. The welcome sweets were so good—I bought miso crackers… And Hida peach jelly as souvenirs. Sadly, it’s time to say goodbye to KAI Okuhida. But since we’re in Gifu… On the way home, we stopped at Shirakawa-go. Crossing the bridge, the World Heritage site appears before us. A quiet, beautiful village surrounded by mountains. Up close, the gassho-style houses are impressive. The thatched roofs are thick and neatly arranged. Snow still remains on the distant Northern Alps. Grateful to the residents who preserve this scenery. It was hot again today—time for matcha ice cream. Carp swam in the clear waterways. Even rainbow trout too! The streams in Shirakawa-go are so pure. It feels like nature is alive here. Old huts using water power still remain. For lunch, we had udon at “Mendokoro Yocha.” Kitsune udon. Meat udon. What would it be like to live here… Next time, I want to stay overnight in Shirakawa-go. Gifu is full of charm—I’d love to return. That’s the end of this trip.
