This is the narrowest part of the Kanmon Strait, called “Hayatomo no Seto.” We have arrived at Mimosuso River Park. Right away, there’s a cannon. (Replica) This is where the Choshu clan once fired at foreign ships. In 1863, at the end of the Edo period, the Choshu clan declared “No passage for foreign ships!” They blockaded the Kanmon Strait and fired at ships from Britain, America, France, and the Netherlands. This marked the start of the Shimonoseki War (also called the Bunkan War). Right next to it, you’ll find the famous “Historical Paper Play Show.” Volunteers are performing it. At this season, they were doing “The Ghost Story of Earless Hoichi.” The program changes depending on the time of year. From 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., as soon as people gather, they perform a 10-minute show for free. By the way, it’s closed on Tuesdays and Thursdays. And right across from here is the entrance to the Kanmon Pedestrian Tunnel on the Shimonoseki side. Let’s walk from Honshu to Kyushu. Pedestrians can cross for free. Bicycles and mopeds, if pushed by hand, can cross for 20 yen. From the ground level, take the elevator about 55 meters underground. Once you descend, you’ll find a straight tunnel stretching 780 meters all the way to Mojiko. Opened in 1958, it’s still a lifeline for tourists, commuters, and students. Right now, we’re 58 meters below sea level. Walking even deeper under the seabed, just above us, there’s actually a roadway. In the middle of the tunnel, you’ll find the prefectural border between Yamaguchi and Fukuoka, written on the floor. It’s a popular photo spot underwater!
(Okay, let’s step into Fukuoka Prefecture.) Arrived at Mojiko side~ As soon as you exit the elevator, you can see the Kanmon Bridge from the Moji side! From here, you can also see Mt. Hinoyama, and the Shimonoseki side where we were just now. Since today’s trip is about Shimonoseki, let’s go right back and walk towards Karato. Okay, back in Shimonoseki. Here’s the Kanmon Bridge seen from this side. The total length is 1,068 meters. When it opened in 1973, it was the longest bridge in the Orient. This is also the stage of one of Japan’s most famous battles: The Battle of Dan-no-ura. In 1185, after decades of conflict, the final decisive battle between the Minamoto and Taira clans was fought here. There are statues of Minamoto no Yoshitsune and Taira no Tomomori. By the way, Tomomori was the son of Taira no Kiyomori, who established Japan’s first samurai government. Next, let’s head to Ganryu Island from Karato by ferry! Round trip is 900 yen. It takes about 10 minutes. Many people also go fishing here, perhaps? In about 10 minutes, we’ll arrive at Ganryu Island. The ferry has both a first and second floor, but I chose to ride on the outdoor deck upstairs. Slowly leaving Karato, then picking up speed— the wind feels great. You can see the Kaikyokan Aquarium, and the Hoshino Resort, and even the Shimonoseki Kaikyo Yume Tower. And right ahead, a familiar company for stock investors— Mitsubishi Heavy Industries! But here in Shimonoseki, it’s not defense, aviation, or nuclear projects, it’s the historic shipyard. Yes, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries also does shipbuilding. After about 10 minutes from Karato, we arrive at Ganryu Island. Everyone knows Miyamoto Musashi, Sasaki Kojiro, and Ganryu Island, but surprisingly, many don’t know it’s actually in Shimonoseki. The island’s name comes from Kojiro’s sword style, “Ganryu,” so the island was named “Ganryu-jima.” The island’s circumference is about 1.6 km, and you can walk around it in 30 to 40 minutes. There’s not much here, but the scenery is amazing. And Ganryu Island is also famous for the 1987 match— Antonio Inoki vs. Masa Saito! Held without a ring, spectators, or commentators— the legendary “Ganryu Island Rules” match lasted an incredible 2 hours and 5 minutes. It’s written here as well. I wonder if there’s still video footage of it. On the way back, the upper deck was full, so I had to sit inside on the first floor. There’s no air conditioning, so in summer, the second-floor deck is recommended! Next, we’ll drive along the coastal scenic road. Route 191, heading north from Shimonoseki, is a photogenic road where the sea, sky, and mountains spread out together. As we approach