Japan’s Deadliest Bear Attack Happened Here｜日本史上最悪の熊害事件の現場

Hello everybody. Today I wanted to show you one of the most famous things in Tomayer which happened back in 1915 and it’s the San Betsu bear incident. So we’re going to go check it out today and we’re going to start here at the town hall. As you can see the famous bear in the background here which a lot of people especially bikers like to stop and take a picture as they’re riding up the coastline and around Hokkaido. So very famous spot for stopping off at. We’re going to go check out the nearby museum and have a look at a little uh setup they have there. And then we’re going to shoot out the back of Tomaya to Skeetsu and have a look. So come along, let’s check it out. [Music] [Music] Okay, so here we are now at our local town museum here in Tommayer, which has some really cool historical artifacts, some uh big bears as you’ll see, and a diarama, a setup of what it must have looked like, what happened back in 1915 out at Sanka. bit. So you can imagine how scary it must have been. [Music] Okay, so here we are now at the actual site of the Sanetsu bear incident of 1915 which happened on December 9th through the 14th if I if I remember correctly, and it end up killing uh six or seven people. It went down as Japan’s worst bear attack ever. This is the actual site with this remade hut, replica of the actual hut the people lived in, which the bear actually attacked. You can imagine it must have been super cold and scary. An awesome feeling to be out here and to imagine the terror that this uh village must have endured back in the day. So the bear apparently weighed 340 kilograms. That’s a that’s a big brown fluffy bear indeed. So if you’re coming through Tomaya, this is a place that you might want to come and check it out. It’s a very historical place in Japan’s history. And always be careful when you’re traveling around in the outdoors in Hokkaido. Be sure to carry bear spray. It’s always best to make sure you’ve at least got bear spray. I carry a bear horn as well that it’s very loud. just in case cuz you can never be too careful. There’s been a rise of bear attacks recently. In an upcoming video, we’re going to delve a bit more into that. Going to interview some local hunters and uh some local people and see what their take is on their uh experiences with bear encounters. So, thanks very much for watching. The Sankebetsu Brown Bear Incident | Hokkaido’s Deadliest Bear Attack (1915)

In this video, I take you on a journey into one of Japan’s most infamous wildlife tragedies – the 1915 Sankebetsu bear incident, right here in Tomamae, Hokkaido.

We kick things off at the town hall with a look at the local bear mascot (a far friendlier version of the real story), then head over to the Tomamae Town Museum, where some eerie relics and historical info paint a dark picture of what went down. After that, we hit the road out to the actual site where the attack took place over a century ago.

まずは町役場のクマのマスコットからスタート（本物の事件とはかなり雰囲気が違います…）、そして苫前町郷土資料館へ向かい、当時の貴重な資料や展示を紹介します。その後、車で実際の事件現場へ移動し、現地の様子をお見せしながら、事件の詳細を解説します。
