This video captures a serene visit to Kokeizan Eiho-ji Temple, located in Tajimi, Gifu Prefecture, filmed in July 2025.

Established in 1313 by Zen master Musō Soseki of the Nanzen-ji lineage, the temple sits atop Kokeizan (“Tiger Ravine Mountain”), a name inspired by its resemblance to Mount Lüshan in China.

Two of its architectural structures—the Kaisan-dō (Founders’ Hall) and Kannon-dō—are designated National Treasures of Japan, housing ancestral tablets from the Nanboku-chō to early Muromachi periods, as well as wooden statues of Musō Soseki and his disciples.

The temple’s garden, featuring the iconic Garyū-ike (Reclining Dragon Pond), the arched Musai Bridge, a waterfall, and Bon’ongan rock, is designated as a National Place of Scenic Beauty, and reflects garden design mastery from the Zen tradition.

A 700-year-old gingko tree stands near the main hall as a Municipal Natural Monument, offering a vibrant display each autumn that rivals the temple’s fiery maple colors.

The temple remains an active Rinzai Zen site, offering sutra-copying and zazen meditation sessions, set among art, architecture, and nature.

虎渓山という名称は、中国の廬山虎渓に似た風景であることから名付けられ、鎌倉時代の禅僧 夢窓疎石によって1313年に創建されました。

開山堂と観音堂の2棟は国宝に指定されており、室町期から伝わる僧侶や檀那の位牌が安置され、夢窓や元翁本元の木像も祀られています。

境内には池泉回遊式庭園が広がり、その中心には「臥龍池」と反り橋の「無際橋」、滝を抱える「梵音巌」が配置され、名園として国の名勝に登録されています。

樹齢約700年とされるイチョウの巨木は市の天然記念物であり、秋には鮮やかな黄葉が真紅のカエデと相まって印象的な光景を生み出します。

現在も禅宗寺院として写経会や坐禅会を開催しており、その佇まいは建造美・庭園美・禅の精神が一体となった場所として、多くの人々の心を静かに満たしています。