our destination, be careful not to miss the sign, it’s quite modest. Here we are. This is “Matsunaga-ken & Toyoura Blue Line”! The exterior looks plain, but it’s a long-established eatery known for its fresh and delicious seafood. The menu is also extensive. From whale set meals, to squid sashimi bowls for 1,000 yen! They even serve grilled meat. Lots of set meals to choose from. And plenty of tasty side dishes too. So many choices, it’s hard to decide. They even have udon and soba. Of course, I ordered the star of the menu— the Extra Large Sea Urchin Bowl (2,500 yen)! Here’s the squid sashimi bowl (1,000 yen). And this is the sashimi set meal (1,400 yen). The sea urchin piled so high you can’t even see the rice is so soft it melts when you lift it with chopsticks, and it gives off a rich aroma of the sea. I was completely satisfied. After filling up on sea urchin, we continue north on Route 191. Here it is: Tsunoshima Bridge. We’ll pass it once, then stop at the parking lot to get a proper look. This is Tsunoshima Bridge. It stretches 1,780 meters. Free to cross, with breathtaking scenery. A perfect spot. Take a commemorative photo first, then cross the bridge—that’s the standard routine. Let’s look at it head-on. Now, let’s cross the bridge. On sunny days, the sea below divides into two colors— emerald green and cobalt blue. The view is exhilarating! The bridge is also famous as a filming spot for dramas like “HERO Special” and for car commercials. It’s a well-known location. After landing on Tsunoshima, the first stop is, of course, the beach. There are two beaches here: Tsunoshima Ohama Beach and Shiokaze Cobalt Blue Beach. Both have soft, white sand and crystal-clear water. The waves are calm too. This one is Tsunoshima Ohama Beach. It costs 800 yen per adult for beach maintenance. But the beach is beautifully kept, with lifeguards on duty, so it feels safe. On weekdays, it’s quiet and relaxing. Parking, showers, and changing rooms are all well equipped, making it enjoyable for families, couples, or solo travelers. However, there are no beach huts, so bring a simple tent for comfort. Tent rentals are also available. There’s also Tsunoshima Lighthouse, first lit in 1876, and many other sightseeing spots. Now, let’s head to another highlight— it’s about a 30-minute drive. We’ve arrived at Motonosumi Shrine. 123 red torii gates stretch toward the sea, a sight selected as one of Japan’s top 100 views. A white fox greets us at the entrance. Looking out over the Sea of Japan, you step into a tunnel of red gates. The path descending to the sea feels like a journey to another world. Walking along while gazing at the Sea of Japan, you climb the sacred path, and suddenly, a spectacular view of the Japan Sea opens up before you. There are steep cliffs here. Waves crash against the rocks— you can feel the power of nature. There are no guardrails, so it’s quite thrilling. Of course, you don’t need to climb the cliffs. The slopes are steep, so wear good shoes. The breeze was comfortable this day— really refreshing. You can fully enjoy the beauty of the Japan Sea here. This shrine also has another specialty. You throw coins toward a box 6 meters high on a torii gate. If it goes in, your wish will come true! This unique custom is very popular with tourists. After enjoying Motonosumi Shrine, we head to the next spot: Kawatana Onsen. Before eating kawara soba, let’s take a quick dip. This is Peaceful Seiryu-sen, a public day-use bath. It’s a natural hot spring with pure flow, no circulation. The water is crystal clear. They even have rental sets, so you can come empty-handed. Finally, the highlight of Kawatana Onsen: the famous restaurant “Takase.” Of course, the order is kawara soba, but “unameshi” (eel rice) is also popular. On a hot roof tile, cha-soba noodles are served with egg, beef, and seaweed, topped with lemon and grated radish with chili. Not only does it look amazing, it’s also delicious and reasonably priced! This trip was a bit rushed. But as a shareholder, I introduced Shimonoseki, home of Yamaguchi FG’s headquarters. Here’s a screenshot proving I actually bought their stock. The narration may be a little clumsy, but I recorded it while relaxing, and even drinking. If you enjoyed this video, please like, and subscribe to the channel. Thank you so much!
