これは涼しすぎる…下鴨神社「御手洗祭」足浸し神事【2025】

Hello everyone. Yugo of Za Kyoto here. Today is Monday, July 21st, and I’m at Shimogamo Shrine. At this time of year in July, what comes to mind when you think of Shimogamo Shrine, everyone? That’s right. The Mitarashi Festival is currently being held at Shimogamo Shrine. They write “Mitarashi” like this here… it’s written “Mitarashi,” meaning “hand washing.” So, what kind of festival is the Mitarashi Festival? Well… It’s also known as the “Foot-Soaking Ritual,” and around the Saturday before the day of the Ox in July, the shrine grounds’ spring water is used for people to soak their feet in, and they offer lanterns…basically light candles…offer lanterns and pray for good health and longevity. That’s what this festival is all about. I think this is also the same spring water… it’s written here somewhere. This spring water from the Tadasu no Mori forest, pure, purified water… seems to have been gushing ever since Shimogamo Shrine was built, and soaking your feet in this water, purifying your feet and praying for good health and longevity is the Shimogamo Shrine Mitarashi Festival. However, it’s not just the foot-soaking ritual; there are also stalls set up like this, so it’s a festival that’s enjoyable even if you bring your children. So, everyone, for now, please watch the foot-soaking ritual. So, I’m going to participate in the Mitarashi Festival. The participation fee is 500 yen for adults. You pay 500 yen here, one adult. Next, you get a bag. And you put your shoes and socks into this bag… and go up. It’s reassuring even for first-timers. The procedure is written here. If you’re a first-timer and don’t know what to do, I think it’s a good idea to read this. So, I’ve put my shoes in, and next, I’ll get a candle for the lantern offering. And after getting the candle, let’s go, Let’s go! Well, you know, you might hear the voices of the people in front of me, but it’s incredibly cold. Really. It’s incredibly cold. Cold. Too cold. So cold. Yeah. The water gushing out from a place like this. Is it tap water, or spring water? There are some fallen candles, so with this I’ll light it, and then I’ll put this candle up. So, let’s do it. Hot! Hot! Got it, got it, got it, got it, got it, got it, got it, got it, got it. Oh, I did it! This is it. I did it. There are quite a few places to put the candles. Eight places. No, there are more. There are more in the back. This candle is burning fiercely. The flame is huge. It’s almost gone out. It’s crowded. It’s almost 8 o’clock now, right around 8 o’clock. It’s supposed to be until 8 o’clock, but it’s incredibly crowded. Cold, Ah, warm, the stone is warm. It seems that the outside temperature was 41 degrees Celsius today, so it felt really good. So, I’ll put on my shoes. I should have brought a towel. I didn’t bring a towel, so my feet are soaking wet. I put on soaking wet socks. Clear bottle is 500 yen Got a cup, at this offering place. I hear the sound of drums. I was just thirsty. The water is so delicious. Oh, Mi Water fortune. Shimogamo Shrine’s water fortune is famous, isn’t it? When you wet the fortune slip in the water, a great fortune or a small fortune appears… That’s Shimogamo Shrine’s water fortune. Usually,… we use the water here… to do the water fortune, but today… everyone is putting their feet in it, so… we won’t be doing the water fortune here. We’re doing it in this nearby river, a small stream,… everyone is. Mitarashi Festival Special Prayer. From the 18th to the 27th. Oh, I see. They seem to be offering prayers over there. Wow, I feel a lot of power from this thing. This is so nice. The atmosphere is amazing. It’s said to be eye drops wood… eye drops, gunpowder. It’s eye drops, the eye drops tree. This is nice, the moss is beautiful. Shimogamo Shrine has a lot of nature, it’s nice, isn’t it? The Tadasu no Mori and so on. So. Mitarashi Festival, how did you all like it? Because it’s held in the middle of summer,… this cold water was incredibly refreshing. It was really refreshing.
